Giants lose to the Redskins 20-7, drop to last place in the NFC East.
Kerry Collins completed only 5 of 14 passes for 62 yards and one interception.
Jesse Palmer completed 7 of 11 passes for 83 yards.
Tiki Barber had 16 carries for 99 yards.
Tiki Barber had 3 catches for 47 yards.
Tim Carter had 3 catches for 42 yards.
Dorsey Levens scored the Giants only touchdown on a 5-yard run into the endzone.
Michael Strahan had 2 sacks.
Game Notes:
"If there's snow, Gamegirl won't go, so this report's not coming to you from one of those cold semi-snow filled stadium seats.
I felt pretty cozy with my decision to watch at home, especially when Tiki Barber fumbled on the Giants second play of the game, to give the Redskins the ball on the Giants 27 yard line. Of
course, it would have been great to see Michael Strahan's impressive 13th sack of the year first hand. He turned a Washington 3rd down and 1 at the goaline into a 4th down and 10, and the
Redskins had to take the 28 yard fieldgoal.
So what do you do if you're the head coach? Do you bench Tiki Barber because he fumbled again? Well, that would be wrong, because on his next three runs, Tiki
goes out there and takes the ball 19 yards, 18 yards, and 15 yards.
Of course this is not the year of the Giants, and that drive ended up with a 26 yard missed field goal attempt by Matt Bryant, and they were still behind. The Redskins went three and out,
and because of a poor punt into the wind, the Giants got the ball back at the Redskins 35 yard line. A few plays later, Dorsey Levens took it in for the touchdown and Bryant's extra point
gave the Giants their lead 7-3.
Then came one of the funniest plays I've seen. On the kickoff return, to save a touchdown, Matt Bryant had to take off after the Redskins returner who looked
to be about twice his size and speed. Bryant either scared or distracted Patrick Johnson, I can't figure out which, as Johnson stepped out of bounds at the Giants 34 yard line while knocking
Bryant to the ground with one hand.
Aside from seeing Strahan make another sack, feeling the pain of seeing Kerry Collins being carted off the field, and I guess maybe making one of those nifty snowmen
on an empty seat next to me like I saw on TV, I missed out on seeing Bruce Smith break the all time sack record. Of course, even a lot of the fans who went to the game missed that. By the time
it happened in the 4th quarter with the Redskins up 20-7, not many people were left there to see it."
Game Notes:
"The Giants offense had the ball for only about 23 minutes compared to the Redskins 37. It's hard to keep drives going when you turn the ball
over and give up 6 sacks. It also doesn't help in scoring points when you miss an easy field goal and commit stupid penalties.
I mean really stupid penalties like when Johnny Harris kicked the official's flag when he 'thought' the penalty was going to be a pass interference call against his buddy Frank Walker. Instead
of killing the Redskins drive, the unsportsman like conduct penalty sustained it, and gave Washington a first down.
The Giants had 7 penalties for 70 yards. They lost Kerry Collins with an ankle sprain when Bruce Smith and LaVar Arrington ran into him on a play that should
have been stopped because the offense committed a penalty. That gave backup quarterback Jesse Palmer a chance to play. Palmer was sacked five times, and one of those gave Bruce Smith the all
time sack leader record he's been chasing for so long (19 years).
In the 4th quarter, because the Giants were so far behind, they had Palmer go for a 4th down and 10 at the Washington 28 yard line, and he completed it to
Amani Toomer for 16 yards. That was the first time the Giants made a 4th down play this season after having failed ten times before that.
Jesse Palmer could end starting for the Giants in the next game against New Orleans. He has to learn whatever Kerry Collins figured out about avoiding sacks with
this inexperienced front line protecting him. If Palmer goes on to be a star quarterback, he gets to laugh off the fact that Bruce Smith broke the record against him. If he doesn't, his career
in NFL history will be as a trivia footnote to one of Bruce Smith's lifetime accomplishments."
