Game
Notes:
"I had a good feeling about this game. Maybe because of the
way the Vikings were playing the Giants. I mean, it was a shocker
that they went for that 51 yard career long field goal when their
opening drive was stopped. They showed no respect for the Giants
offense, not caring about giving them good field position if the
field goal missed.
Even more surprising was when they went for the 54 yard field goal after the Giants had sliced through their defense twice in a row. They missed and the Giants got the ball on their own 44
yard line. People complain about Jim Fassel's decisions, but how about Mike Tice's? I guess with his team sitting at 6-0, he figures he's playing with 'house money', but I know how that always
works out for me.
Anyway, after a few more doses of Giants offense, Tice passed up a shorter 49 yard field goal attempt. Maybe watching Ike Hilliard make all those catches, and seeing Tiki Barber bob and weave
and catch for over a hundred yards can have that effect. It also helps when you have Shockey do some of his trademark style catch and runs on your defense. I think the Giants gained some respect
today and showed that maybe they're not some crummy 2-4 team. Maybe they are really an underachieving 3-4 team about to explode."
Game Notes:
"In the first half, Randy Moss made 5 catches for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns. He would have had one more for an additional 64 yards, but Will
Allen closed on Moss and broke up the completion. Then somehow in the second half they held Moss to just 2 catches for 4 yards. What changed?
The Giants surprised the Vikings with a flea-flicker on the opening play of the second half. That turned into a 51 yard gain for Amani Toomer and Conway finished the drive with a field goal
to put the score at 16-10.
Fassel did some good play calling in this game, but you still have to wonder. He almost always has Tiki Barber running the ball on first down plays. The Vikings caught on and were shutting
it down so bad that Tiki even had a four yard loss on one of those plays. Fassel put Levens in at that point, and ran him the same way for the same results. I hope he doesn't use this as an
example of why he neglected using Levens for so long.
Later on, things looked bad for the Giants when the Vikings blocked a punt close to the goal line. Backup linebacker Wes Mallard failed to block Jack Brewer who got to the ball, but Mallard
turned something bad into something good when he scooped up the ball and ran it for a first down. The Giants got to keep the ball at their own 25. That was a nice gift to give your head coach,
and rookie cornerback Frank Walker gave Fassel another when he made a nice interception that led to Ike Hilliard's second touchdown catch of the game. That put the score at 29-17 with not
much time left in the game, and that was it. Now it's on to the Jets next week."
