Giants lose to the Patriots 17-6.
Kerry Collins was 35-of-39 for 314 yards but he had 4 Ints.
Jeremy Shockey had 8 catches for 80 yards.
Tiki Barber had 22 carries for 71 yards, and he caught 4 passes for 48 yards.
Michael Strahan had 2 sacks.
Ike Hilliard had 5 catches for 58 yards.
Marcellus Rivers had 4 catches for 49 yards.
Amani Toomer had 4 catches for 40 yards.
Game Notes:
"Well, it's another week, and another time you're asking yourself, 'How did the Giants lose this game?' There was lots of offensive action. Collins was completing passes, Tiki was running
and catching. Shockey was catching a bunch. Strahan came away with a season high 2 sacks. What happened?
The Patriots with 6 penalties, only 1 first down and a total of just 29 yards of total offense for the whole first half, were practically giving the Giants the game, but somehow they were
winning 7-3. The Giants had much better stats, and even had a time of possession of 21 minutes to the Patriots 9, but not much to show for it. The Pats improved their stats and score over
the second half, and for the second week in a row, the Giants ruled on almost all the stats but one, the turnover ratio, and it cost them the game."
Game Notes:
"The Giants picked up where they left off last week. Kerry's first pass of the game was batted up by Richard Seymour,
intercepted by Tyrone Poole, and the Pats had it on the Giants 28 yard line. Luckily, they got nowhere and missed a 42 yard field goal attempt, which gave the ball back to the Giants on their
own 24 yard line.
Collins got off one successful pass to Toomer for a first down. Then after losing three yards on the next play, Tiki fumbled and it was recovered by Matt Chatham and returned for a 38 yard
touchdown, and a 7-0 lead. I should mention that the weather was pretty bad, lots of rain and poor footing.
On the next series, a 6 yard catch by Shockey and a real good 27 yard catch by Marcellus Rivers got the Giants going and they looked like the real thing until they got down to the New England
3, lost a yard, and settled for a 22 yard field goal by Brett Conway, who was signed just last week because Matt Bryant is out.
As you read above, the Giants defense beat up on the Patriots the whole first half, and the offense moved the ball around to the tune of 134 yards passing and 65 rushing, but came up with
only one missed field goal so the score remained 7-3."
"Thanks to a Bill Belichick halftime meeting, the Patriots came out and took it to the Giants with a 3rd quarter opening drive
that ended only when a ref failed to duck and a Tom Brady pass bounced off him at the Giants ten yard line. The Patriots had to settle for a 28 yard Adam Vinatieri field goal and a 10-3 score.
On the Patriots next drive, Tom Brady completed a long sideline pass to David Patten for 39 yards, and the ever clever Bill Belichick quickly called the next play before Jim Fassel could get
the refs to give him a challange so the play stood. The drive ended in a touchdown and the Patriots were up 17-3.
The Giants managed a 34 yard field goal after that early in the fourth quarter to bring it to 17-6, and that was the end of the scoring."
"I hope Fassel has learned his lesson in one respect. His attitude toward kickers and the kicking team has always been lousy. In total
disregard of Matt Bryant and the excellent job he did in his rookie year while Fassel toyed with his holders and snappers, Fassel said that his decision to keep Mike Hollis or Matt Bryant for
the season could come down to 'a flip of a coin'. Hollis was hurt so Bryant got the nod.
Fassel acts like these players are a dime a dozen, and it always comes back to kick him (pun intended) in the pants. In the fourth quarter, with the Giants at the New England 26 with 8 minutes
or so left, Fassel decided not to go for a 44 yard field goal with Brett Conway. A field goal would have brought the score to 17-9. Instead, Kerry Collins threw a fourth down pass that was intercepted
by Rodney Harrison.
The Giants missed on two field goals today and could certainly have used someone like a Matt Bryant or Morten Andersen out there today."
