Giants can't handle the swarming Bears and lose 28-21.
They forced 5 turnovers and sacked Kurt Warner 7 times.
Kurt Warner was 18 of 36 for 195 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.
Tiki Barber rushed 21 times for 72 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Jeremy Shockey caught 6 passes for 64 yards and 1 touchdown.
Ike Hilliard caught 6 passes for 38 yards.
Game Notes:
"What can I say? The Giants special teams group started strong, forcing Chicago to line up on their own 11 yard line after the kickoff and coverage. Then the Giants defense held Chicago
to 3 and out. The offense came on with great field position, but actually lost yardage on 3 plays with two incomplete passes
and one rushing attempt that lost yardage. Those first 3 minutes told you all you needed to know for the rest of the game.
I mean the Giants kicked off and once again the special teams group did an outstanding job. David Tyree did some amazing gymnastics
in the air to have the ball downed by Jim Maxwell at Chicago's 6 yard line. The Giants defense got the Bears 3 and out again, and after the kick, the offense had the ball at the Bears 38 yard
line.
From this close distance they did their part. Tiki Barber finished off the drive with a rush up the middle for a 3 yard touchdown and
the Giants had a 7-0 lead. On the next offensive series Tiki rushed for a touchdown again, and so the Giants were up 14-0 at the end of the quarter. The ball changed hands a few times with
lots of penalties being called for most of the quarter, and then somehow before you could say 'Bring on the Eagles', the Giants were down 20-14 at the half, and they never recovered.
They managed to make it close near the end, scoring with a touchdown pass to Jeremy Shockey. Then with the score 28-21, they recovered
the onside kick, but that was just a tease. They were four and out and so were all the fans by that point including me, wondering what the heck happened."
Game Notes:
"It looks like the Curse of Inside The NFL struck again. Bob
Costas, Dan Marino, Cris Collinsworth and Cris Carter all picked the Giants to win and of course they lost the game. It would
be easy to blame Kurt Warner for a few mistakes here and there, but mostly the offensive line was at fault. Kurt barely had time to get the snap, and the Bears were all over him to the tune
of 7 sacks, 15 hits, and 15 hurries.
It wasn't good from the start and didn't get better when Luke Petitgout had to leave with a concussion. Giants starting center Shaun O'Hara was also absent from this game because of a leg
infection. The Bears brought a physical game and even Strahan ended up on the sidelines. Quite a few players on both sides required some extra care. Both teams played hard and the Bears exposed
the Giants big weakness which continues to be the offensive line."
