31 There
was thunder and lightning. There was earth wind and fire. Now maybe winter,
spring, summer and fall of Giants running backs, each providing a vastly different
feel and look? After last week's performance, Orleans Darkwa will be part of the
Giants running back mix Sunday in New Orleans against the Saints. How could he
not be? Darkwa provided energy to a lifeless offense. He scored the Giants' only
touchdown.
Though
the Giants haven't revealed how they will utilize their crowded four-man running
back rotation against the Saints on Sunday, second-year back Orleans Darkwa is
likely to be given another opportunity to carve out a consistent role after rushing
for 48 yards and a touchdown in last weekend's win over the Cowboys.
The
most successful rushing game of the season for the Giants was last week, when
they had the four different players. Offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo said he
can foresee using all of them. "Can you have enough snaps for four? Maybe not,"
Tom Coughlin said. "But on a game-to-game basis, you can, you certainly can.
Jason
Pierre-Paul stood in front of his locker speaking to a large group of reporters,
his mangled right hand clearly visible, and vowed to be the same player he's always
been.
Pierre-Paul
declined to be specific about his accident, although he said he had set off
fireworks on the holiday for the past six or seven years for children around his
South Florida neighborhood.
Pierre-Paul,
who made no attempt to hide his injured hand during a locker-room interview,
resisted questions about the pain of a rehabilitation process that included multiple
surgeries and skin grafts. But at times, he offered glimpses into the life-altering
event.
Oct 30
The
one-year deal he struck this week with the Giants is worth a maximum of $8.7
million, which is what the franchise tender was reduced to once he missed the
first seven games of the season. It is highly unlikely, though, Pierre-Paul sees
the full $8.7 million.
Jason
Pierre-Paul once was staring at a $14.813 million pay day. The restructured,
one-year contract, which Pierre-Paul signed on Tuesday, calls for the 26-year-old
defense end to be guaranteed only $1.5 million this season.
On
Sunday, Orleans Darkwa is going to a place he has been plenty of times: The
Superdome, to take on the New Orleans Saints. The Nashville, Tenn., native played
his college ball at Tulane University in New Orleans, and the dome hosts some
Green Wave home games.
The
most successful rushing game of the season for the Giants was last week, when
they had the four different players. Offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo said he
can foresee using all of them. Everyone is waiting. Darkwa said he didn't even
know he'd be getting carries until they shoved him into the game last week, so
all of the backs need to be ready.
Oct
29 After
seven games and an 0-2 start, the Giants are in first place in the division,
having won four of their past five games - though it doesn't seem as if they are
hot or have hit their stride in any way, shape or form. They do not have a quarterback
who is lighting anything up, but they do have, by far, the best quarterback in
the NFC East.
Jason
Pierre-Paul was on the field with his teammates for the first time Wednesday
morning, a day after signing a one-year, incentive-heavy contract that officially
reunited him with the Giants.
When
coach Tom Coughlin announced his arrival in a team meeting this morning, the
players stood and cheered for their friend and teammate.
Jason
Pierre-Paul went through stretching with his teammates and then was off to
the side running drills as the Giants practiced. Many of the players glanced over
to check up on him.
Two
weeks ago, the New Orleans Saints were left for dead after being steamrolled
by the Eagles in Philadelphia and falling to 1-4 on the year. But they have turned
things around since then, winning two straight over the then-unbeaten Atlanta
Falcons and the AFC South-leading Indianapolis Colts to pull within a game of
.500 heading into Sunday's home game against the Giants.
Oct
28 Jason
Pierre-Paul may not quite be the player that he used to be, but the Giants
are willing to take the gamble that he can still help their sagging pass rush
just in time for the stretch run.
Which
Sunday Pierre-Paul returns is the tricky part. He will need time to get back
into football shape. He has to learn a new defense.
The
Giants have been granted a two-game roster exemption for Pierre-Paul, which
means the earliest he could be expected to play is Nov. 15 against the New England
Patriots.
Pressuring
and sacking quarterbacks is Pierre-Paul's specialty. In his first five seasons,
he had 42.0 sacks, placing him eighth on the Giants' career list.
The
Giants have a winning record, are alone in first place and seem poised to
be contenders for the rest of the season. This just isn't the way it was expected
to happen.
Oct 27
Winning
doesn't cover up all these warts. For better (sometimes) or worse (often),
these Giants are what they are. Going against a pass rush more myth than legend,
Drew Brees might carve them up Sunday inside the Superdome. But maybe Eli gets
the Odell Show cranked up in the hometown they share.
The
Giants could know as soon as Tuesday afternoon whether they can count on defensive
end Jason Pierre-Paul returning sometime this season. The Giants and Pierre-Paul
have until Nov. 17 to reach a contract agreement. If they can't work out a deal
by then, he will be disqualified from playing for the rest of the season.
What
this is about now is two things: Saving face for the Giants - getting something
out of nothing to justify the $15 million in cap space they held for JPP this
season. And for JPP, who blew that $14.813 million payday with one act of stupidity,
it's about grabbing as much cash as he still can with his damaged hand.
So
much for the Giants' dominating run defense. For the first five weeks of the
season, the Giants held five straight opponents to less than 100 yards on the
ground, despite a rash of injuries. But on Monday, it was once again a point of
concern as they surrendered 233 rushing yards to the Cowboys.

(3-3) vs Cowboys (2-3) Preview
The
Cowboys took a 30-6 loss from the New England Patriots in the last game they played.
The only good news was that there was a bye coming up as they continue to struggle
without Tony Romo.
The Giants started off strong with an opening drive touchdown
in Philadelphia last week. Unfortunately they failed to come up with any more
points for the rest of the game and lost 27-7 to the Eagles.
Giants
- Eagles Wrap-Up
Oct
25 There
were many reasons for the Giants' meltdown in Philadelphia, but even Tom Coughlin
said it "wasn't our best effort" up front. Three sacks, two intentional
grounding penalties, plenty of pressure on Eli Manning, and absolutely no push
in the run game. And just like that, the Giants' offensive line was back in the
unwanted spotlight again.
And
then there is their recent history, which is eerily close to repeating itself.
A year ago they were 3-2 (check), lost to Philadelphia (check), faced Dallas the
following week (check) and tanked the next six straight games to drop into the
abyss of irrelevance. None of that has been palatable for Coughlin and the Giants
to spend the week chewing on.
If
a football team is to be successful, it has to have two very important traits:
A consistent identity that is evident from game to game, and the ability to overcome
adversity during the course of four quarters. The Giants failed in both regards
in losing to the Eagles on Monday night at Lincoln Financial Field.
Former
Giants
Steve
Weatherford signs with Jets for Patriots game as Ryan Quigley added to injury
report. Weatherford was cut by the Giants in early September when the team traded
for punter Brad Wing from the Steelers.
Oct
24 The
Giants hope their struggling pass rush will get a shot in the arm against
the Dallas Cowboys with both defensive end Robert Ayers Jr. and linebacker Devon
Kennard set to return from hamstring injuries.
The
stark difference between Odell Beckham Jr.'s first- and second-half targets
Monday was fundamentally related to the overall ineptitude of the Giants' offense
as the game progressed, McAdoo said.
Things
have undoubtedly been trending up for Will Tye the past few weeks. The tight
end and Middletown, Conn., native was among the initial roster cuts the Giants
made during training camp. But Tye was quickly added to the team's practice squad
once he cleared waivers. Tye's first career start came this past Monday.
Unsure
if he would see the field with the Giants, Tye was moved to the active roster
for the Oct. 4 game against the Bills after the Giants lost tight end Daniel Fells
for the season due to a MRSA infection. The first-ever NFL player from Stony Brook,
Tye stood out the next two games.
Andre
Williams, 23, has produced a paltry 2.8 yards per carry on 45 attempts. That's
third worst among qualifying NFL running backs. They are the only three running
backs under 3.0 yards per carry. Through six weeks, the sample size is substantial
enough that it has to make you wonder: Is there more to it than the situations
Williams gets his carries and the amount he plays?
Oct
23 The
more the Giants pass to Odell Beckham, the better. As the Giants desperately
tried to climb back into their game on Monday night, they tried everything they
could think of doing to get their offense going. Everything, it seemed, but the
obvious.
They
still have to figure out how to get him the ball when defenses are denying
it, though. It's a conundrum that may not have a direct answer. That was clear
Monday night when Beckham was targeted only once in the second half of a lopsided
loss to the Eagles.
The
Giants' current opinion regarding Odell Beckham Jr. is that less time on the
practice field will give him more of an opportunity to help the team on game day.
That is instinctively counterintuitive to Tom Coughlin, who zealously believes
in the virtues of preparation. But Coughlin has learned in his long coaching career
that allowances must be made for injured players who might not be prepared to
work on Thursday, but will be ready to play on Sunday.
Former
Giants
Carl
Banks frustrated by Damontre Moore's poor judgment. He's the team's most gifted
pass rusher in the absence of Jason Pierre-Paul, but his penchant for making these
what-in-the-world-are-you-thinking mistakes prevents him from taking advantage
of his potential. Banks sits in the radio booth and often shakes his head because
of what he's seeing.
Oct
22 If
Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning are truly elite, they'll fix the Giants mess.
A team with Tom Coughlin at the helm and Eli Manning at quarterback has no excuses
not to bounce back after an ugly loss against a beatable opponent.
As
talented as Odell Beckham Jr. is, the Giants aren't going to force-feed their
star wide receiver the football. That was the word from Eli Manning in the wake
of continuing questions and concern about a second-half disappearing act in Monday
night's 27-7 loss to the Eagles that for the most part wasn't Beckham's fault.
One
of the highlights from the Giants' loss to the Eagles didn't take place on
the field on Monday night. It happened on the sideline when, after Rashad Jennings'
second-quarter fumble in the middle of the unraveling of the team, rookie offensive
tackle Ereck Flowers was shown on the broadcast delivering a fiery address to
his teammates.
The
deadline for Jason Pierre-Paul to sign his franchise tag is Nov. 17, less
than a month away; if he and the Giants haven't come to terms on things, he would
have to sit out all of 2015. He still can't simply sign the tag, though; if the
Giants don't believe he's ready to play, they can still place him on the non-football
injury list and not pay him, ending his season.
Dallas
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett bringing team to Ground Zero before game vs. Giants.
Garrett, a Princeton grad, was playing for the Giants on 9/11. "It was a significant
tragedy in our country's history, and I feel like they captured it so well," Garrett
said.
The
Cowboys will spend Friday night in New York City, having dinner at One World
Observatory in the World Trade Center, part of a visit to Ground Zero. It's a
drastic departure from the norm for a Cowboys team that's dropped three straight,
but Garrett believes it will be worthwhile.
Oct
21 The
Giants won't send Damontre Moore packing Tuesday, but a case can be made that
banishment is warranted based on his self-admitted "poor football IQ"
decision on a roughing-the-passer penalty on Sam Bradford in the first quarter.
It's
not the first time Moore has committed an incomprehensible penalty. But it
may be the last. Tom Coughlin was asked on Tuesday if he can trust Moore to be
on the field and not make costly mistakes. "I can't really honestly say that,"
Coughlin said.
Moore
leads the Giants with three sacks and with Jason Pierre-Paul in limbo and
Robert Ayers injured, he's been their closest thing to a reliable pass-rushing
weapon. Not that he's guaranteed to see the field any longer, Coughlin said.
Victor
Cruz might be ready to make another run at "The Return" very soon. There is
guarded optimism from the Giants regarding Cruz's progress, according to a source.
The receiver has no pain in his left calf and is scheduled to undergo an MRI on
Wednesday. If all goes well, Cruz could gain clearance to begin running again
and then practice, perhaps as early as this week.
Daniel
Fells, the Giants tight end who had been diagnosed with MRSA earlier this
month, was released from Hackensack University Medical Center on Tuesday. He will
need further treatments and will have an in-home nurse available to administer
his medications, but doctors clearly believe he is well enough to be sent home.

when the Giants started off with an opening drive touchdown, but then, well you
know what happened. The way this game started it looked like it was going to be

The game was tied 10-10 in the third quarter, but the Eagles capitalized on the
Saints mistakes to nail down their win.
Later that night the Giants fought
off the San Francisco 49ers. They needed a last minute touchdown to close out
the game with a win, and Eli Manning delivered one to Larry Donnell with 21 seconds
left.
Giants
- 49ers Wrap-Up
Oct
19 There
is still a long way to go, but chances are when the teams of the NFC East
look back on the season and try to figure out where the division title was won,
this Week 6 game between the Giants and the Eagles will be one of those that mattered.
Odell
Beckham Jr. makes trip to Philadelphia ahead of Monday Night Football vs.
Eagles. That is a positive sign for Beckham's chances to play on Monday as he
deals with a hamstring injury.
Faced
with a dearth of depth at cornerback, the Giants have promoted Brandon McGee
from the practice squad and waived tight end Jerome Cunningham.
Jason
Pierre-Paul will return this week to try to convince the team he can play
after the fireworks accident that caused permanent damage to his hand. The meeting
will take place Tuesday.
This
will be the last chance for the Giants to visit with Pierre-Paul, according
to league rules that limit in-person meetings with free agents to two. They can
sign him at a later date but not evaluate his medical condition.
Oct
18 With
the Giants' star receivers either out or slowed by hamstring problems, the
unheralded trio of Dwayne Harris, Geremy Davis and Myles White has gotten the
spotlight in practice this week. Davis is a rookie sixth-round pick and the three
have just 55 career receptions among them, so they're not likely to strike fear
in the heart of the Eagles if they have to play a lot of snaps in Monday night's
NFC East showdown in Philadelphia.
Justin
Pugh has no interest in reminiscing about last year's trip to Philadelphia.
That's the one in which he played right tackle, allowed four sacks, admitted afterward
to it being the worst game he had ever played at any level, and even apologized
to fans on social media for his performance.
Oct
17 Linebacker
Jon Beason sounded off in the Giants locker room Friday afternoon about the
play in which he suffered a concussion last weekend against the 49ers.
Beason
was knocked out early from last Sunday's 30-27 win over San Francisco by a
concussion the veteran middle linebacker put squarely on Niners guard Alex Boone
for illegally pushing his head into the helmet of running back Carlos Hyde.
The
play was submitted to the NFL by the Giants. Boone was not fined but Hyde
was hit with a $23,152 penalty for initiating contact with the crown of his helmet.
Beason said he did not attempt to reach out to Boone personally, instead going
through the media.
Odell
Beckham Jr. missed a second straight practice Friday with a hamstring injury,
leaving him one last team workout Sunday to prove his availability to Tom Coughlin
before Monday night's game against the Eagles.
Eli
Manning took his first regular-season snap in garbage time in Philadelphia
in 2004. "I remember my first play, I handed it off to Tiki Barber, he went
about 75 [yards] for a touchdown. ... I said, 'This is easy,'?" Manning recalled,
and smiled. "And then I took the biggest hit of my life [from Jerome McDougle]
on the last play. It was my welcome-to-the-NFL hit, for sure."
Former
Giants
Amani
Toomer doesn't think any of Eagles' Chip Kelly's moves have panned out. Toomer
says that despite going 20-12 in his first two seasons, it might soon be time
for Kelly to put up or shut up, in Philadelphia.
Oct
16 As
the injuries continue to mount - cornerback Prince Amukamara is the latest
to fall - Giants coach Tom Coughlin can only look on and shake his head. Amukamara
suffered a partially torn pectoral muscle in last Sunday night's 30-27 victory
over the 49ers, though he was able to finish the game. Coughlin said Amukamara
will be out 2-4 weeks.
Giants
count on new and improved Jayron Hosley to replace injured Prince Amukamara.
Jayron Hosley already has stepped into the starting lineup this season. When Dominique
Rodgers-Cromartie missed the Washington game, he played in his place, and when
DRC and Prince Amukamara have had to come to the sideline during games, Hosley
has jumped in.
As
long as Eli Manning is healthy, Giants have chance. He might not have his
top two receivers, Odell Beckham Jr. and Rueben Randle, who have hamstring problems,
but the Giants still will have a fighting chance as long as Eli is in the lineup.
Oct
15 Special
Report - One way to look at things: three straight wins and just a few plays
away from being undefeated. Another way to look at things: The offense is keeping
the Giants in games, but the defense is a potential disaster. Still, the Giants
avoided the trap on Sunday night and beat the San Francisco 49ers in a thrilling
manner that both exposed the defensive problems while highlighting the firepower
of quarterback Eli Manning and his offense.
The
Giants could be forced to go into the Eagles game as they went into their
final drive against the 49ers: Without Odell Beckham Jr, Victor Cruz or Rueben
Randle, who also has a hamstring injury worth watching. That would leave them
with Dwayne Harris, rookie Geremy Davis and recent practice-squad call-up Myles
White, plus any receivers they might sign by the weekend.
In
the Eagles' must-win game this Monday night against the New York Giants at
Lincoln Financial Field, it is time for cornerback Byron Maxwell to earn his paycheck
by covering Pro-Bowl receiver Odell Beckham Jr. A challenge he said Wednesday
he is not intimidated by.
Oct
14 Ahead
of the game: Why the Giants are in much better shape heading into Philadelphia
this year. The Giants could've easily won all five of their games this season.
They
may not have Odell Beckham Jr. They may not have Rueben Randle. And they almost
certainly won't have Victor Cruz. But on Monday night against the Eagles, the
Giants will still have Shane Vereen.
The
way these Giants are built, their defense is going to have to hold on for
dear life and hope Manning can produce 27-30 points. Chase Utley will be elected
mayor of New York City before the Giants can dust off a legitimate pass rush.
Which
Manning would you rather have as your quarterback right now? It has been an
interesting start to the season for both of the Manning brothers, to say the least.
Former
Giants
Tyler
Sash died from an accidental overdose after mixing two powerful pain medications,
and a history of painful injuries was a contributing factor, a medical examiner
said Tuesday.
Tyler
Sash, who was found dead in his Iowa home on Sept. 8, died of an accidental
drug overdose, an autopsy confirmed. Sash was a key special teams player on the
Giants' 2011 Super Bowl team.
Oct
13 Who's
better than Eli Manning? Giants' QB the East difference. Eli Manning has started
182 consecutive games, two of which were Super Bowl MVP victories.Sometimes we
forget how lucky the Giants are to have him as their quarterback every time they
take the field.
The
Giants signed Shane Vereen away from the Patriots in the offseason with the
hope he would add another dynamic element to their offensive attack. And Vereen,
who had 5 catches for 35 yards and a touchdown prior to the final drive, more
than delivered in crunch time against the Niners.
Before
this year, Tom Coughlin never had a player quite like Shane Vereen, an all-purpose
back with an uncanny knack for finding open space the way few others can. David
Meggett was that type of player for Bill Parcells back in the late 1980s and early
'90s.
Justin
Pugh is in his third NFL season. He's seen a lot and experienced the ups and
downs of pro football in that time. Monday, though, was the first time in his
career that he woke up as a member of a first-place team. "That's crazy," he said
when he thought about it for a moment. "But I want to keep it that way."
After
playing (and winning) for Daniel Fells on Sunday night against the San Francisco
49ers, the Giants had their hospitalized tight end on Skype during their team
meeting on Monday.
The
career of the 32-year-old tight end is almost certainly over because of the
MRSA infection he's been hospitalized with for more than a week, according to
an NFL source familiar with his situation.

(2-2) vs San Francisco (1-3) Preview
The
San Francisco 49ers lost their third straight game Sunday, 17-3 against the visiting
Green Bay Packers. The Packers left with a 4-0 record and the 49er fans wondered
when their offense left town.
The Giants made it two in a row with their 24-10
win over the Buffalo Bills. The Bills were coming off a 41-14 win over the Dolphins,
but couldn't get anything going against the Giants, with the exception of penalties.
Giants - Bills Wrap-Up
Oct
11 Four
games in, the anonymous Giants defensive line - led by second-year man Kerry
Wynn and including such unknowns as Bromley, Kuhn, journeyman George Selvie and
quiet 2013 second-round pick Johnathan Hankins - is spearheading a 'D' that's
holding teams to a league-low 69.8 rushing yards per game and just 3.1 yards per
carry.
The
Giants have led every game entering the fourth quarter. "We've held teams
down pretty well in the first half and even most of the second half," safety
Landon Collins said. "We haven't finished off games as well. That's where
we're letting ourselves down."
Odell
Beckham Jr. knew this was coming. His teammates told him before the season.
His coaches did, too. Opponents are paying much stricter attention to the gifted
wide receiver, and he has become a much bigger target for defensive backs and
defensive coordinators. To which we say: Better get used to it, kid. It's not
going away.
NFC East News
Five
games Giants fans should watch before Sunday Night Football. Oct
10 The
Giants late-game answer stands 5-foot-11 (maybe) and 245 pounds. Nikita Whitlock
is the Giants' starting fullback. He's also a core special teams player and their
new late-game defensive weapon.
It's
great for the Giants that their run defense is leading the NFL, but unacceptable
that their pass defense is dead last. While the defense has held opponents to
69.8 yards rushing per game, it has coughed up 316.3 yards per game passing.
The
Giants find themselves at a crossroads in Week 5. They can either keep rolling
after two straight wins, or they can completely fall apart just as they have in
each of the past two seasons.
Colin
Kaepernick has struggled this year during the 49ers' 1-3 start. But he leads
the league in rushing yards by a quarterback, tied with Carolina's Cam Newton,
but on fewer attempts. The Giants have to prepare for him to be a dual threat.
Oct
9 Monday
will be a year to the day since Victor Cruz suffered a season-ending patella
tendon tear in Philadelphia. With the Giants having a Monday night affair at those
same Eagles scheduled for Oct. 19, he's circling that date on his calendar.
Of
course, after sitting out every game for a year, and missing practice for
the last six weeks, Cruz won't get picky about his return. Aside from performing
exercises that continue to strengthen the knee, Cruz has been relatively inactive.
Being
relentless is helping Giants' defense get job done. Rehired by Tom Coughlin
after a resoundingly successful run with the Giants in 2007-08, which included
a Super Bowl championship, the guy they call "Spags" is working more of his magic
in running a far different defense than the one he left behind.
Oct
8 Wide
receiver Odell Beckham Jr. says he will appeal the fine he received for his
actions in the Giants' 24-10 win over the Buffalo Bills this past Sunday.
Beckham
is going to have to learn to walk away. It's not cool; it's not macho, and
it goes against every bit of the tough-guy football culture, but the 22-year-old
has to do it anyway.
The
Giants didn't find fault with the feisty way Beckham played against Rex Ryan's
defense. Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Wednesday he wants Beckham to continue
blocking hard.
Although
the Bills complained about him, Beckham received strong support from the Giants.
Beckham visited general manager Jerry Reese, who, Beckham said, told him, "Just
keep doing your job, we love everything."
Oct
7 The
staph infection that ended the season for Giants tight end Daniel Fells is
methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, a dangerous bacterial skin
infection.
Multiple
Bills players blasted Beckham to The Buffalo News on Tuesday, calling the
star receiver a "prima donna" and accusing him of constant trash talk and throwing
multiple punches in the Giants' 24-10 win over the Bills this past Sunday at Ralph
Wilson Stadium.
The
Giants will place four all-time greats in their Ring of Honor during halftime
of Sunday night's showdown with the 49ers at MetLife Stadium.
Oct
6 Back
in the summer, there were plenty of concerns about the worthiness - or lack
thereof - of the offensive line. Fast forward to Sunday, when the Giants allowed
just one sack to what arguably is the NFL's best defensive line.
The
Giants have the struggling 49ers, injury-ravaged Cowboys and struggling Eagles
as their next three opponents. The future is starting to look bright. Their next
game against a team with a winning record likely won't be until mid-November when
they play the Patriots.
The
Giants have just lost their finest all-around tight end. Daniel Fells, who
had been dealing with an ankle injury, was treated for the issue over the weekend.
During that treatment, the club discovered he had a staph infection, which will
require further treatment. He was immediately placed on I.R.
It
is a significant loss to the Giants. Fells, 32, was the best blocking tight
end on the roster, by a wide margin. He was also a reliable pass-catcher who earned
the trust of Eli Manning. Fells only played in two games this season and had six
receptions for 60 yards.
Former Giants
Dan
Campbell was named interim head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Mostly a blocking
tight end, Campbell played behind pass-catchers Pete Mitchell and Jeremy Shockey
before leaving the Giants after four seasons.

Last Sunday the Bills were on

home crowd as the Bills pushed their record to 2-1 with a commanding 41-14 win
over the Dolphins.
In a Thursday night game at MetLife Stadium the Giants
commanded the field from start to finish with their 32-21 win over the Washington
Redskins. They were facing an 0-3 start, but came up strong in all areas.
Giants - Redskins
Wrap-Up
Oct 4
Tom
Coughlin just glared when the question was asked about the subject he didn't
want to talk about. There are some things he knows are better off just left unsaid.
After all, he knows Eli Manning hasn't thrown an interception all season. Why
jinx it by talking about it now?
Rueben
Randle knows what he's shown you. In his three-plus years on the Giants, he's
alternately dominated (remember the 132-yard explosion in St. Louis last year?)
and disappeared (eight games with less than 40 receiving yards last year).
Oct
3 Victor
Cruz acknowledged Friday that he suffered a setback in his recovery from his
strained left calf this week and added that he had a platelet-rich plasma therapy
injection Thursday. Though PRP therapy generally takes weeks to work, Giants coach
Tom Coughlin said the team has no plans to put Cruz on injured reserve.
The
veteran receiver won't travel with the team to Buffalo, but will be re-evaluated
at the Giants' facility on Monday by team doctors. Until then, he'll avoid icing
or wetting the area where he got the shot, just letting the blood go through the
muscle to stimulate healing. And he'll hope.
The
Giants could end up using Sunday's game to determine if the combination of
Dwayne Harris and Geremy Davis can help pick up the slack for Cruz as long as
he remains out or if they need to try and add an impact player at the position.
Former Pro Bowler Wes Welker and former Giants first-round pick Hakeem Nicks worked
out for the team earlier this week.
When
the team parted ways with the drop-prone Preston Parker on Sept. 22, they
did so thinking Victor Cruz would be back on the field for this Sunday's game
in Buffalo against the Bills. So the Giants will go into their second straight
game with just four healthy wideouts on their roster, and their No. 3 (Dwayne
Harris) and No. 4 (Geremy Davis) receivers have just one catch for five yards
between them so far in 2015. That is where veteran Wes Welker comes in to the
mix.
Oct 2
Victor
Cruz will not be available for the Giants on Sunday in Buffalo, coach Tom
Coughlin said Thursday.Coughlin said there's no timetable for Cruz's return.
A
calf injury had sidelined Cruz since mid-August, but he appeared ready to
rejoin the team after several workouts on the side. On Wednesday, though, he was
unable to get through the earliest drills of the practice.
Giants
fans were going to see their two dynamic receivers, Victor Cruz and Odell
Beckham Jr., back on the field together for the first time in nearly a year. Beckham
has played less than two games alongside Cruz in his career.
Oct
1 Victor
Cruz was convinced his return would happen this Sunday. So saying the Giants
and their star wide receiver were blindsided by his latest setback would be an
understatement.
What
was expected to be a day of great uplift with the long-awaited arrival of
Victor Cruz on the practice field instead devolved into a downer when Cruz pulled
himself out early and suffered a setback in what he's dubbed 'The Return.'
Now,
he is almost certain to sit out on Sunday after removing himself from a workout.
Rookie teammate Geremy Davis said he approached Cruz on the practice field and
that the veteran indicated he doesn't believe the situation is serious.
Sept
30 The
studying began in mid-May, long before the Giants - or anyone - could guess
that Rex Ryan's quarterback would be the scrambling Tyrod Taylor. They'll need
to be prepared against the surprising Taylor, who's piloted the Bills to a 2-1
start. For five seasons under Perry Fewell, the Giants were a picture of ineptitude
against the read-option attack.
The
knock on the Bills heading into this season was that they put together a worthy
team without a worthy quarterback, a familiar refrain for a Rex Ryan-coached outfit.
They had EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel and Taylor, and there was no smart money on Taylor
emerging as the starter. But he did.
The
Giants brought in three well-known, but unemployed, pass catchers on Tuesday
for workouts. But nothing more than that. Ex-Giant wide receiver Hakeem Nicks,
former Redskins tight end Chris Cooley and former Broncos and Patriots slot receiver
Wes Welker all had tryouts with the Giants, but none signed contracts.
Sept
29 We
may finally see the full-strength Giants on Sunday. The Giants are not complete
just yet, but they hope to be by Sunday.
Others
who have been sidelined with injuries, including, starters Robert Ayers Jr.,
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Ereck Flowers, also participated in the abbreviated
workout.
Tears,
touchdowns? What to expect from Victor Cruz's return. What began with tears
of anguish last Oct. 12, when he tore his right patellar tendon and was carted
off the field at the Linc, may very well culminate in tears of joy Sunday in Buffalo
when, if all goes as expected the rest of this week, Cruz finally begins his comeback.
Victor
Cruz's appearance in a helmet and shoulder pads elicited more than a few reintroductions
from teammates, a predictable price to pay for the 51-week injury layoff Cruz
has endured. Obviously, the Giants are thrilled, and as Cruz bounced and smiled
his way around the locker room Monday, his usual infectious energy was at full
blast.
Sept 28
Victor
Cruz makes it official: He will play vs. Buffalo Bills. Cruz has not played
since suffering a season-ending patellar tendon in his right knee against the
Eagles on Oct. 12, 2014.
Just
who are these Giants? It's a question that 1-2 Big Blue will try to answer
next Sunday when it visits Rex Ryan's Bills in Buffalo.

26 Special

that euphoric state Friday afternoon during a conference with the media, referencing
the team's first victory of the season - a 32-21 success over Washington in which
they did not lose a fourth-quarter lead.
It's
been speculated for several weeks that Victor Cruz might make his season debut
for the Giants in the Week 4 game next weekend. On Friday, Tom Coughlin formally
announced that is the plan.
Coughlin
relayed he received word from the Giants' medical staff that the plan is for
Cruz to make his 2015 debut in game No. 4, Oct. 4 in Buffalo.

Giants
- Falcons Wrap-Up
Sept
24 This
is the second consecutive season the Giants and Redskins faced each other
in a Thursday night game and it was exactly one year ago (minus one day) that
Kirk Cousins started at quarterback in place of injured Robert Griffin III and
the Giants came away with four interceptions in a 45-14 rout at FedEx Field.
You
can't talk about the Redskins team without mentioning the quarterback position.
They've had 16 starting quarterbacks in the past 16 years.Just before this regular
season started, Kirk Cousins was named by Jay Gruden to be the (current) starting
quarterback. Gruden is the (current) head coach of the Redskins, and it's worth
mentioning because in the past 16 years, the Redskins have had 8 head coaches,
including a repeat performance by Joe Gibbs.
The
highlight videos of great Giants defenses of old began playing way back in
spring minicamp, Steve Spagnuolo's way of inspiring his young 'D,' showing off
the hard-nosed legacy of a proud franchise. So far, this Giants defense has been
nothing like those units.
Sept
23 Every
loss, every mental mistake, every dropped pass, inches the Giants closer to
what is starting to seem inevitable. It's no secret that in a "win or else"
season, Tom Coughlin's the one on the hot seat. He's the one most likely to take
the fall if everything goes wrong. And so far everything has gone wrong.
Eli
Manning has been the focus of most of the criticism surrounding the winless
Giants, but Preston Parker was a frequent target, too. The little-known receiver,
who barely made the roster on the final cutdown day, dropped five passes in the
first two games, including four that would have gone for first downs. And now
he's gone.
Giants
cut Preston Parker after five drops to start the season. Parker was the first
casualty of the team's win-or-else campaign, cut due to his inability to make
catches for an offense looking to fill the void left by injured receiver Victor
Cruz.
Parker,
a fourth-year pro, had five receptions for 43 yards in the first two games
but will be remembered more for what he didn't catch. He had three crucial third-down
drops in the 27-26 loss to the Cowboys, then two more drops - including one on
fourth down that ended the game - against Atlanta.
Jon
Beason's long absence from the Giants lineup looks just about over. The veteran
middle linebacker, who hasn't played in almost a year because of injury, was a
full participant in practice Tuesday and appears likely to make his 2015 debut
Thursday night against the Redskins.
Victor
Cruz ran on grass Tuesday for the first time since injuring his calf Aug.
19, raising hope that he'll be ready to make his debut in Week 4 against the Bills
on Oct. 4. It seems the only thing holding Cruz back from a return this week is
the schedule.
Sept 22
For
years, he's been the bedrock of the Giants, the clutch franchise quarterback,
finding ways to win even when everything else had gone wrong. And to Eli Manning,
none of that has changed, even if his early performance in 2015 makes you think
otherwise.
Giants'
worst mistakes coming from Eli Manning. The most shocking part of Coughlin's
message was not so much that mistakes are happening, but who is making the worst
of them. Quarterback Eli Manning, the man who built a reputation on smarts and
skills.
Tom
Coughlin's reason to believe: Everyone else is a mess. As he prepared to speak
to his battered Giants early Monday afternoon, he already knew one of his first
talking points. He was going to take the players through a tour of the NFC East.
And
you think the Giants have problems? Well, they do. But at least they're not
alone. The entire NFC East is in such disarray after two weeks of games that even
the team that is 2-0 with two victories in the division and standing atop the
standings -- the Cowboys -- is facing major issues.
The
Giants should be taken to task for the inadvertent freeze-out of Odell Beckham
Jr. in the second half of Sunday's 24-20 loss to the Falcons, but the larger issue
might be this: Where the heck is Rueben Randle?

Sunday the Giants had an opportunity to beat the Dallas Cowboys on the road in

they did, winning the game 27-26.

Tom
Coughlin knows his Giants can not suffer another embarrassing failure this
week. Once they got past the agony and drama and the race between Tom Coughlin
and Manning and McAdoo to accept all the blame, they were left with the ugly truth
about what really happened that night.
The
Giants are proud of their winning tradition. Their four Super Bowl victories
match the Patriots for the most Vince Lombardi trophies since 1986. But lately
the tradition has lived more on reputation than reality after three straight non-playoff
seasons and missed playoffs in five of the past six years.
Victor
Cruz won't play Sunday, but he expects to be back on the field for the Giants
in the next two weeks. Cruz said his surgically repaired knee "feels great"
and isn't an issue in his bid to get out on the field for the first time since
tearing his patellar tendon last October in Philadelphia. Cruz's calf, on the
other hand, has been a big concern.
Eli
Manning is not a local radio star. He just gets paid like one. He earns somewhere
around $250,000 per season, according to radio sources, for his weekly appearances
that last a few minutes on WFAN. This is a mere pittance compared to the $84 million
contract ($65 million guaranteed) he just signed with the Giants. Manning does
not need the radio money. So, why does he bother doing the weekly spot? Why deal
with the aggravation these sessions produce?

NFL
admits it blew 2 calls that hurt Giants in the loss to Cowboys. Cornerback
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartiewas called for pass interference on Dallas Cowboys
wide receiver Terrance Williams in the third quarter. Tight end Daniel Fells was
held on the infamous third-and-goal play late in the game, and a penalty should
have been called, according to the report.
The
admission of the two blown calls, which was first reported by the NFL Network,
was largely meaningless, though, since the damage had already been done. And it
can be argued that had the refs gotten either call right - most definitely the
second won - the Giants would've won and would never have been in position to
mess up the game in the end.
Preston
Parker ruined three offensive series in the 27-26 loss with dropped passes
on third down, at times doing more to stop the Giants than the Cowboys' defense.
The last drop was a killer, as a deep pass from Eli Manning dropped in and out
of Parker's hands on the Dallas 18-yard line, forcing a Giants punt.

It's
a copycat league, so who can blame Tom Coughlin for taking a page from Bill
Belichick's book on crisis control? "I'm going forward to Atlanta, thank you very
much," Coughlin said Wednesday in the face of questions about Sunday night's mental
meltdowns in Dallas.
The
coach has no interest in reviewing the disappointing opening night loss in
Dallas, nor its aftermath. Asked questions about Eli Manning and Rashad Jennings,
two key figures in the final offensive possession, Coughlin stuck to his script,
saying, "We're on to Atlanta."
Anything
would have been better than the way the Giants played it. You still wonder
what Eli was saying and what his coaches were hearing when he told them after
second down his cunning plan to have Rashad Jennings NOT score.
Manning
reiterated his faulty thought process: "I wanted to score a touchdown,
that was the goal. I was just trying to run as much clock, if they give up and
let you score, get down to the 1-inch line and try to score on second and third
down.'' He acknowledged a mental gaffe can hurt worse than a physical mistake.
Last
Sunday's game came down to late, short plays from inside the 4-yard line for
the offense, but the bigger, more long-term issue may have been the lack of big-gain
passing plays in the Giants' game plan. That's why Tom Coughlin and the players
want to stretch the field a little bit more beginning this week against the Falcons.
Here's
the thing about Manning: No matter how intense the scrutiny, he really does
have the perfect mentality for a quarterback. He's able to block it out and move
on. It's not a put-on. He compartmentalizes his emotions as well as any athlete
I've ever seen, and like a great pitcher after a horrendous outing, he bounces
back in his next start.

The
Giants are easy targets these days. What happened at the end of Sunday night's
loss to the Dallas Cowboys was such a debacle that seemingly everyone is offering
their opinion on what went wrong.
Boomer
Esiason says mismanagement by the Giants' quarterback and coach in the final
two minutes of Sunday's loss to the Cowboys makes him wonder about their overall
achievements.
There
was no defending Manning's late-game decisions Sunday night, and Coughlin
didn't try to do that, although he expressed confidence that this instance was
a one-time thing.
Doctors
say Jason Pierre-Paul's football career is in question after a report Tuesday
the Giants defensive end is also missing part of his right thumb from the July
4 fireworks incident that already cost him his right index finger.
Some
around the team - including coach Tom Coughlin - expressed optimism about
Pierre-Paul's positive frame of mind, but, more and more, the franchise seems
prepared to play out the rest of the season without him, something quarterback
Eli Manning made clear the day after Pierre-Paul's visit.
They
have not rescinded the franchise tag they placed on Pierre-Paul prior to the
accident, but each week of action that he misses lowers the maximum value of the
tender by $871,000.
The
Giants had a golden opportunity to beat the Cowboys on Sunday night before
incompetent game management and a defensive collapse did them in down the stretch.
But lost opportunity aside, the Giants were not expected to win in Dallas.
It's
new territory for the Giants when there is doubt about the quarterback or
the coach and their ability to function soundly under the pressures such as Sunday's
game imposed. Put that doubt on both of them, and you have to wonder how the team
will move forward. If they can.

Why
the squib kick? 4 questions Giants must answer after collapse. The Giants'
heartbreaking 27-26 loss to the Cowboys left open several questions, many of which
were answered on Monday. But some unanswered questions remain.
The
Giants can't do anything to change the disheartening 27-26 loss in Dallas.
But they can't have a Cowboys hangover as they prepare for their home opener Sunday
against the Falcons.
As
it all unfolded, you wondered what the Giants were doing. Their actions near
the end of Sunday's 27-26 loss to the Dallas Cowboys were dubious, at best.
Eli
Manning didn't know how many timeouts the Cowboys had. Manning told Rashad
Jennings not to score, and the sideline didn't instruct him to do so. No one told
Manning to take a sack on third down. Coughlin says the goal was to get back up
10 points, but the Giants seemingly did everything to not accomplish that.
Eli
Manning
seemed to think that the Giants would be running four plays trying to score
the touchdown, which affected his decision-making on the key third down. Coughlin
was planning on kicking a field goal on fourth down, but he never told Manning.
It
was an awful way to start a season for Manning and Coughlin, two guys who,
whatever their failings, are expected to know what they are doing as much as any
quarterback/coach tandem south of Foxborough.
Pundits
will probably dissect the Giants' decisions or lack thereof on their final
drive of the game vs. Dallas for days to come - as they should as it's simply
inexplicable that the coach and the quarterback were seemingly not aware of how
many timeouts the Cowboys had left, among other things.

Watching at home has its advantages, like no one was able to see how I carried

Atlanta and hoping that everyone will be driving home with a smile on their faces."

Last year the
Cowboys won the NFC Division title with a 12-4 record and advanced to the playoffs.
The Giants finished with a 6-10 record and lost both division games to the Cowboys.
Dallas Cowboys - Last year at this time we asked if Tony Romo's career would last
long enough for him to win a Super Bowl or at least another playoff game. It turned
out that he led his team to a division title with a 12-4 record. In one of the
best seasons of his career, Romo topped the league with a completion record of
69.9 percent and with passing yardage that was also the best at 8.52 yards per
attempt.
This season the Cowboys strengthened their already formidable offensive
line to the point where they were willing to let their top running back, NFL rushing
champion DeMarco Murray, walk. There's the thought that anyone can play the running
back position behind this line, but they'd better be right. One of the reasons
Romo did so well was that their strong running game had to be respected.
Sept
13 It
has been four years since the Giants reached the playoffs. Co-owner John Mara
put a win-or-else mandate on the entire organization in 2015. It just remains
to be seen whether this team is good enough or talented enough to save some jobs.
The
Giants have missed the playoffs three straight years, turned collapsing into
an art form in the last two. One more year like that and Tom Coughlin, the only
coach Manning has ever known, might be out of a job. And Manning doesn't want
that.
It
was miraculous, when you think about it, what Eli Manning and Odell Beckham
did last season. When it was over, Manning had his finest season since his "elite"
performance of 2011. And Beckham had one of the most incredible seasons a receiver
has ever had. Now all they have to do is do it again.
The
most revealing aspect of Manning's four-year, $84-million deal was not the
overall value or the $65 million in guaranteed money. It was the no-trade clause
the Giants agreed to, apparently after expressing some reluctance about such a
commitment.
Reviews
of Beckham Jr.'s debut season read like Broadway show plaudits. "Startling!"
says Giants owner John Mara. "Best catch I've ever seen!" raves Jets
cornerback Darrelle Revis. "I mean, Odell Beckham, he's an icon," says
Giants rookie Geremy Davis, looking at Beckham Jr.'s locker across from his one
recent afternoon.
That
one-handed catch against the Cowboys last year that propelled him to instant
fame -- it comes with a bit of a bitter taste. Beckham won the highlight battle
that night, but Dallas won the game. "At the end of the day, it was great to have
the catch and everything, but we still lost the game."
Giants
owner John Mara was sort of kidding back in August, when he wondered aloud
about how many fingers Jason Pierre-Paul still had. According to a report, Pierre-Paul
may have even less than nine. Giants fear Jason Pierre-Paul, injured in a fireworks
accident, could miss the entire season.
Sept
12 It's
hard to see where the Giants are headed entering the 2015 season after three
straight years without the playoffs. Wherever they're going - this year and beyond
- it will be with Eli Manning as their quarterback.
Eli
Manning and the Giants both finally got what they wanted. He will be the team's
quarterback for the rest of his career. That became official on Friday when the
two sides finally concluded negotiations on a new four-year, $84 million contract
extension.
Manning
is beginning his 12th season as the Giants' starting quarterback. He led the
Giants to victories in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI, and was selected the most valuable
player in both games. Manning is also a three-time Pro Bowl selection, most recently
in 2012.
NFL News
How
much blame New England deserves for the issues the Steelers coaching staff
encountered during Thursday night's season opener is a bit of a mystery. For an
undetermined amount of time, the Steelers heard the Patriots radio broadcast in
their headsets. That it happened is the only thing not in dispute.
The
Steelers now become at least the fifth team making accusations, with the team
saying that its coach-to-coach communications repeatedly faced interference from
the Patriots' radio broadcast, and that the interference would stop when a league
official came to the sideline to deal with it, only to start up again when the
league official walked away.
Sept
11 Tom
Coughlin's steady hand has put two Super Bowl trophies in the franchise lobby,
but with no playoff appearances since the second of those titles four seasons
ago, he is not alone in his impatience. The burning desire to get back to the
postseason is tempered by an almost grim acceptance that failure to do so almost
guarantees sweeping changes.
The
Giants, still rebuilding after two consecutive losing seasons, have major
question marks on both sides of the ball after the preseason. Head coach Tom Coughlin,
who is 3-6 in nine head-to-head matchups with Dallas' Jason Garrett, can't afford
another slow start to the season. Second-year offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo
is trying to settle an unstable offensive line, while new/old defensive coordinator
Steve Spagnuolo is tasked with patching together a shaky secondary.
It
would not have been the way of the Giants, but would it have been so terrible
if they allowed Eli Manning to play out this season, the final year of his contract,
rather than, in effect, making him a Giant for life?
Sometime
in the next day or so, Eli Manning will put his signature on a new four-year,
$84 million contract extension that will put him in line to make $101.5 million
over the next five seasons. And that is money the Giants will be very, very happy
to pay.
Tom
Coughlin said he's "not ruling anything out" regarding Victor Cruz's
availability for the Giants' season opener Sunday night in Dallas. But Cruz's
fellow star receivers are resigned to playing without him in AT&T Stadium.
When
Tony Romo said on Wednesday that he will be looking for certain matchups he
likes in the Giants' secondary Sunday night, Landon Collins wasn't named specifically.
But the rookie safety has been around long enough to know Romo was talking about
him. So Collins said Thursday that he'd welcome an entrance exam to the NFL from
one of its premier passers.
Sept
10 It's
game week. The Giants are actually busy these days preparing for an opponent.
They're game-planning and scheming to stop Tony Romo, Dez Bryant and the Dallas
Cowboys. They're preparing to play Sunday night in a raucous atmosphere at Cowboys
Stadium. How exactly? Giants coach Tom Coughlin revealed that and more on Wednesday.
The
Cowboys won the game, but "The Catch" is still a touchy subject
around here almost a year later. Not only do they want to act as if Odell Beckham
Jr.'s miraculous one-handed grab against them last November never happened, but
mention it to the primary defender victimized on the play and watch the expletives
fly. "You're pissing me off with these questions," Cowboys cornerback
Brandon Carr barked at The Post on Wednesday.
Prince
Amukamara is entering his fifth season with the Giants and looking to do something
he has never been able to accomplish in his career. Start 1-0. That's because
the Giants have lost four straight season openers, a trend that has them so jittery
about Sunday's game in Dallas that some are straight-faced calling it a "must-win"
contest.
How
badly do the Giants need to beat the Dallas Cowboys in Sunday night's season
opener? To hear Prince Amukamara tell it, they don't have an option. After four
straight years of early season stumbles and bumbles, a loss at Cowboys Stadium
would be ... well, it's best to let Amukamara explain.
Jason
Pierre-Paul came, he showed his hand and he left. "Keep going right where
we are,'' Tom Coughlin said Wednesday. "Nothing's changed.'' No change means
Pierre-Paul is not part of this Giants team, at least not now.
There
is no way they can count on JPP playing this year. Maybe he'll show up again
and maybe he'll even suit up some Sunday, but if JPP was anywhere close to returning
to football, he never would've hopped on a plane to return to South Florida on
Wednesday.
Eli
Manning said he never meant to put pressure on the Giants organization to
get his contract done quickly, and it "doesn't matter one way or the other"
whether it is wrapped up by opening night. And that's good, because there's still
a chance that it might not be done by then.

to the franchise too often already, first Ann Mara, the ultimate Giant matriarch,
then Frank Gifford, the ultimate Giant, and now Tyler Sash, a small-town kid from
Iowa who beat the odds and made it as a reserve safety and special teamer, No.
39, and became a Super Bowl XLVI champion.
Sept
9 Jason
Pierre-Paul may think he's ready to return to the field. The Giants don't
seem to agree. The hand was not healed to the point where they felt comfortable
putting him on the field.
When
the Giants' team doctors finally got to examine his right hand on Monday at
the Hospital for Special Surgery, they did not believe he was healthy enough to
play, according to a source.
If
the Giants opt to put Pierre-Paul on the non-football injury list, he must
sit out the entire 2015 season. At present, he is on the reserve/franchise tag
list and does not count on the 53-man roster.
It's
expected that if Pierre-Paul misses any games due to the injuries to his right
hand his salary will be adjusted accordingly, but that has to be negotiated by
both sides. According to one report, Pierre-Paul is considering holding out the
entire season if he does not receive his full allotment.
Jasper
Brinkley was unable to land a spot on the Cowboys roster. But he could still
find himself on the field at AT&T Stadium on opening night. The veteran linebacker
signed a contract with the New York Giants Tuesday, a source confirmed. A skeptic
would say the Giants are simply making the move to get an inside look at what
the Cowboys will throw at them Sunday night.
Giants
sign $2M Cowboys washout ahead of showdown The newest addition is linebacker
Jasper Brinkley, who certainly should come in handy this week after spending the
entire summer with the Cowboys, the team the Giants just to happen to face Sunday
night in the season opener.
Eli
Manning has expressed a sense of urgency regarding his contract extension
for the first time and may even have set a deadline for a deal to be finalized.
The
parameters of a new contract for Manning should not be difficult to formulate,
given the template established by Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers and Philip
Rivers of the Chargers - the two other marquee quarterbacks in Manning's 2004
NFL Draft class.
Former Giants
Tyler
Sash dead at 27, reports say. Sash spent two seasons with the team, playing
in all 16 games as a rookie in 2011 as the Giants won the Super Bowl before appearing
in just 7 games in 2012.
Sept
8 Stevie
Brown's second stint with the Giants lasted one week. The veteran safety was
cut and replaced by another former Giant, fellow safety Craig Dahl, on Monday.
Dahl,
who was cut by the 49ers this past weekend, spent his first two seasons in
the league with the Giants, winning a Super Bowl in 2007 in defensive coordinator
Steve Spagnuolo's first stint with the team.
Defensive
end Jason Pierre-Paul is in New Jersey and "he's ready to go," a person with
knowledge of the situation told NJ Advance Media. It's a matter of Pierre-Paul
passing his physical and at what percentage the Giants are willing to accept from
the Pro Bowl defensive end.
Some
close to Pierre-Paul believe he is in shape to play -- the NFL Network reported
that his representatives have been sending training videos to the Giants to demonstrate
his readiness -- but that could be a case of hoping the Giants are ready to pay.
Still, there is a very slim chance he could be on the field Sunday against the
Cowboys.
Giants'
fullback Nikita Whitlock ready to 'just try to crush everybody I can'. Nikita
Whitlock is now the Giants' starting fullback.
His
primary responsibility though will be fullback and special teams, the latter
of which he will play on all four units as he did in the preseason.
Sept
7 Tom
Coughlin didn't exactly rip up his roster and start over, but he had no choice
but to make some difficult changes. He got rid of some of his favorite players,
cut some others with still-unfulfilled promise, and pushed a couple of reliable
veterans out the door.
The
Giants were awarded second-year defensive tackle Louis Nix III from the Texans
and cornerback and kickoff returner Asa Jackson from the Ravens. Both were waived
Saturday by their former teams.
The
Giants announced the signing of six players to their practice squad, all of
whom were with the team in training camp. That leaves room for four more on the
10-player practice squad.
Now
that the preseason is over, the Giants can start getting ready for the Cowboys.
And for Dallas. They are not, in this case, one and the same. So unique is the
experience of playing in a season-opening game at AT&T Stadium that it requires
special preparations.
The
off-the-grid, Twitter-shunning life of Eli Manning. In that regard, he does
not "get'' the millennial generation he's surrounded by, young guys constantly
expressing the need to, well, express.
If
the Seattle Seahawks ever decide to deal their holdout safety Kam Chancellor,
the Giants made it clear they want in on the bidding. But it still remains a longshot
that it will ever get that far.

Among
those trimmed were veterans such as linebacker Jameel McClain, last year's

The

5 One
of the Giants' most well-known players is now looking for a job. On Friday
morning, the Giants released punter Steve Weatherford. To replace him, they acquired
Steelers punter Brad Wing in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick.
It
is not a shock that Weatherford, 32, was waived, as Tom Coughlin recently
strongly hinted that the punting competition was far from settled even after cutting
Robert Malone. After personally informing Weatherford he had lost his job, Coughlin
was in no mood to discuss the decision.
Out
of respect for Weatherford, Coughlin did not expand on the reasons. Rather,
Coughlin insisted on speaking about his four memorable seasons with Big Blue,
which included winning Super Bowl XLVI. Pressed further on the moves, Coughlin
said, "Well, you know what, this is Steve's day and I am going to stay away
from talking about Wing or anything else, including the decision."
Things
unfortunately started to go south for Weatherford last year when in Week 1,
he suffered what turned out to be torn ligaments in his ankle, an injury that
he tried to push through. In doing so, Weatherford soon developed a back problem
that forced him to adjust his kicking mechanics. As a result, his production dropped
to the point where the team decided it was time to go in another direction.
Here
are five things you need to know about the new Giants punter. 1 - Originally
undrafted out of LSU in 2013, Wing became the Steelers' primary punter and holder
in 2014, punting 61 times with a 43.7-yard average and landing 20 inside the 20-yard
line. His average of 8.2 yards per return ranked 12th in the NFL in 2014 while
his net average of 38.8 was good for 20th.
