Giants (3-3) vs Cowboys (2-3) The
Cowboys took a 30-6 loss from the New England Patriots in the last game they played.
The only good news was that there was a bye coming up as they continue to struggle
without Tony Romo. The Giants started off strong with an opening drive touchdown
in Philadelphia last week. Unfortunately they failed to come up with any more
points for the rest of the game and lost 27-7 to the Eagles. Giants
- Eagles Wrap-Up Dallas
Cowboys As Tony Romo goes, so goes the Cowboys.
They have dropped three straight since losing their starting quarterback to a
broken collarbone in a week 2 game with the Eagles. Backup
quarterback Brandon Weeden came in for Romo and threw a touchdown pass to help
cement a win. That was the last game they've won and in their next three losses
Weeden has thrown just one more touchdown. Last month when they traded for Matt
Cassel to back him up Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stated that you wouldn't find
a more "gifted passer" in the NFL than Brandon Weeden. Since then, over
the bye week, the Cowboys made the switch from Weeden to Cassel at quarterback. Looking
back years ago, Jason Garrett, the current head coach, stepped in when Troy Aikman
went down. Garrett was soon replaced when the Cowboys brought in Bernie Kosar.
So it goes with some of the younger (more gifted?) backup quarterbacks. In the
NFL there's nothing like having a real experienced hand running the show. Weeden
has lost 11 straight games as a starter, going back to his time as a first-round
draft pick in Cleveland. Cassel is 35-38 as a starter for various teams. As for
Tony Romo, he is on short-term injured reserve which means he'll first be eligible
to play Nov. 22 at Miami. Dallas
Cowboys Offense They've
brought in Matt Cassel to do what Brandon Weeden hasn't been able to do. Weeden
has practice and real game experience with the offensive players on this team,
but he is still learning the starting quarterback role. Cassel has had only practice
time, but he is well versed in the game and knows how to run an offense and read
defenses. Cassel will have the confidence to throw deeper and use the whole field
and that will certainly benefit Terrance Williams who has caught both of Weeden's
two touchdown passes. Overall though their connection has been poor. With Weeden
starting, Williams has 13 incompletions, 5 catches for 70 yards and 1 touchdown.
Deep threat Dez
Bryant has missed four games with a fractured right foot and will be out for this
game. Running back Joseph Randle is the main ball carrier and he's averaging
3.9 yards a carry. Darren McFadden usually comes in on passing plays for protection
and for his receiving skills, which were really tested last time against New England.
McFadden was the leading receiver, catching 9 out of 10 passes for 62 yards. Over
the first four games he's only been thrown to three other times, catching them
all, including one 19 yarder in the first game with the Giants. McFadden might
become a bigger part of their gameplan this week. Tight end Jason Witten is the
team's leading receiver with 30 catches, but the Patriots limited him to 5 for
33 yards, his lowest output on the season. That said, Witten caught 8 out of 9
passes and had two touchdowns against the Giants in the first game. Dallas
Cowboys Defense This
defense was doing well and got an added boost when Greg Hardy and Rolando McClain
came off their four-game suspensions. They combined for three of the five sacks
on Tom Brady. In addition, rookie defensive end Randy Gregory, who missed four
games after suffering a high-ankle sprained in the season opener against the Giants,
is expected back. In that game he was one of their most effective pass-rushers
with three quarterback pressures on Eli Manning. Now, combined with Hardy, they
make a dangerous pair on the line for any offense. McClain teams with Sean Lee
at the linebacker position and it's hard to get a runner past them. The Cowboys
have improved their passing defense over last season. They held Odell Beckham
Jr. to 5 catches for 44 yards last time the teams played. One problem they have
is with the takeaways. The Cowboys are tied for last in the league with only two
interceptions and one fumble recovery. Giants
offense Eli Manning has been able to get
the ball out quickly, but as we saw last week, once a defense sees that there
is no running game to fall back on, they can take chances and blitz more. It gets
worse if the Giants fall behind on the scoreboard. There have been only seven
sacks on Manning this season, but three came last week in the game with the Eagles.
The big question following that one-sided loss was why the ball wasn't getting
into Odell Beckham Jr.'s hands during the second half. It's gets hard to look
downfield at your double covered receiver for a clear shot when the offensive
line is crumbling around you. Manning said that his other single covered receivers
have to make plays. Victor Cruz is still not available and Rueben Randle is doing
his best with a hamstring problem. The unit was gifted four turnovers by their
defense and either turned the ball back, or couldn't get close enough for Josh
Brown to attempt a field goal for the entire game. The Giants just can't make
the kind of mistakes they made last week and need to get their ground attack going.
The Giants are the only team in the NFL without a 100-yard rushing game. Right
now Rashad Jennings is the team leader, averaging 3.7 yards a carry, and he's
done nicely catching nearly every pass, 14 out of 15 for 132 yards. Giants
defense They were opportunistic last week
against Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford and picked him off three times. Once again
they'll be facing a quarterback who isn't quite settled in with his team so there
should be some opportunities. It doesn't matter who's throwing the ball, covering
Jason Witten is always a problem. Linebacker Uani' Unga started for the first
time in the Cowboys game and got to see the damage that Witten can do. Since then
he has become the team leader in interceptions (2), tackles (42) and is tied with
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie with 2 forced fumbles. Unfortunately Unga is listed
as questionable, but Jon Beason is expected to play, as well as Devon Kennard,
Robert Ayers and Johnathan Hankin, so maybe there will be a decent pass rush.
The Giants have only 8 sacks on the season and Damontre Moore leads the team
with 3. It would be nice if his didn't include a penalty price tag to go along
with it as we saw last time. The secondary will have to stay alert as more balls
will be coming their way and thrown deeper than what they saw last game playing
against Bradford. In the secondary, cornerback Jayron Hosley and safeties Brandon
Meriweather and Landon Collins all had interceptions in that game. Overall The
last time these teams met up, the Cowboys won 27-26. It was the first game of
the season and one where the Giants could have come out on top to start off on
a better note. The Giants are coming off a poor performance against the Eagles
and another one this week would give them 3 losses in the division. With Tony
Romo out and the Cowboys shuffling quarterbacks, the Giants have an opportunity
to even their record against them at 1-1 and they'd better take it.
