Giants blow it and let
San Francisco come from behind to win 39-38.
Kerry Collins completed 29 of 43 for 342 yards, 1 INT, 4 TD.
Tiki Barber rushed 26 times for 115 yards, and ran for 1 TD.
Amani Toomer had 3 touchdown catches in the first half.
Jeremy Shockey had 7 catches for 68 yards and 1 touchdown.
Jason Sehorn had 1 interception.
The Giants just let it all slip away.
"I don't know how the players felt, but I felt like Cinderella after midnight. Near the end of the third quarter, all the good things
began to disappear. Our offense disappeared. They had been moving the ball up and down the field all game scoring touchdowns, and then that slowed to scoring a field goal, and then nothing.
Our defense disappeared. After letting the 49ers score on their opening drive, they held them pretty good until the witching hour, and you had to wonder if our field goal unit ever really
existed at all this game."
This was a tough way for the season to end.
"I'm very disappointed right now. I'll tell you, with all the up and down roller coaster rides the Giants put me through this year, I don't know whether I should be happy or sad.
I really feel drained. It seemed like they could go all the way. This team really developed and the good things were really great to enjoy. There were a lot of news stories about individual
players and their accomplishments, and how far the Giants had come, and that's what I'll be thinking about during the off season."
The Giants had a big lead and time of possession.
"They had every thing they needed except staying power and the ability to put points on the board in the fourth quarter, although 38 points should be enough to win a football
game. Niners quarterback Jeff Garcia got red hot to the tune of throwing for 331 yards and 3 touchdowns. Garcia also ran for 60 yards and 1 touchdown. Thanks to him, and the way the Giants
played on defense in the second half, the 49ers were able to overcome a 24 point deficit, and pull off the second-biggest comeback in playoff history."
The Giants could have won it in the end.
"They tried a 41-yard field goal on third down with six seconds left. Matt Bryant had missed a field goal earlier on a poor snap by newly signed veteran Trey Junkin, but made one after
that. This one killed our chances. Fassel can take a bow for this, since he once again tinkered with a field goal unit that was decent and working. He tried to make it even better, just like
his last failed attempt earlier in the season when he replaced holder Matt Allen. Instead of having Chris Bober snapping the ball this game, we had Junkin, and just like before, it didn't
work."
Anything else?
"Well, for the year, the offensive line really came along. Kerry Collins, Amani Toomer and Tiki Barber had great years. Jeremy Shockey was an amazing discovery. Ron Dixon developed well,
and was surprisingly good coming back from his surgery. Ron Dayne is still a mystery.
On Defense, Mike Barrow is a true leader on the field, and just as it took him a year or so to get with the Giants style of defense, Kenny Holmes appears to be on that same schedule.
Special teams is much better this year, with Delvin Joyce being a keeper as the return guy. Head coach Jim Fassel does as much bad, as he does good for this team. He needs to tinker a bit
less, and to get better control of his players."

Notes:
San Francisco's rally was the biggest in NFC playoff history.
Only Buffalo's 32-point comeback in a 41-38 victory over Houston in January 1993 was bigger.
Giants safety Shaun Williams was ejected for throwing a punch at San Francisco center Jeremy Newberry.
San Francisco will face Tampa Bay next Sunday.
