Giants win over Washington
19-17.
Kerry Collins was 22-of-46 with 1 TD and 2 INTs.
Jeremy Shockey had 11 catches for 111 yards.
Amani Toomer had 8 catches for 95 yards and 1 touchdown.
Matt Bryant converted field goals of 43, 34, 33 and 19 yards.
Michael Strahan had 2 sacks.
Giants defense held Washington to 166 total yards.
The Giants were fired up in the beginning.
"Yes, and then all that rain put the fire out. Everything seemed so quick paced at first, and I don't know what happened, but I never
felt like I was at a football game that lasted so long. I'll tell you, it doesn't help when you're in the stands getting soaked, and a replay challenge lasts for a good 10 or 15 minutes.
You're right though, the defense had the Redskins three and out, the first two times, and in between that, the Giants marched downfield mostly showcasing Jeremy Shockey. That was thrilling
to watch, and we all wanted to see the Giants take it in for seven, but they were stopped at the 25. After last week, we didn't know what to expect, with the field goal team, but Matt Bryant
kicked a 43 yard field goal to put us up 3-0 on our first drive."
The Giants held Washington pretty good up to the end of the first quarter.
"We had them stopped at our 36, but Will Allen got carried away and his taunting penalty really hurt us. The refs gave the Redskins 15 yards, and then on the next play, Will Peterson
got a lousy call against him for pass interference. That put them at our 8, and they were able to come away with a touchdown. To think that we had them stopped, and something like a taunting
call leads them to going ahead in the game 7-3."
The Giants caught up at the half.
"About halfway through the second quarter Kerry Collins threw an interception, and the Redskins had great field position at our 12. The Giants defense hung tough, and they held
the Skins to a field goal.
Collins made up for things his next time out, when he combined with Toomer to keep the drive going on a 3rd and 4. Toomer made a great catch on the pass and stayed in bounds. That was matched
by a nice 'I refuse to go down' Shockey catch on the next 3rd down and 10 that he extended to 15 yards. Collins followed that up with a sensational 35 yard touchdown pass to Toomer to tie
the score up at 10-10.
The Giants basically outplayed the Redskins in the first half, and it seemed like they only got their points off our mistakes. Jessie Armstead didn't really make a difference in this game,
although I still wish he was on our team instead of theirs.
Like I said before, the second half of the game lasted forever even though there were a number of impressive plays that were key at the times they happened like Jason Sehorn's interception,
and some good returns by Joyce, and of course that blocked Redskins field goal that Omar Stoutmire recovered in the fourth quarter."
Shockey caught 11 passes for 111 yards.
"That was the big excitement in this win for the Giants. Shockey makes so much of a show of things, that you almost forget that Toomer
had 8 catches for 95 yards, including the only touchdown catch for the Giants this game. Neither team did much on offense, but you have to say that the bad weather was a big limiting factor
here. It was cold. The field was sloppy. There was a lot of standing around with the refs making the game last forever in these poor conditions, so it's hard to judge performances.
There were some important things the Giants were trying to resolve in this game. They wanted to fix their run defense. If you go by just one game, it looks like they did. They wanted to fix
the kicking game, and it looks like they did that too."
Matt Bryant kicked four field goals.
"He did, and the Giants needed every one of his 4 field goals to win by two points. It shows just how important it all is, and how you shouldn't tamper with it. Matt
Bryant was 11-for-11 on field goals, and Fassel had a masterpiece of a kicking game going.
Then it was like he splashed acid on it the way a dissident would try and destroy the Mona Lisa. Well, it looks like the masterpiece has been restored by the very person who defaced it. Matt
Bryant's three consecutive field goals brought the Giants from a 17-10 deficit to a 19-17 win."
At least he was able to fix things.
"I make fun, but one of Fassel's many good points is that he does learn from his mistakes. He makes adjustments and I feel he'll keep growing in his head coaching position
with the Giants. He had a tough job this season working with a 7-9 team that lost so many players in the off season (Armstead comes to mind right away), and he already has them at 6-4 with
six games left to go. Since he took over the play calling they are 3-0, so it's time to pass some credit where it's deserved."
