Giants win on the road at Dallas 21-17.
They are tied for first place in the NFC East with Philadelphia.
Kerry Collins was 18-of-27 for 228 yards and 3 TDs and 1 INT.
Amani Toomer had 5 receptions for 94 yards.
Tiki Barber had 17 carries for 96 yards.
Ike Hilliard and Amani Toomer had touchdown catches.
Jeremy Shockey had one catch for 11 yards and had to leave the game.
The first catch of the season for Marcellus Rivers was a touchdown pass.

It's good to come away with a win from Dallas on the road.

"You bet. It hasn't happened that often over their recent history. Now the Giants are 3-2, and the way things turned out, they're tied for first place with the Eagles. The Giants started off this game real conservative. When they took the field for the first time on offense, they went three and out on three running plays. I was kind of wondering, but on the next drive they had a second and two and I was sure they would try a running play to get that going, but they surprised me and maybe the Cowboys too, because it was a pass play to Jeremy Shockey for 11 yards."

They tried to keep the Cowboys off balance.
"Actually, the Cowboys did a lot of that to themselves. They made some bad coaching mistakes, like going for it on fourth and two on their opening drive, and leaving the Giants in good field position on their own 43 when they failed. Then Dallas tried a fake field goal on the Giants 17 and so failed to put up an easy 3 points when that didn't work. There were a few other things, and I'm sure the Dallas press will be talking about it all, the same way they hit Fassel hard last week."

What do you think of the Cowboys chances this season?
"Well, from this one game you can see that they have Quincy Carter, a good mobile quarterback, who scrambles for some yards and completes a lot of his passes. Joey Galloway is pretty good at catching them. Emmitt Smith keeps breaking away on plays, even against our good defense. I wish he would sit down and have a nice long talk with Ron Dayne about tips and techniques. Anyway, their coaching is so-so and their defense can pressure but needs some work. It would take a bit for them to put it all together this year. "

Not all of the e-mail was favorable about your Fassel, Payton, Collins 3 Stooges remarks. "Enough said. Next time they mess up like that again, I'll compare them to more favorable characters like maybe the ones from Southpark. Let your imagination roam with the possibilities on the casting. As Gamegirl mentioned, the Stooges award goes to Dallas this week for their coaching mistakes, so the heat should be off me."

The Giants simplified the play calling as they said they would.
"Whatever works. I guess they had so few plays to call that when Jeremy Shockey was out, they were down to the just a last handful that would go to a tight end. They were so stuck, they had no choice but to throw to Dan Campell who did a nice job catching 3 for 30 yards. Then they even went to third string tight end, Marcellus Rivers, who caught one for a 17 yard touchdown.
Just think, the game plan could have included completing passes to the tight ends even before Shockey showed up on the scene. That might have been helpful the last bunch of years, but I'd better watch what I say this week or we'll soon be in Southpark."

What do you think of the Cowboys chances this season?
"I'll go with that earlier assessment, except I'll add that the Cowboys have absolutely no chance this
season. Mainly because that new surface they're playing on looks like a killer. Players were tripping on it all game long, and look at the amount of injuries that seem related to it. , The list reads for Dallas - offensive lineman Larry Allen aggravated an ankle sprain, safety Darren Woodson sprained an ankle, safety Lynn Scott sprained a toe, and special teams player Randal Williams sprained an ankle. The Giants lost tight end Jeremy Shockey to turf toe.
The Dallas players are going to be spending a lot of playing time on this surface over the season, so good luck to them, and you fantasy football players, think about it."

Anything else?
"Kerry Collins impressed me in the second quarter. The drive was stopped when he was sacked and recovered the fumbled ball around our 26 yard line. Next drive, the Cowboys were on top of him his very next pass attempt, but Collins hung in there and completed it for 18 yards to Ike Hilliard. The next play was that left side completion to Amani Toomer for a 56 yard touchdown. Collins really kept his cool today.
Also, usually it's OK, but on days like today, if you don't like the TV announcing, don't just sit there and be lulled into boring announcer sleepdom. You can always watch the screen, tune in on the radio broadcast, and get back into the game."

Notes:

Marcellus Rivers now has 4 career receptions with the Giants and 3 are touchdowns.

The Giants had lost 9 of the last 11 games at Texas Stadium.

Jeremy Shockey had one catch for 11 yards before leaving for good late in the first quarter. Shockey said he never has had a turf toe injury before.

Emmitt Smith scored his first TD of the season.

Emmitt Smith now has 16,493 total yards, leaving him 274 from breaking Walter Payton's NFL record.

The game was played on new turf at Texas Stadium, and the 'RealGrass' caused some real problems for the players.
'RealGrass is an artificial surface that has the look and feel of grass. It's one of several similar systems under consideration for Giants Stadium next season if the current grass-tray system is dumped.
