Giants lose to the expansion
team Texans 16-14.
Kerry Collins completed 18-of-41 passes for 241 yards, and 1 TD.
Tiki Barber had a long 70-yard run, and a 2-yard touchdown run.
Amani Toomer had 8 catches for 113 yards and 1 touchdown.
Kenny Holmes had 3 sacks.
Michael Strahan had 2 sacks.
The Texans beat the Giants.
"Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad. I can't believe the Giants played like this after winning three straight games. It looked like two expansion
teams were playing. In the first two minutes there were three fumbles and a sack. The Giants turned the ball over. They missed an easy field goal. They snapped the ball way high over the head
of the punter, and most important, they couldn't keep Houston's defensive guys out of Kerry Collins face."
Collins completed only 18 passes in 41 attempts.
"They were on him before the receivers hit their spot. It looked like Shockey was just turning his head when the ball was sailing by him. Somehow, we have to keep this game film out of
the hands of the Titans who we play next week. Is that possible? How do we do that?"
Texans QB David Carr was sacked 5 times.
"I know. Some of the players put up some good numbers even though they lost. Strahan had those two sacks, and Kenny Holmes had three.
Tiki had a great day. Every time he came up with a big play, I thought it would pick the Giants up, but they never seemed to come out of their sleep walk for very long.
Dallas and Washington won their games, so they moved up on the Giants. Now we'll have to see how the Eagles do in their Monday night game to see how bad this loss hurt us."
What happened to the Giants passing game?
"Clearly, all the offensive line shuffling around caught up with the Giants this game. Jason Whittle had moved from guard to center and Tam Hopkins moved in at guard because center
Chris Bober is out. The Texans defense has been very solid and they play a 3-4 which can give even an experienced offensive line a lot trouble. Aside from the Giants tendency of playing down
to the level of competition, Houston was ranked 11th in the league in defense. I'd say that Texans defensive coordinator Vince Fangio did a real good job here with his 3-4 zone blitzes against
the Giants."
Fassel's play-calling won three games straight, but wasn't able to pull this one out.
"What are you talking about? His play-calling can be blamed for this loss. With less than two minutes in the game, the Giants were down
by one and had the ball at the Houston 33 yard line. Tiki Barber had just lost 2 yards on first down, but the Giants had two timeouts left, and just needed a field goal to win. The Texans
had been on top of Collins all game. He was completing less than half of his passes, and his last drive had ended with an interception.
Tiki Barber already had a career high 146 yards. It seems to me that you keep handing off to Barber here. Maybe he breaks one for big yardage, but if he doesn't you're killing the clock so
the Texans are done after you get your field goal. Instead Fassel gave the eager Texans another shot at pressuring Kerry Collins. They did, and he had the ball in the air for the Texans to
pick off."
Are you saying that Sean Payton wouldn't have called that play?
"We'll never know. If you remember, Payton didn't want to run a pass play in the situation the Giants were in a few games ago in Arizona, but Fassel insisted, and it
was picked off and returned for a touchdown Somehow that wasn't Fassel's fault. I don't expect this one to be his fault either."
You're saying Fassel takes all the credit and no blame?
"Let's not go there. I do give Fassel credit for the past few games, but nobody's perfect. It will be interesting to see what he says about this one. Remember, when he took
over the play-calling, he's the one who said 'I'll put it on my shoulders, if you don't like it, you got the one target, shoot at it.'
What I'm getting at though is maybe two heads are better than one. Maybe Payton shouldn't be excluded from all of this. I don't know.
Somebody should have been telling Fassel to stay with the ground game. It was obvious that Collins was under the gun with every passing play."
