Dec
7 He
was a little more vague and wasn't quite as insulting, but make no mistake
about it: Ben McAdoo was whining about the referees Monday just like Odell Beckham
Jr. did the night before.
And
about that smile Beckham flashed on the Giants' sideline after Steelers receiver
Antonio Brown, a close friend of Beckham, caught a touchdown pass? McAdoo was
unwilling to criticize him.
Eli
Manning admitted Tuesday that the ugly 28-14 loss to the Steelers has forced
the Giants to refocus as a team and him to refocus as a quarterback.
Eli
Manning is aware of the stakes heading into Sunday's prime-time showdown at
MetLife Stadium with the Cowboys, viewed by many as the NFL's best team.
In
the short term, the Giants need a left tackle who can keep Manning upright
and not commit killer penalties over the final four games as they make a playoff
push. Ereck Flowers is going to be the left tackle -- McAdoo made that clear Monday
-- because he's their best option.
The
Giants managed just seven points on Sunday before a garbage-time touchdown
drive in the final minute. They had 234 yards of offense and went 4-for-14 on
third and fourth-down conversions. The problem is that the offensive struggles
have been the norm this season.
Victor
Cruz vowed on Sunday to "talk to somebody" about not being targeted
for a pass in the Giants' 24-14 loss to the Steelers. On Tuesday, he did precisely
that, talking to the most important somebody of all - coach/playcaller Ben McAdoo.
It
almost definitely will be Kerry Wynn moving into Jason Pierre-Paul's starting
spot at left defensive end Sunday night when the Giants, after hitting a detour
along the road to the playoffs, face the rival and surging Cowboys, owners of
the NFL's best record.
Dec
6 The
Giants have wasted a healthy season from Victor Cruz. The divorce of Victor
Cruz and the Giants unofficially began when GM Jerry Reese drafted Sterling Shepard
last spring.
Cruz
did not like what he saw on Sunday. He played just 26-of-60 offensive snaps
and didn't have a target in a 24-14 loss to the Steelers. Cruz was frustrated
by his lack of involvement and the overall struggles of the offense.
Sterling
Shepard got an apology when he was not targeted with a pass attempt a week
ago against the Browns. Victor Cruz just wants an explanation. That's why the
receiver said he plans to speak with coach Ben McAdoo about the way he was used
Sunday against the Steelers.
After
Antonio Brown hauled in a 22-yard circus catch touchdown over Giants cornerback
Janoris Jenkins in the first half, the FOX television cameras caught Beckham smiling,
and clapping his hands. Many found his reaction odd. But not Beckham.
If
you want to engage in any Odell Beckham Jr. bashing for the way he smiled
on the sideline in Pittsburgh or for his ripping of the officiating after the
Giants' 24-14 loss to the Steelers, take it somewhere else. Ben McAdoo is not
having any of it.
McAdoo
acknowledged he agreed with Beckham's assessment the officials missed several
calls. But rather than rip said calls publicly and call for McAulay and his crew
to be banned from calling Giants games, McAdoo vowed to follow established protocol
and submit the calls he questions to the league for explanation and review.
Eli
Manning was a mess - and this Giants disaster falls on him. Bring on the Cowboys?
Yeah, right. Manning threw two interceptions, including the critical mistake from
which the Giants could not recover. Victor Cruz shouldn't have bothered making
the trip. He was targeted the same number of times as Amani Toomer.
One
good play was all it would have taken to erase a forgettable first quarter,
one good play to bury the bizarre sequence of events that led to the Giants trailing
by a safety and a field goal, one good play to ignite an offense that has yet
to hit full speed this season. But Eli Manning, football in hand at the Steelers
9-yard line, made a bad play instead, a short pass to his right intended for Will
Tye that was picked off by Lawrence Timmons.
Ben
McAdoo gave Ereck Flowers a vote of confidence Monday after a rough performance
from the left tackle in Sunday's 24-14 loss to the Steelers. Flowers, a former
first-round pick who has had a shaky pro career, is one of several major issues
for the team's scuffling offense.
Giants
left tackle Ereck Flowers appeared to be making progress for a stretch earlier
this season. But the No. 9 pick in the 2015 draft has been on a backslide that
hit a low point in Sunday's 24-14 loss to the Steelers.
Opposing
tight ends have combined for 67 catches (on 108 targets) for 848 yards and
three touchdowns against the Giants in 12 games this season. If those tight ends
were rolled into one composite player, that man would lead all NFL tight ends
in catches and yards, and be tied for 13th in touchdowns at the position.
There
is a great divide within the Giants, but it has yet to split the team in half.
Still, how much longer can a resourceful and highly competitive defense watch
their counterparts on offense play a losing brand of football?
Sunday's
24-14 loss to the Steelers did little to dissuade Ben McAdoo from his conviction
that the Giants will make the playoffs and contend for a Super Bowl in the next
two months. That's not to say everything is checking out A-OK. Certainly not on
offense, where the Giants are ranked 30th.

(8-3) vs Steelers (6-5) Game Preview
Last
week the Pittsburgh Steelers got off to a fast start in Indianapolis. They held
a lead throughout the game, and came away with a 28-7 win over the Colts playing
without Andrew Luck.
The Giants traveled to Cleveland and also led throughout
their game. They were able to extend their win streak to six, which also continued
Cleveland's losing streak to a record 0-12, as they lost the game, 27-13.
Giants - Browns
Wrap-Up
Dec 4
Odell
Beckham Jr, 24, is most famous for a one-handed catch, but his most unique
and jaw-dropping trait is how dangerously explosive he is in space. He is as good
at turning a few yards of cushion into six points as anyone in the NFL, and if
there is anyone as good or better, it is Antonio Brown, 28 - Beckham's occasional
offseason workout partner in Florida.
Here
we are, 11 games into the season, and the Giants have yet to score 30 points
in a game. There has been no breakout, no blowout, no game in which it has all
looked easy. Thirty points doesn't sound like a lot to ask for, and yet the Giants
haven't reached that modest barometer.
It
is expected to be cold, damp and dreary in a stadium notoriously difficult
for the road team, and the Steelers can make life miserable for any defense -
with Ben Roethlisberger throwing to Antonio Brown or handing it (or throwing it)
to Le'Veon Bell. It is the best three-ring circus in the NFL. A key will be if
the surging Giants defensive line can become the dominant unit in the game.
Dec
3 Giants
face first real test, can prove themselves in game against Steelers. Welcome
to the Giants' first true proving ground. On Friday, the Giants did everything
they could to downplay the significance of this game, insisting Ben Roethlisberger
and Co. are just another team.
The
Giants and Cowboys share two common opponents in the final three games of
the regular season (Lions, Eagles) and both play another team with a winning record.
With wins over the Steelers and Cowboys, the Giants would sit just one game out
of first place and hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Dallas.
Odell
Beckham Jr. was targeted on six of quarterback Eli Manning's first eight pass
attempts in last Sunday's 27-13 win over the Browns. There certainly appeared
to be a concerted effort to get the ball to Beckham. Even though Manning missed
an open Beckham three times in the first quarter, the Giants continued to feed
their superstar.
Where
Victor Cruz once excelled as the Giants' slot receiver, it's Sterling Shepard's
job now. After missing two straight Decembers, Cruz isn't going to complain. The
Giants will carry a six-game winning streak to Pittsburgh. The playoff push feels
like it has just begun.
Why
is Giants rookie CB Eli Apple playing over Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie? Over
the past three games, Apple has played 90.4 percent of the defensive snaps. Rodgers-Cromartie
has played 49.2 percent of the defensive snaps over that same stretch.
Janoris
Jenkins, the Giants' standout cornerback, expressed a desire Thursday to spend
the entirety of Sunday's game against the Steelers going one-on-one with star
wide receiver Antonio Brown, arguably the NFL's preeminent pass catcher.
Dec
2 Giants
still waiting for offense to have breakout game. There's been no breakout,
no blowout, no game in which it has all looked easy. Thirty points doesn't sound
like a lot to ask for, and yet the Giants haven't reached that modest barometer.
Landon
Collins named NFC Defensive Player of the Month. That's in addition to the
back-to-back Player of the Week awards he received earlier in the season. In four
November games, all Giants victories, Collins had 30 tackles (23 solo), including
a sack, and three interceptions.
Dec
1 Shane
Vereen was officially designated to return from injured reserve by the Giants
on Wednesday. But while the running back has returned to practice, he does not
know just yet where things go from here.
Vereen
could return to game action as early as Sunday's contest against the Steelers
in Pittsburgh, but the Giants are expected to target the Dec. 11 home game against
the Cowboys as Vereen's first game back.
As
first-round picks in 2004, Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Philip Rivers
will forever be linked. They may even one day compare favorably with the generally
recognized best quarterback draft class of all-time from 1983: which featured
Hall of Famers John Elway, Dan Marino and Jim Kelly.
As
the minutes ticked down before the Giants made their first-round pick in the
2004 NFL Draft, Ben Roethlisberger sat at a table at Radio City Music Hall alongside
Terry Hoeppner, his coach at Miami of Ohio. Hoeppner had an inkling the Giants
would take Roethlisberger at No. 4 overall.
A
box score battle is brewing for Sunday between Odell Beckham Jr. and Antonio
Brown. The two top wideouts, who are close off the field, will be playing at Heinz
Field in a big game featuring plenty of playoff ramifications.
While
Ben McAdoo weighs the pros and cons of using Odell Beckham Jr. at punt returner,
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has no reservations about having his star wide receiver
return punts.
Giants
defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week
after his dominant performance in Sunday's 27-13 win over the Browns.
The
seven-year veteran is the first NFL player with at least three sacks and a
fumble-return touchdown of at least 40 yards in the same game since 1982.
Brad
Wing was surprised when he got the call in early September last year and was
told he'd been traded from the Steelers to the Giants in exchange for a seventh-round
pick. There was some disappointment, too, but in the end, the Giants' punter is
delighted at how things worked out.
Nov
30 Eli
Manning didn't throw any passes to Sterling Shepard on Sunday, but when he
ran into the rookie receiver in the team's facility on Tuesday he offered up something
else. An apology.
Is
the quarterback conscious of a receiver not having a catch during a game?
"Not so much," Manning said. "It can't affect your decision-making on reads
and stuff."
Peyton
Manning, quarterback Eli Manning's big brother, visited with the team Tuesday,
and offered up some tips on how to win Sunday in Pittsburgh.
The
Giants held a walkthrough practice soon after and Peyton attended, watching
from the sideline as they began preparing for Sunday's showdown with Ben Roethlisberger
and the Steelers.
MetLife
Stadium officials will face a daunting task converting from Jets to Giants
mode in Week 15, with the Jets hosting the Dolphins at night on Saturday, Dec.
17, and the Giants hosting the Lions at 1 p.m. on Dec. 18. Or not. Might Lions-Giants,
which is certain to have playoff implications, be flexed into NBC's "Sunday
Night Football" to replace the Steelers-Bengals matchup?
Kate
Mara's ex-boyfriend dented the Giants' Super Bowl trophy. The Hollywood starlet,
appearing on Tuesday night's episode of "Conan," related the time her
former boyfriend fumbled the Lombardi Trophy at her family home and put a boot's
worth of damage into the heralded hardware.
Nov
29 The
Giants can only play the teams placed in front of them, and they deserve immense
credit for capitalizing. But facts are facts: The combined record of the six teams
the Giants have defeated during their current run is 20-45-1. The Giants' last
three opponents, the Bengals, Bears and Browns, are a combined 5-28-1.
The
Giants understand a steep upgrade is awaiting them in Pittsburgh and they
hope what happened in Cleveland stays in Cleveland. Their last five games are
against teams with a combined record of 34-19-1. All five - the Steelers, Cowboys,
Lions, Eagles and Redskins - are in playoff contention.
This
year already feels much different from recent seasons, when the Giants were
playing out the schedule, either virtually or mathematically eliminated from contention.
Their win on Sunday over the Browns, while far from convincing, secured for them
their first non-losing season since 2012. Now they have to finish it off.
Ben
McAdoo won't say if Odell Beckham Jr. will be Giants punt returner this Sunday
vs. Steelers. Ben McAdoo's best reason for potentially keeping Odell Beckham Jr.
as his punt returner Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers is that Beckham catches
the ball in the first place.
Exactly
how much should they be using their best player - and, after Sunday's demonstration,
undoubtedly their best punt returner - in the sometimes dangerous job of fielding
and running back punts?
Ben
McAdoo is not Tom Coughlin. He's not always five minutes early, even if he
kept the clocks that way when he took the head coaching reins in January, and
he is not cranky after his Giants (8-3) delivered a stinker for most of Sunday's
27-13 win over the winless Browns, as Coughlin no doubt would have been.
Giants
must fix stunningly predictable offense for stretch run. Play-calling and
game-planning stand out as obvious reasons for the offensive struggles. The Giants
have become exceedingly predictable, using the same personnel grouping on a staggering
percentage of their plays.
Ben
McAdoo said it was "unfortunate" rookie receiver Sterling Shepard
was not targeted one time against the Browns. Shepard was held without a catch
for the first time this season. He was targeted 11 times last week against the
Bears and caught 5 passes for 50 yards and a touchdown.
Janoris
Jenkins and Eli Apple are established as the Giants' top two cornerbacks.
Jenkins has started every game this season, while Apple has started the past five
games. After that duo, the cornerback rotation changes weekly.

(7-3) vs Browns (0-11) Game Preview
Last week the Cleveland Browns were down 14-0 at halftime. The Browns managed
to score 9 points in the second half, but with the Steelers adding 10 more, they
ended up with a 24-9 loss.
The Giants were down 16-9 at halftime to the Chicago
Bears. Their defense clamped down and held the Bears scoreless for the second
half. Meanwhile the Giants added 13 points to secure a 22-16 win.
Nov
27 A
Giants loss against the dismal Browns would be catastrophic. The Giants haven't
made the playoffs since 2011. So what? The Browns haven't been to the postseason
since 2002. They have won more than five games in a single season only once in
the past nine campaigns, including this thus-far winless campaign.
Giants
worried about a humiliation that'll happen to someone. The Browns are 0-11
but most likely will not finish 0-16, considering going winless in a 16-game schedule
only has happened once in NFL history, the 2008 Lions.
Last
Monday marked the 12th anniversary of Eli Manning's first NFL start, a further
reminder of just how fortunate the Giants have been that Manning has started each
and every game since then - 204 in all, including playoffs.Since Manning made
that first start against the Falcons on Nov. 21, 2004, at Giants Stadium, the
Browns have had 22 different starting quarterbacks.
Nov
26 The
last time Terrelle Pryor faced the Giants was in 2013 when he completed 11
of 16 passes for 122 yards and ran for a touchdown as the starting quarterback
of the Raiders. This game will be vastly different. Pryor, a record-setting passer
at Ohio State whose NFL career as a quarterback never quite panned out, is now
the top wide receiver for the Browns.
Odell
Beckham was targeted a season-low seven times in Sunday's win over the Bears,
and on Friday, Giants offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan defended the team's
use of the explosive wide receiver. Sullivan said even when Beckham isn't putting
up his typically gaudy numbers, he's making an impact.
It
was bad enough that defensive end Olivier Vernon was assessed a dubious penalty
in last Sunday's 22-16 win over the Bears. The NFL added insult to injury by hitting
Vernon with an $18,231 fine, according to a source. The fine amount is the minimum
for a roughing the passer penalty.
Jason
Pierre-Paul listed as questionable, but Giants DE says he'll 'be out there'
against Browns. Pierre-Paul pledged earlier this month that while injuries might
affect his practice time, they would not keep him out of games.
Justin
Pugh, Brett Jones and Marshall Newhouse were declared out Friday. Adam Gettis,
who saw a little action after Jones hurt a calf filling in for Pugh against Cincinnati
Nov. 14 and after Newhouse sprained a knee filling in against Chicago last Sunday,
is questionable due to calf soreness. But Gettis said, "I'm fine. I'm ready
to go."
Nov 25
After
playing the Browns on Sunday, the Giants' final five games are all against
playoff contenders, including the Lions at home, and Eagles and Redskins on the
road. They can wrap things up in a hurry, or they can lose ground in a hurry.
Victories
by two first-place teams in the NFC on Thursday helped give the Giants some
breathing room in their quest to earn their first playoff spot since 2011. Losses
by Minnesota and Washington, the two teams that currently trail the Giants in
the wild card standings, created some separation.
How
unlikely is it that Will Tye has become the starting tight end for a 7-3 Giants
team that is looking to make its first playoff run since 2011? Oh, about as unlikely
as Tye making it onto the roster in the first place.
Rashad
Jennings caught the third-and-12 pass for a gain of 10 yards in the second
quarter of Sunday's game against the Bears and started trotting to the sideline
when he looked up and saw something he was not expecting. Coaches and players
were waving him back toward the field.
NFC
East News
Cowboys
prove they are team to beat in NFC, which means Giants are in trouble.
Nov
24 Ben
McAdoo will bring his players in for practice on Thanksgiving, but he'll bring
them in earlier than usual and get them out quicker to spend time with family.
The coach said he will "get the chance to spend some time with the family, I guess,
in the afternoon."
He's
called "Snacks" for a reason. Thanksgiving at the Harrison household
sounds like a feast not to be missed. Harrison said fellow defensive linemen Jason
Pierre-Paul, Olivier Vernon and Jonathan Hankins will be there as well.
Odell
Beckham Jr. isn't satisfied - even during Giant win. Ben McAdoo said Wednesday
that he couldn't identify the source of Odell Beckham Jr.'s latest sideline eruption
in Sunday's 22-16 win over the Chicago Bears.
Odell
Beckham Jr. has no desire to be standing on the sidelines late in the fourth
quarter Sunday in Cleveland wracked with anxiety watching the Giants' defense
close the show and save the day. "It's about time for us to put one away,"
Beckham said.
Landon
Collins came into this season with a goal of being the Defensive Player of
the Year. Now even that audacious objective is starting to seem almost trite.
No defensive player has won it for 30 years.
After
missing two games because of a knee injury, left guard Justin Pugh returned
to practice on Wednesday at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. He was able
to move around and will be evaluated as the week progresses.
Nov
23 Manning
and the Giants go into Sunday's game in Cleveland at 7-3 with a five-game
winning streak and under tremendous pressure to avoid the humiliation of being
the first team to lose to the Browns, who are 0-11.
The
Browns will literally be the worst team the Giants have faced in their nearly
92 full seasons of existence. Never before has Big Blue squared off against a
squad that has gone so long into a season without a win.
When
Giants backup quarterback Ryan Nassib started watching the cutups of the Browns
defense on Monday night as part of his preparations this week, it took him longer
than usual. That's because of a familiar face playing for Cleveland. Nassib's
younger brother, Carl, is a rookie defensive end for the team.
Eli
Manning will be like millions of other Americans on Thursday: At some point
in the afternoon he'll eat a big meal and then sit back to watch Dallas play Washington.
"I'll definitely check it out," he said of the matchup between two of
his NFC East rivals.
If
Washington were to win the game and the Giants were to win their next two
games - at Cleveland and at Pittsburgh - then Big Blue would play Dallas at home
on Sunday Night Football in Week 14 for the division lead. That, obviously, is
the situation the Giants are hoping for.
The
Giants fell into their old, predictable habits in Sunday's 22-16 win over
the Bears. After showing some creativity in two wins after their bye week, the
Giants went back to basics in an offensive struggle against the lowly Bears.
From
the moment they first shared a table for breakfast inside the cafeteria at
the Giants' facility this spring, Sterling Shepard made sure his bond with Eli
Manning would be a strong one.
Nov
22 Special
Report - Once upon a time, a guy who was the head coach of the Giants (no,
not Ben McAdoo; and no, not Tom Coughlin) explained that every action in a game
is the result of several incidents. In other words, an interception is not the
quarterback's fault entirely, nor is a fumble the direct result of the ball carrier.
A quarterback might be expecting a receiver to turn to his right and he turned
to his left. A running back might have the ball jolted from his arms by a helmet
worn by a defender who appeared "out of nowhere." An offensive lineman
might miss a pass-rushing defender and get the quarterback sacked, but someone
else should have been there to pick him up.
Ben
McAdoo isn't pleased with everything the Giants have put forth during their
five-game winning streak, or even in Sunday's win over the Bears. Some might say
the same about McAdoo's play-calling and decision-making in the fourth quarter
on Sunday as well, but the head coach defended his thinking in both cases.
Ben
McAdoo has had plenty of success early in his coaching tenure and has his
team poised to make the postseason. Just don't tell him that. "We haven't
accomplished anything yet," McAdoo said.
He's
right, of course. The Giants still are in second place in the NFC East, still
have to face all three division opponents and still have to play four of their
final six games on the road.
The
Giants are in playoff contention and Eli Manning wants his teammates to soak
it in. While Ben McAdoo stressed Monday that the Giants haven't reached their
goals, Manning knows that his team is in an enviable position sitting at 7-3.
The
Giants had third-and-4 at their own 27-yard line early in the third quarter
of Sunday's 22-16 win over the Bears when quarterback Eli Manning scrambled for
a first down.
Giants
wide receiver Victor Cruz doesn't get as many passes thrown his way as he
did before missing most of the 2014-15 seasons with injuries. But Cruz still has
managed to make a major impact in his limited role this season.
Victor
Cruz was among the Giants' receiving leaders on Sunday, one of four players
with at least 40 yards against the Bears. Unlike the others, though, he tallied
his 48 yards with one catch. Welcome to Cruz's new reality.
The
last time the Giants had played three straight games at home and won them
all was in 1962, when they played at Yankee Stadium. Not only were they able to
match that feat this year with victories over the Eagles, Bengals and Bears in
the past three weeks, but they now have a chance to do something that hasn't happened
since they moved into MetLife Stadium in 2010.
Giants
rookie running back Paul Perkins had been cutting into the workload of Rashad
Jennings entering Sunday's game against the Bears. But Jennings reclaimed his
standing as the Giants' lead back in the 22-16 win.
The
Browns just can't take it anymore. It took eleven straight losses, but the
Cleveland Browns' undisguised tank job and string of broken and bloodied quarterbacks
finally has caused the team's star players - what few of them remain - to crack.
Josh
McCown will be the Browns' starting pinata quarterback for Sunday's game against

Giants
(6-3) vs Bears (2-7) Game Preview
The
Chicago Bears came off their bye week to play in a road game against Tampa Bay.
The Bears were behind from the start after an interception was returned for a
touchdown. A Hail Mary pass at the end of the half had them trailing by just seven,
but they failed to score again, and they lost the game 36-10.
The Giants beat
the Bengals, 21-20, at MetLife Stadium on Monday Night Football. The game started
out with touchdown drives by each team, but then turned into a defensive dual.
The Giants win was their fourth straight to give them six wins to match their
win totals in the past two seasons
Giants
- Bengals Wrap-Up
Nov
20 The
Giants reinforced their banged-up offensive line before Sunday's game against
the Bears by promoting center/guard Shane McDermott from their practice squad.
McDermott, who was an All-ACC player at Miami, spent most of the preseason with
the Giants. He also had stints on the practice squad earlier this year and late
in the 2015 season.
The
Bears' offense is your run-of-the-mill power hitter. They're batting .222
this season, but they will hit the ball over the fence if you let them. That's
the trap the Giants must be very wary of falling into Sunday when the two teams
meet at MetLife Stadium. Because big plays have been an Achilles heel for defensive
coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's resurgent unit all year.
Tom
Collins was window-shopping in Biloxi, Mississippi, back in 2001 with his
7-year-old son Landon, when they stopped to gaze at a display of beautiful Rolex
watches. "Dad, get that one," Landon Collins said, excitedly. "That
one's nice." "Dad can't afford that," Tom Collins said with a smile.
Landon turned to face his father, and what he said next, his father couldn't believe:Ben
Nov
19 Ben
McAdoo wants Eli Manning to play aggressively. Eli Manning has thrown six
interceptions in the past four games, two of them against the Bengals on Monday
night. Ben McAdoo"s advice for him, though, is not quite what you"d
expect. "I don"t want him to be careful," McAdoo said.
In
his first season as head coach of the Giants, Ben McAdoo has proven to be
unafraid of playing young players. Big Blue is the only team in the NFL with three
rookie receivers who have caught touchdown passes (Sterling Shepard, Roger Lewis
Jr. and Jerell Adams).
After
11 seasons as the most successful kicker in Bears history, Robbie Gould was
asked to leave, unceremoniously replaced by journeyman Connor Barth on the eve
of the regular season. On Sunday at MetLife Stadium, it is possible Gould"s
performance could send his floundering former team back to Chicago with a 2-8
record.
Gould
was signed by the Giants when Josh Brown was placed on the commissioner"s
exempt list and eventually released last month. In three games he has attempted
just one field goal, a 29-yarder he made against the Rams, and is 9-for-9 on extra
points. He has adjusted well to his new city and new locker room, too.
Nov
18 The
Giants haven't had a Pro Bowl safety since Antrel Rolle in 2013. But Rolle
said he believes they have another one now in breakout star Landon Collins.
From
one safety to another, Deon Grant loves what he sees from Landon Collins,
the Giants' second-year defender who is having a breakout season with four interceptions.
Grant, who frequently visits with his former team and speaks regularly to Collins,
said he is impressed by the second-year safety's grasp of the defense.
Jason
Pierre-Paul and Victor Cruz, who were Super Bowl XLVI champions and teammates
in their second NFL seasons of 2011, suddenly feel like the old guys on the Giants,
where rookies like receiver Sterling Shepard don't even get their pop culture
references.
Jason
Pierre-Paul isn't jumping on Odell Beckham Jr.'s Super Bowl bandwagon just
yet. Big Blue hasn't made the playoffs once since winning the Super Bowl in February
2012, Pierre-Paul said his excitable teammate was getting ahead of himself with
that kind of talk.
When
it comes to determining whether Jason Pierre-Paul has been a major factor
for the Giants' defense, he passes the eye test. The 27-year-old defensive end
has just 1 ½ sacks this season, but he is nevertheless disrupting offenses and
drawing plenty of attention from opposing coaches.
Nov
17 Nobody
is a bigger fan of the Bears this week than Ben McAdoo. He's a die-hard. And
like all rabid supporters of specific teams, he'll take issue with anyone who
disagrees with him. He has to in order to convince his real team - the Giants
- not to overlook the Bears.
Listening
to Giants coach Ben McAdoo speak on Wednesday, you would have thought the
'85 Bears were coming to MetLife Stadium on Sunday. As the Giants prepare to host
the 2016 Bears and their 2-7 record, McAdoo isn't just guarding against a letdown.
He's expressing genuine concern about a team that is 0-5 and has been outscored
by 71 points on the road.
Apparently,
no one told Pernell McPhee his team is 2-7. While the Giants spent Wednesday
trying in vain to spin that the Bears are a decent opponent, the Chicago linebacker
went right ahead and provided some bulletin board material for Big Blue.
Chicago,
which is 2-7, qualifies as a crappy team. Jay Cutler usually holds a competition
to see whether his sacks outnumber his interceptions. And the last time Bears
coach John Fox came into MetLife Stadium, his Broncos lost 43-8 in Super Bowl
XLVIII to the Seahawks.
Next
up on the Giants' schedule: complacency. That's always the next opponent for
winning teams. The Giants may not know that, because so few of them have ever
been part of a successful NFL season. Only six players were even around the last
time the Giants (6-3) were three games over .500. Just 10 of them have ever won
more than six games in a season with the Giants.
Eli
Manning can't keep going from scoring drives of 6-for-6 passing for 59 yards
and a touchdown, as he started Monday night's 21-20 win over the Bengals, to an
ill-advised interception into triple coverage to his team's fifth receiver with
the game on the line in the fourth quarter.
The
Giants have Eli Apple, and through some ups and down - heck, he was benched
for poor play against the Eagles - the rookie is now a starting cornerback, coming
off a nice comeback performance in the victory over the Bengals.
Roger
Lewis Jr., the undrafted rookie who had a terrible game on Monday night against
the Bengals with a dropped pass, a poor route, and a slip on the end of an interception.
And it seems that McAdoo is intent on proving once again that he does not have
the proverbial doghouse that many coaches around the league keep for their error-prone
youngsters..
Nov 16
The
Giants' route to the Super Bowl is coming into focus. Bully the Bad News Bears
and the Bad News Browns these next two weeks to send a message to the rampaging
Cowboys that you will see them again Dec. 11 in front of an apoplectic fan base
starving for a playoff team.
The
Eli Manning play you didn't see that saved the Giants. There is no number
or stat, though, to illustrate what Manning did in the closing minutes of the
21-20 victory over the Bengals to clinch the game for the Giants. Manning was
all set to call the play as sent in from McAdoo, but alertly noticed a shift in
the Cincinnati defense.
Even
if Giants didn't score, Ben McAdoo was right to go for it on 4th-and-goal,
and the math backs him up. Plenty of statistical analysis on fourth down decisions
shows that coaches ought to be more aggressive in their choices.
Monday
night's call to go for the winning touchdown on fourth-and-goal at the 3 certainly
helped cement that idea. But McAdoo didn't simply roll the dice in that situation.
He said on Tuesday that he had reasons for his decision.
Steve
Spagnuolo's 2016 unit might be one of the best defenses in the NFL. It is
certainly the most improved, and possibly on its way to becoming the class of
the league by the time February rolls around. On Monday, they bailed out Manning
after both of his interceptions.
Let's
not mistake this year's Giants defense with the '85 Bears, the '86 Giants,
the 2000 Ravens, or even the 2007 Giants. It's simply too soon to elevate this
group with any of those great defenses, or put them on a level with Pete Carroll's
Seahawks, who are as good as it gets on that side of the ball in today's NFL.
Cornerback
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie had his lowest snap total of the season in Monday's
21-20 win over the Bengals. Rodgers-Cromartie logged just 14 defensive snaps on
Monday, playing exclusively in four-cornerback dime packages.
Cornerback
Janoris Jenkins spent much of Monday's 21-20 win over the Bengals matched
up against A.J. Green. Green finished with seven catches for 68 yards and a touchdown
on Monday night. But Green had just four catches on seven targets for 23 yards
when covered by Jenkins.

The
Bengals are coming off a bye week. The previous game before that the Bengals played
the Washington Redskins in London, and ended up going into overtime to finish
with a 27-27 tie.
The Giants got off to a fast start on Sunday against the
Eagles. Two interceptions turned into Giants touchdowns, and they managed to keep
the lead throughout the game to finish with a 28-23 win.

14 The
Giants probably don't want cornerback Leon Hall covering A.J. Green tonight,
but when it came to preparing for the NFL's leader in receptions entering Week
10 (59), it was Hall to whom they turned. Hall played with the Bengals for eight
seasons, the last four as a teammate of Green's covering him in practices and
watching his tendencies. So what has Hall been able to share? Mostly bad news.
The
NFC is up in the air. The conference's top team, the Dallas Cowboys, has been
impressive but is not unbeatable. The Giants know - they beat the 'Boys in Week
1. The door is open for someone in the NFC to slip into the playoffs, get hot
and challenge - and possibly beat - the AFC representative, very likely the mighty
Patriots. Stop me if this scenario sounds familiar. What, Giants fans, too soon?
The
Giants enter Monday night's game against the Bengals, their ninth game of
the season, with no fullback and little blocking from their tight ends, their
best offensive lineman on the shelf for a few weeks and a murky running back situation
-- with all eight of their remaining games outdoors, in the Northeast and Midwest.
Some have cracked open the Big Blue Book of Bedtime Stories and noted the 2011
Super Bowl team finished that season dead last in rushing offense.

13 Does
anyone really think the Giants are very good? Raise your hand if you believe
the Giants' 5-3 start is a precursor to their first playoff appearance since the
2011 season, when they won their last Super Bowl. The math - and common sense
- says the Giants should be 8-3 by the end of Thanksgiving weekend.
It's
all about math and numbers. The Giants are 5-3, and have won three straight.
Beat the Bengals, and the Giants would become favored to move to 8-3 over the
next two weeks, with a home game against the Bears and a road trip to face the
Browns.
Brett
Jones held up fine in his first extended NFL playing time, the Giants won
28-23 and, with Pugh sidelined for about a month, Jones is about to receive his
first front-line action. And his first NFL start will be a doozy: a MNF test against
the Bengals and a tough customer in Geno Atkins.
The
top offensive lineman in the Canadian Football League first walked into the
Giants' locker room last spring to embark on an NFL career. Let's just say his
teammates were less than impressed. It's hard to look unimposing at 6-2 and 312
pounds, but Jones pulls it off.

Ben
McAdoo decided that size matters after watching the Giants' offensive line
struggle to run-block for the first seven games. McAdoo inserted offensive lineman
Marshall Newhouse as an extra blocker in Sunday's 28-23 win over the Eagles.
The
Giants coaching staff reviewed the first seven games during the team's bye
and decided to make some playing time changes. Donnell saw the most drastic role
reduction in Sunday's 28-23 win over the Eagles. After starting all six games
he appeared in before the bye, Donnell didn't play an offensive snap against Philadelphia.
Victor
Cruz chalked up his reduced snaps last Sunday to coach Ben McAdoo "taking
care of me a little bit." Cruz said McAdoo told him before the Giants' win
over the Eagles that the Giants would be "moving some guys around and just
making sure that everybody's fresh and using all of our tools."
Janoris
Jenkins said he shadowed A.J. Green last season while still in St. Louis.
Green had six catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns in Cincinnati's 31-7 win
over the Rams. Jenkins said one of the touchdowns was his fault in a blown coverage,
the other not on him.
Jenkins
also knows that he's well capable of getting the best of the ever-dangerous
Green. He's matched up on Green before, and his most vivid memories of taking
on the Bengals star involve him dominating the matchup.
The
Giants know they are going to need a team effort to stop Bengals tight end
Tyler Eifert. Some, or perhaps most, of the responsibility will fall to linebacker
Keenan Robinson, who will be tasked with covering the 6-6, 250-pound behemoth
while the Giants also try to deal with wide receiver A.J. Green and a two-headed
running game featuring Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard."

Jenkins wants to cover Bengals' A.J. Green The Giants cornerback figures to

a rivalry that goes back to when they were just hearing about each other in high
school.
Rookie
RB Paul Perkins is trying to make a name for himself. The fifth-round rookie
out of UCLA is offering the first hints that he may at least be a part of the
solution to one of the Giants' most vexing problems.
Roger
Lewis has made the most of limited opportunities in his rookie season. Two
of the Giants wide receiver's catches have gone for touchdowns, including a 30-yarder
in Sunday's 28-23 win over the Eagles.
If
anyone knows what rookie cornerback Eli Apple is going through right now,
it's Landon Collins. With Apple coming off one of his worst games - he was benched
in the third quarter of last Sunday's 28-23 win over the Eagles - it's second-year
safety Collins that has firsthand experience with rookie struggles.
Leon
Hall: 'It would suck' to be inactive vs. Bengals. Hall decided to sign with
the Giants a week into training camp rather than returning to Cincinnati in a
reduced role. A 2007 first-round draft pick, Hall spent his first nine seasons
with the Bengals.
Justin
Pugh is expected to miss 2-4 weeks with a sprained MCL in his right knee.
But the good news for Pugh and the Giants is that the fourth-year player didn't
suffer any further damage.
Nov
10 The
Giants' dished out for a $200 million upgrade on defense this offseason, but
their biggest breakout star actually was already on their roster. Landon Collins
has easily been the most pleasant surprise for the Giants in 2016.
Landon
Collins won his second consecutive NFC Defensive Player of the Week award,
and as important as his play has been to the Giants, his teaching skills also
have been vital.
This
comeback for Victor Cruz has not been spectacular but it has been exactly
what the Giants need. He might miss Monday night's game against the Bengals, he
might not. It does appear, though, that as the Giants turn into the second half
of their season, the brain trust hopes to get more out of Cruz by using him less.
Darian
Thompson's rookie season is over. The Giants safety will undergo surgery to
repair a foot injury that has sidelined him since Week 2 and was placed on injured
reserve. Thompson, a third-round pick from Boise State, won the starting safety
job in training camp but a shoulder injury kept him out of the lineup in the opener
(though he played extensively) and he started just one game in Week 2 against
the Saints. He played 88 defensive snaps in the two games.
The
Giants' locker room was a strange place to be on Wednesday afternoon, with
President-elect Donald Trump an obvious topic of sometimes-awkward conversation
sprinkled in between questions about football and an upcoming Monday night clash
with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Nov
9 Victor
Cruz said his ankle injury is "not bad" and that there is a chance
he can play on Monday night against the Bengals.
Cruz
"tweaked" his ankle when Philadelphia cornerback Leodis McKelvin landed on
it while making the tackle from behind.
The
pain was surging through Bobby Hart's right knee and suddenly, it was as if
the MetLife Stadium crowd in excess of 80,000 had fallen silent. Hart got up from
a pile following a running play and, as he began to hop around on one leg in the
general direction of the Giants' sideline, all he heard was the familiar voice
of his quarterback. And Eli Manning's plea - "Bobby, you gotta stay!"
- resonated.
Through
eight games, the defense and its coordinator have not forced the rest of the
league to stand up and take notice. Halfway through the season, the Giants are
doing nothing exceptionally well on defense. There are a few things they do exceedingly
poor. Yet they are 5-3 and the winning record is primarily the handiwork of a
unit that has been at its best when needed most.
Nov
8 Giants
left guard Justin Pugh suffered a knee sprain in Sunday's victory over the
Eagles and "will miss some time," according to head coach Ben McAdoo.
The
Giants are right in the thick of the playoff race at midseason, but they will
have to try to stay there without their best offensive lineman for a spell.
Despite
a 4-3 start to the season, coach Ben McAdoo recognized the need to shake things
up during the bye week. McAdoo took action by inserting some young players into
the lineup in the place of struggling veterans in Sunday's 28-23 win over the
Eagles.
If
we told you the answers at mid-season were Roger Lewis Jr., Paul Perkins,
Bobby Hart, Will Tye and Jerell Adams, the question most likely would have gone
something like this: Are the Giants so bad that they are already in look-ahead-to-next-year
mode? Quite the opposite.
It
took the entire roster for the Giants to come away with a 28-23 victory over
the Eagles in Week 9. With the win, Big Blue is now 5-3 and stands in second place
in the NFC East at the midway point of the schedule.
Trevin
Wade found it fitting that he, a backup in his fifth NFL season, would be
defending the final pass in a 28-23 Giants win over the Eagles at MetLife Stadium
on Sunday. Coach Ben McAdoo put trust in a lot of previously seldom-used players
coming out of the bye week.
Roger
Lewis Jr. came back from the bye last week and heard a message from his coaches.
"It's time to go." He didn't know exactly what that meant at the time.
Now he does. Now everyone does.
Rookies
Roger Lewis, Jr., Paul Perkins and Jerell Adams saw their roles expand, and
another first-year player, free agent Andrew Adams, continued to produce as the
starting free safety. It's midseason, but the Giants have kicked off their youth
movement.
A
healthy Keenan Robinson makes a Giant difference on special teams against
Eagles. Robinson was credited with 10 defensive tackles, the most he's had in
a single game for the Giants. But it was his special teams takedown on speedy
Darren Sproles that likely saved the win.
Former

Antrel

Giants.

(4-3) vs Eagles (4-3) Game Preview
The Eagles were not able to close
the gap with the Cowboys last Sunday night. It was a matchup of two quarterback
rookie starters trying to lead their team to victory. Carson Wentz was selected
by the Eagles as the number 2 overall pick in the draft, and Dak Prescott was
a fourth-round selection. Prescott's team came out ahead, as the Cowboys beat
the Eagles 29-23.
The Giants are coming off a bye week after winning their
game in London 17-10 over the Rams. It was a good time for a break, as the Giants
were able to size up their next opponent and reflect on all the things that need
fixing. They didn't tip their hand too much this week about what changes could
be expected, so we'll have to wait and see.
Giants
- Rams Wrap-Up
Nov
6 When
it comes to Odell Beckham Jr., the Eagles know they are facing a receiver
with a temper that's as explosive as his legs. He's got a reputation around the
league as a guy with thin skin and after a string of incidents over the last two
years in which Beckham's blown his stack, the Eagles likely know they can get
in his head. But they won't admit that.
Victor
Cruz knows it's still in him. The Giants receiver's comeback from knee and
calf injuries, which had kept him out of the game since October 2014 before his
return this season, has been impressive enough. And Cruz will never forget that
game-winning touchdown reception against the Cowboys in his first game back. But
he knows there is more.
The
Giants and Eagles will meet on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. The game will give
one team a leg up in the NFC playoff race as the season reaches the midpoint.
Here are five things the Giants must do to beat the Eagles.
Nov
5 The
Giants can't run the ball, Shane Vereen already is sidelined long-term, and
now Bobby Rainey is questionable for Sunday's game with a calf injury. It might
just be time for Ben McAdoo and the Big Blue offense to punch through the emergency
glass and pull out rookie Paul Perkins, or as his offensive coordinator refers
to him, The Big Sombrero.
Odell
Beckham's favorite rookie running back can save Giants' run game. Giants fans
are hungering to see The Kid, and Odell Beckham Jr. is whetting their appetites.
"He's going to be special," Beckham told The Post. "I know that
for sure. I've seen it."
The
sack numbers aren't good heading into Sunday's game against Philadelphia at
MetLife Stadium. The Giants are last in the NFC and second to last in the NFL
with nine. Three came in their last game, a 17-10 decision over Los Angeles in
London before the bye.
When
the lack of sacks are brought up the Giants have been largely dismissive.
The key, they say, is in pressuring the quarterback, getting the passer off his
mark. Sacks are great, but a quarterback can be impacted without getting a sack,
they have argued.
Nov
4 Special
Report - The last time the Giants swept their two-game series with the Philadelphia
Eagles was in the 2007 season - when they went on to win Super Bowl 42. Even four
years later, when they once again beat the New England Patriots and Bill Belichick,
they did no better than to split with the Eagles during the regular season.
Currently, they have lost four in a row, five of six and Sunday they'll try to
uphold their favored status (by a skimpy 2½ points, or roughly one cheesesteak)
in a game with significant importance to both teams, currently tied at 4-3 for
second in the NFC East behind Jerry Jones and his Cowboys.
The
Eagles executed a massive about-face Thursday, releasing Josh Huff a day after
coach Doug Pederson said the troubled wide receiver would play Sunday against
the Giants.
A
franchise known for stability and star power under Andy Reid and even Chip
Kelly is now mostly anonymous thanks to an ugly front-office power battle and
three consecutive offseason roster overhauls.
They've
been the definition of mediocre, a team with a 50-46 record over the past
six years with zero playoff appearances and, as a result, a third different coaching
staff this season. And the Giants can't beat them.
Eli
Apple acknowledges it can be awkward balancing his life as a Giants rookie
cornerback with his mother's outspoken, sometimes controversial remarks as an
ESPN commentator and SI.com columnist. It was never more awkward than yesterday.
Eli
Apple said Thursday that his mom's accusation that the Giants were "leaning"
on her son to control her criticism in late October is "definitely false"
and probably "just an assumption."
Nov
3 The
Meadowlands have been on fire at multiple junctures of this still-young, but
nonetheless trying Giants season so far. But first-year head coach Ben McAdoo
says he took his job expecting it to be that way.
It's
difficult to predict how a coordinator will transition from coaching one side
of the ball to the coaching the entire team, but so far, it appears he's growing
nicely into the job and he could stick around for a while, especially if he can
figure out why his offense, his strength, has been a dud.
The
bye week worked wonders for Odell Beckham Jr. The Giants wide receiver said
Wednesday that he's feeling "somewhere around 85, 90%" healthy after undergoing
considerable treatment on his injured hip during the team's time off.
Beckham
has been a second-half monster so far in the NFL. While his numbers have been
strong for the Giants in their first through eighth games each year (an average
of 6.0 catches and 85.8 receiving yards in those 18 games), he traditionally explodes
into another realm in games nine through 16 (7.9 catches, 122.1 yards per game
in 15 of those).
Nov
2 Ben
McAdoo has been careful not to single out the tight ends when asked to identify
the problems with an offense that ranks 26th in the NFL in scoring.
Through
seven games, it appears that the answer to the Giants' tight end woes is not
on the roster. The injured reserve list is another story. The Giants placed tight
end Will Johnson on injured reserve on Sept. 3, the day the roster had to be cut
to 53 players.
The
Giants have some glittery names on offense, from Odell Beckham Jr. to Eli
Manning to Victor Cruz. Yet their remade defense is probably the better Big Blue
unit so far, thanks in part to strong play by an emerging secondary star and the
man they call "Jackrabbit."
For
most of the last week and a half, all anybody has wanted to talk to Landon
Collins about is the pick. Collins, 22, doesn't want to be known for only one
play, especially not one so early in his career. That happened to a teammate when
Odell Beckham Jr. made his iconic one-handed catch against the Cowboys as a rookie.
It's all anyone wants to know about. It defines someone.
Should
the Giants have made a bold move and traded for Joe Thomas? The NFL trading
deadline came and went Tuesday and the fact the Giants did not pull the lever
on a deal is no surprise. Before acquiring linebacker Jon Beason on Oct. 4, 2013,
the Giants had gone 27 years without making an in-season trade - though it was
a biggie, getting Ottis Anderson from the Cardinals on Oct. 8, 1986.
Former
Giants
Damontre
Moore gets another NFL chance. The controversial former Giants defensive end
is signing with Seahawks. The Seahawks, who need pass rushing help, are the fourth
team to employ Moore in the past 11 months.
Nov
1 Giants'
Jerry Reese shows no accountability in his cowardly refusal to address Josh
Brown. The sad part? Handling this one wasn't all that complicated. Mara issued
a statement last week that the Giants were "misguided" in their decision to stick
with the embattled kicker.
Reese
had been given the opportunity to comment on Brown by several reporters, including
the Daily News, on Aug. 20 during the Giants' preseason game in Buffalo. He had
no time for it then and has none for it now.
When
it was pointed out to Reese that he was the person who re-signed Brown, making
these questions relevant, Reese bristled: "I'm not taking any questions with respect
to Josh Brown, guys. Stop asking. I'm not taking any questions (on that topic)
at all."
Unlike
Giants' Jerry Reese, Eli Manning addresses the Josh Brown situation. His attempts
to give thoughtful responses to a complicated situation out of his control stood
in stark contrast to general manager Jerry Reese's refusal to take questions about
Brown on Monday.
Giants
general manager Jerry Reese failed to secure any upgrades to the offensive
line in the offseason. Seven games into the season, Reese doesn't have any regrets.
"I think they're good enough," Reese said of the offensive linemen in his first
press conference of the season.
All
53 members of the active roster were at least limited if not full participants
in a short welcome-back workout on Monday as the team returned from the bye. For
a lot of Giants coming off injuries, Wednesday will be a better tell of where
they stand for the Eagles game.
The
Eagles will visit MetLife Stadium on Sunday to face the Giants in a pivotal
NFC East matchup. Both teams will enter with 4-3 records, but the Giants have
a slight advantage in the standings due to tiebreakers. Oddsmakers are giving
the Giants a similar edge, as they have opened as two-point favorites, according
to vegasinsider.com.
When
Giants defensive end Owa Odighizuwa found out he was being fined for his fake
photography, he did a double take. "When I first looked at it, I was thinking,
'Oh, is that $1,200, but no, it's not. It's $12,000. I was like, 'Sheesh, man,
that's crazy.'"
Oct 31
An
eye roll. That is how Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie reacted after he was reminded
what was going on around the Giants exactly one year ago.
A
little under a year ago, the Giants came out of their bye week with the whole

28 Giants
defensive end Owa Odighizuwa reportedly has been fined $12,154 for his touchdown
celebration with safety Landon Collins after Collins' 44-yard interception return
for a score in the Giants' Week 7 win over the Rams in London.
After
Victor Cruz scored his touchdown in Week 1, Odell Beckham Jr. was fined for
snapping a make-believe picture of it. Beckham also was fined $12,154. The difference,
of course, is that Beckham makes much more money than Odighizuwa, who earns roughly
$30,000 per week.
Oct
27 Giants
safety Landon Collins put forth a dominant individual performance on Sunday
in London, and his effort was acknowledged by the league office Wednesday back
on home soil.
The
second-year pro had two interceptions that directly led to 14 points, returning
one pick for a touchdown and setting up the game-winning score with the other.
Victor
Cruz missed two seasons with to back-to-back devastating injuries. His comeback
this summer was detoured by a groin injury that raised questions about whether
he would ever return to the field. But here he is now. Healthy. Productive. Vindicated?
The
New York Giants doled out more than $200 million during the offseason in an
effort to fix a league-worst defense. What did they get for their money?
Oct
26 Giants
wait until players leave for bye week to announce Josh Brown release. The
Giants made sure no players could comment on the team's decision to cut Josh Brown.
Big
Blue released Brown on Tuesday, shortly after he issued a statement in which
he claimed he's never "struck" his ex-wife Molly.
Brown
statement read in part, "It is important to share that I never struck my wife,
and never would. Abuse takes many forms, and is not a gray area."
So
how could Brown parse the word "struck" as a defense for his behavior,
when police documents show he shoved her head against a wall, pushed her into
a mirror and lay on her with his full body weight, his forearm across the back
of her neck and Molly's face pushed into the carpet.
It's
important to note that Brown apologized to the Giants and John Mara in the
statement, but not to his ex-wife Molly, who suffered through years of emotional
and physical abuse.
Last
Thursday, Mara said the Giants knew Brown had abused his ex-wife, but did
not know the extent of that abuse. The remark was met with rampant revulsion.
Mara
said last week in an interview he also was aware of an incident at the Pro
Bow during which the league had to intervene on behalf of Molly Brown during a
disagreement between her and Brown.
So
now the dust has settled, at least in NFL terms. Brown is out of a job, and
the Giants are out of excuses. The question now is simple. What next?
Oct
25 Giant's
Ben McAdoo considering 'everything' including play-calling duties during bye
week. Given the struggles to find traction on offense, McAdoo acknowledged that
he will be doing some self-scouting over the bye.
Everything,
McAdoo said, will be open for discussion, from the play-calling duties, which
he currently handles, to personnel groupings. The Giants have played most of the
year in three-receiver sets, and having weak-blocking tight ends and no true fullback
limits their options.
It
will be revealing to see just how open and honest the first-year head coach
is with himself when the subject is himself. The offense is darn near broken.
The Giants would have endured a rough six-hour flight home saddled with a loss
if not for the best defensive showing of the season.
After
Sunday's games, the Giants were 20th in yards per game and 25th in scoring
per game. Eli Manning was ranked seventh in passing yardage, but the Giants were
last in rushing yards. The Giants have run for fewer than 80 yards in each of
their last four games.
McAdoo
said that Rashad Jennings, who averaged 1.9 yards per carry against the Rams,
a tick above the 1.8 yards averaged by the team Sunday, will remain the team's
starting running back. However, rookie Paul Perkins, who averaged 3.0 yards per
carry against the Rams, could see an increase in his workload.
Despite
overwhelming evidence detailing his alleged history of domestic violence,
Josh Brown's future with the Giants continues to hang in the balance.
Coach
Ben McAdoo said Monday that the front office spent most of the first day back
from the weekend trip to London in discussions about how to handle the kicker.

(3-3) vs Rams (3-3) Game Preview
The Rams played a back and forth
game in Detroit last Sunday with the Lions. Each team scored just one touchdown
in every quarter, so it was 28-28 at the two minute warning. Detroit added a field
goal, and followed that up with an interception to end the Rams final drive, leaving
them with a 31-28 loss.
The Giants ended their three game losing streak with
a 27-23 win over Baltimore. They kept the fans in suspense, as they didn't take
the lead until the fourth quarter. The Ravens took it back at about the two minute
mark, and Eli Manning, on a fourth-and-one play, threw a 66 yard touchdown pass
to Odell Beckham Jr.
Giants
- Ravens Wrap-Up
Oct
23 No
one really knows what the 2016 Giants are made of. They snapped a three-game
losing streak with last week's victory over the Ravens and arrived in England
with the Josh Brown controversy hanging over their heads.
The
last time Eli Manning touched a football in a game, he fired a quick pass
to Odell Beckham Jr. for a 66-yard game-winning touchdown against the Ravens.
Now the trick is to keep it going a week later.
Why
did John Mara risk the damage that's been done to the Giants brand and his
own reputation by going all-in on Josh Brown? It's the unsolved mystery of the
Brown domestic violence disaster/crisis.
Oct
22 Giants
wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has been fined $24,309 by the NFL for taking
off his helmet during a touchdown celebration last Sunday against Baltimore.
The
fine was the third for Beckham already this season. The other fines were $12,154
for group demonstration and $36,000 for unnecessary roughness to total $72,463
for the season.
The
NFL placed Giants kicker Josh Brown on the commissioner's exempt list Friday
in light of documents released this week in which he admitted to physical and
emotional abuse of his wife.
Oct
21 Giants
not bringing Josh Brown on road trip. Josh Brown practiced with the Giants
on Thursday, but it's possible the kicker never wears the uniform again.
A
day after police documents revealed Josh Brown admitting to abusing his wife,
Giants co-owner John Mara made a stunning admission that the Big Blue kicker had
told the team of his past abuse.
The
fact they re-signed him while knowing about his 2015 arrest as well as a confrontation
in a Hawaii hotel before the 2016 Pro Bowl makes them complicit. The Giants are
one of the most respected franchises in sports, but this is an ugly stain on that
reputation.
Annie
Apple, the mother of first-round pick and cornerback Eli, ripped John Mara
on Twitter after the team's co-owner revealed Thursday that Brown had previously
admitted to the Giants that he had abused his wife, Molly.
Giants
adding kicker Robbie Gould as Josh Brown fill-in for London game. Gould will
fly to England on his own and meet the Giants on the ground. A veteran with his
experience is eligible for a $985,000 minimum salary, which would be prorated
in this case.
Oct 20
Special
Report - Years and years ago, clearly more than your correspondent would like
to remember, coaches heading into meaningful games frequently picked up a player
who had recently been with that team in order to find out all they could about
the personnel and strategies.
In the case of the Giants, who play the Los Angeles
Rams Sunday in London, there are two such players on the roster - cornerback Janoris
Jenkins, who has been on fire the past several weeks, and newly-signed Coty Sensabaugh,
who spent the summer, preseason and the start of the season with the Rams after
being signed as an Unrestricted Free Agent from Tennessee.
Jeff
Fisher vows Rams won't play dirty vs. Odell Beckham, Giants. History, and
reputation, indicate the Rams will not play by the Marquess of Queensbury rules
against Odell Beckham Jr. and the Giants in London.
The
Rams will certainly bait Beckham with cheap hits this weekend and try to throw
him off his game as they did two years ago in St. Louis.Beckham is so volatile
that no matter how hard he might try, if he's getting hit after the whistle or
hit out of bounds by the Rams, he's liable to explode. So, are the Rams a dirty
team?
Come this weekend
when the Rams meet the Giants in London, Fisher said the Rams are going to behave.
Things came to a head that year (2014)when Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree shoved
Beckham on the Giants sideline, perhaps in response to Beckham's earlier and overdone
touchdown celebration . A brawl soon erupted resulting in now former Giants Damontre
Moore and Preston Parker, both of whom came to Beckham's aide, being ejected.
Oct 19 The
Giants have followed a similar cycle this season: Wide receiver Odell Beckham
Jr. creates waves with his antics on Sunday, quarterback Eli Manning voices his
displeasure during his radio appearance on Monday and then everything is smoothed
out by Tuesday.
So
now Eli Manning doesn't mind Odell Beckham Jr.'s antics one bit, and he has
no problem with his mercurial wide receiver's new fiancee. Now, Eli Manning isn't
"sick" of anything about Beckham, even if just a day earlier on the radio he'd
finally sounded at his wits' end.
On
Tuesday, Manning took a seven-step drop away from the idea that he was piling
on his star receiver. "I'm not tired of it," he said of Beckham's sideshow.
"I thought y'all might get tired of it. That was my comment. They took the
'you' and thought it was me, but I was talking about you." See? It's a pronoun
problem, not a locker room issue.
When
Eli Manning found Roger Lewis for a second-quarter TD, it was the 300th touchdown
pass of Manning's career. It was also the first touchdown for Lewis, a rookie
receiver and undrafted free agent. Lewis kept the ball and plans to ask Manning
to sign it. And Manning is fine with that. Manning has the football from his first
career TD pass, a scoring strike to former Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey. "I
have that ball," he said. "I have my first. Jeremy Shockey."
The
last time the Giants played in London was in 2007. If that year doesn't ring
a bell, you're not a true Giants fan. That's the year the Giants won their first
Super Bowl under Tom Coughlin.
When
the Giants went to London in 2007 they landed after an overnight flight and
went straight to the practice field. "It was not good," Manning said
of that bleary-eyed workout.
When
Coty Sensabaugh was released from the Rams earlier this month, he and his
family had many concerns. One of them was his wife's airline ticket for the Rams'
upcoming game in London which seemed as if it would have to be returned. But then
the cornerback signed with the Giants. Suddenly that airline ticket came in handy.
A
woman who claims that she was injured when a large, framed team photo fell
on her in a stadium gift shop as she browsed for souvenirs has sued the Giants.
Unfortunately this is the first time that the Giants have been sued for memorabilia
incidents.
Oct 18
Ben
McAdoo apparently is not a fan of Odell Beckham Jr.'s infatuation with the
Giants' kicking net. Asked for further comment on Beckham's antics, McAdoo said,
"We, as a team, need to focus on the ballgame." Enough said.
Eli
Manning is telling Odell Beckham Jr. to grow up. Again. Manning delivered more
blunt real talk Monday during his weekly radio audience with WFAN's Mike Francesa.
"I think with the win, you can ignore it a little bit easier. Let the coach handle
it. Obviously, we've got to be careful about getting penalties late in the game,
and putting our defense in a bind right there."
Annoying. That is the
gist of the Odell Beckham Jr. sideshow, according to Louis Riddick, a former NFL
player, coach and front-office member. "He very much has a streak, to me,
in him that is me-driven. He likes to be the center of attention no matter how
much he says he doesn't want to be."
Things
could get heated between Odell Beckham and Rams in London. This is a volatile
mix of Beckham's explosive personality and the dirtiest team in the league. Things
could get so ugly passports might be revoked. The reputations of Beckham and the
Rams have only taken further hits since they last met.
The
Giants will be low-maintenance on the practice facility front, since they
are practicing here in New Jersey until Thursday before flying to London Thursday
night and doing a walk-through at Syon Park not far from Twickenham on Friday.
The Rams flew straight to London from their loss in Detroit on Sunday rather than
returning to Los Angeles first.
The
Giants want to know what Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie did wrong when he was
flagged for a critical pass-interference penalty late in Sunday's win over the
Ravens. Teams usually ask the NFL for clarification of questionable calls.
The
best they can hope for is a memo from the NFL stating what the Giants believe
they already know: The pass interference penalty on Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 27-23 victory over the Ravens was bogus and
should not have been called.

Giants
(2-3) vs Ravens (3-2) Game Preview
The Ravens lost for the second
time in a row playing last Sunday against the Redskins. The Ravens scored an opening
drive touchdown, but all they were able to add to that for the rest of the game
was a field goal. Even with a strong defensive effort, they ended up with a 16-10
loss.
The Giants were able to get two interceptions off Aaron Rodgers, but
it wasn't enough. After winning their first two games, they fell to the Packers
23-16, to take their third loss in a row.
Giants
- Green Bay Wrap-Up
Oct
16 Giants
quarterback Eli Manning made his first career start in Week 11 of the 2004
season. He has started every game since, a streak that will reach 200 straight
games, including the playoffs, on Sunday when the Giants host the Ravens at MetLife
Stadium.
Eli
Manning needs more time and more help. While the quarterback has been off
target recently, some of the blame can be pointed at the offensive line, which
struggled mightily in last week's loss. The Giants surrendered 4 sacks, 6 quarterback
hits and 5 tackles for loss in the game.
Manning's
play in recent weeks has been alarming enough to raise the possibility that
he is in decline at age 35, and that the Giants might have to address the possibility
of planning for life after Eli much sooner than expected.
Manning's
off-and-on play is not a sign that age is slowing him down. On the contrary,
Manning, 35, has never been more himself. That could either assure or worry Giants
fans, depending on how they look at it. The number one sign of a deteriorating
QB body would be less zip on Manning's fastball.
Oct
15 When
the Giants' offensive tackles struggled mightily in Sunday's 23-16 loss to
the Packers, fans started to call for backup Will Beatty to get a shot. Beatty
is ready to answer the call - if he gets it from head coach Ben McAdoo.
Eli
Manning needs more time and more help. While the quarterback has been off
target recently, some of the blame can be pointed at the offensive line, which
struggled mightily in last week's loss to the Packers. The Giants surrendered
four sacks, six quarterback hits and five tackles for loss in the game.
The
Giants paid $85 million for a joke of a pass rush. Five games into the season,
the Giants are still waiting on a return on their lavish investment. In fact,
through five games, the Giants are dead last in the NFL with four sacks - and
two have come from the secondary, one by safety Landon Collins and the other by
cornerback Leon Hall.
The
numbers don't exactly make sense. Olivier Vernon and Jason Pierre-Paul have
just one sack each this season, but both players are among the NFL's leaders in
quarterback pressures. Vernon and Pierre-Paul have made a significant impact in
the run defense, which is often overlooked when it comes to setting the edge and
completing that effort along the defensive front.
Oct
14 Ravens
cornerback Jimmy Smith fired a salvo toward Odell Beckham Jr. on Wednesday,
warning the tempestuous pass catcher through the media that if Beckham takes any
cheap shots or has any emotional outbursts, there will be problems.
But
if Beckham's reaction was any indication, Victor Cruz doesn't think his temperamental
teammate will fall prey to the goading from opponents that has tripped him up
in recent games.
Now
is the time for the Giants to bounce back as an easy stretch of the schedule
begins. Because this year, the Scheduling Gods have set the table for a Big Blue
bounceback, laying out a yellow-brick October and November.
The
Giants are eying wins over the Ravens and over the Rams in London the next
two weeks to be 4-3 at the bye. "Stick with us," Justin Pugh said. "We're
gonna get it right." Jason Pierre-Paul referenced 2011. "We went to
the Super Bowl what, 9-7?" he said. "At any given moment the season
could change."
Jason
Pierre-Paul says he will play Sunday despite a groin injury and that players
from both teams should be on the lookout for him. After a game against the Packers
in which Pierre-Paul thought "poor tackling" was the biggest culprit
for the defense, particularly on third down, the defensive end will be running
around the field with reckless abandon in an effort to fix the matter.
Representatives
from the NFL Security Department were at the Giants' facility on Thursday
to investigate the postgame altercation involving left tackle Ereck Flowers and
an ESPN reporter.
Former Giants
Lorenzo
Freeman, a Camden native who starred at the city's Woodrow Wilson High before
going on to play at the University of Pittsburgh and later for the Giants, was
found dead Monday.
Oct
13 Is
Sunday's game against the Ravens a "must-win" for the Giants? Depends
who you ask. The Giants are 2-3 and on a three-game losing streak. They have tumbled
from first place to last in the NFC East.
Dominique
Rodgers-Cromartie said there's an extra level of preparation necessary when
lining up against Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith. The 37-year-old Smith is known
as much for his production as his fiery playing style.
The
Giants and Ravens had a combined 21 players listed on their injury reports
as preparations began for Sunday's game at MetLife Stadium, with 13 of those players,
many of them big names, missing practice entirely. The Giants were without five
players who have started on their defense this season.
It's
not Eli's fault. That was the message from multiple key Giants on Wednesday,
as talk had begun to grow that the Big Blue's offensive struggles should be placed
on Eli Manning's shoulders, that at the age of 35, the two-time Super Bowl winning
quarterback is in decline.
The
Giants are sticking with Ereck Flowers at left tackle, despite his on-field
struggles and off-field controversy. in the case of Flowers, it sounds like he
is locked in at the moment heading into Sunday's home game against the Ravens.
After
playing him just about every defensive snap this season, the Giants may be
forced to replace Jason Pierre-Paul. At least to some degree.
Pierre-Paul
has played 351 of a possible 365 snaps this year, though he did sit out nine
plays in Sunday's loss to the Packers. He has one sack, a forced fumble and 24
tackles on the season.
After
missing three games with a thumb injury, Rashad Jennings said that Wednesday's
practice was "step one" in his return. It was, he said, the first time
he has taken a full share of offensive reps.
Oct
12 Never
mind being included among the NFL's top five quarterbacks, right now Eli Manning
would settle for winning a game. And the common problem across the streak has
been the shortcomings of the offense, putting Manning and his 35-year-old self
in a discussion no veteran quarterback wants to be part of.
It
will be his 200th start, including postseason. He's won two Super Bowl MVPs,
been to four Pro Bowls and become the undisputed face of the Giants franchise.
And yet it seems some of those same questions that surfaced after Dec. 12, 2004,
are hovering in the air as we approach this game on Oct. 16, 2016. Is he good
enough?
Victor
Cruz was only targeted twice in the Giants' 23-16 loss, including a downfield
pass from Eli Manning early in the fourth quarter. Packers cornerback Quinten
Rollins was in position to make an interception, but Cruz turned into a defender
and knocked the ball away. Despite playing all 56 offensive snaps, Cruz finished
the game without a catch.
Dominique
Rodgers-Cromartie impresses with toughness. Rodgers-Cromartie said that he
was "beat down" after Sunday's game, but he didn't feel that he made the injury
any worse. He is optimistic that he'll be ready to play on Sunday against the
Ravens.
The
Giants added both experience and youth to their defense as they signed cornerback
Coty Sensabaugh and linebacker Deontae Skinner. Sensabaugh was a free agent who
was released by the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, while Skinner was signed off
the practice squad.
Oct
11 This
is the third year of this marriage between Eli Manning and Ben McAdoo, their
third year with Odell Beckham Jr. And the sky is no longer the limit. The sky
is falling on Giants fans. The offense looks broken. Fix it, Coach McAdoo. And
fix it now.
Will
Giants' Ben McAdoo consider giving up play call duties? They are averaging
17.8 points-per-game, which is the sixth-lowest average in the NFL. McAdoo called
the plays for the Giants the last two seasons, leading them to a pair of top-10
finishes both years.
Five
games into the season, there are two questions I didn't anticipate asking
about the Giants: --How can they be in last place in the NFC East with Kirk Cousins
(Washington) and rookies Carson Wentz (Eagles) and Dak Prescott (Cowboys) starting
at quarterback when they have a two-time Super Bowl MVP? And, -- What is wrong
with Eli Manning?
Giants
coach Ben McAdoo called the postgame behavior of left tackle Ereck Flowers
on Sunday "unacceptable." McAdoo said multiple members of the organization have
spoken to Flowers, who pushed ESPN reporter Jordan Raanan in the locker room after
the Giants' 23-16 loss to the Packers.
Flowers'
frustration likely stemmed from his poor performance at Lambeau Field. A first-round
pick in 2015, Flowers allowed two sacks, was called for a holding penalty, and
struggled to keep his man from pressuring quarterback Eli Manning.
The
question posed to Ben McAdoo was about Ereck Flowers, specifically whether
the second-year left tackle is playing well this season. The revealing part of
the answer applies to the entire Giants team. Manning focused on throwing short
or intermediate passes, but those intentions sometimes went awry because he was
sacked three times.
