lose to the Steelers 24-14. Eli Manning was 24 of 39 for 195 yards with 2
TDs and 2 INTs. Paul Perkins rushed for 38 yards on 7 carries. Rashad Jennings
rushed for 19 yards on 6 carries, and caught 6 passes for 34 yards and 1TD. Odell
Beckham Jr. caught 10 passes for 100 yards. Will Tye caught 2 passes for 22
yards. Sterling Shepard caught 4 passes for 21 yards and 1 TD. Jerell Adams
caught 1 pass for 10 yards. Roger Lewis caught 1 pass for 8 yards. Jonathan
Casillas forced a fumble. Eli
Apple recovered 1 fumble and had 1 INT. Olivier
Vernon had 2 sacks.
"The
Giants got off to a poor start. On the second possession when they were at their
own 9- yard line, Eli Manning threw a deep pass to Odell Beckham Jr. that should
have helped. Even though it was incomplete there was a penalty flag, but it was
called on Beckham instead of the defender. That backed the Giants up more, and
soon after Manning hit Beckham with what would have been a first down catch, but
there was another flag. This time it was a holding call on offensive tackle Ereck
Flowers in the end zone for a safety. That put the Steelers up 2-0 and gave them
nice field position after the free kick. They scored with a field goal right after
that. I was encouraged when Manning got his group down to the Steelers 9-yard
line, but his pass intended for Larry Donnell, was intercepted and returned 58
yards. A few plays later and the Steelers had a touchdown. They added a field
goal and the score was 14-0 at the end of the half. The Steelers looked to be
in full control of this game. In the third quarter the Giants got down to the
Pittsburgh 3 yard line, but Manning's pass to Will Tye was incomplete on a 4th-and-1.
Things went the Giants way though when Jonathan Casillas caused Steelers running
back Le'Veon Bell to fumble. Eli Apple recovered it at the Pittsburgh 17, and
two plays later Manning hit Rashad Jennings for a touchdown. Suddenly the Giants
were down by just 7 points with plenty of time left. After the kickoff, Ben
Roethlisberger had to start from his own 12 yard line, and I thought things were
shifting in the Giants favor. The defense had been playing strong, but some big
passing plays later, the Steelers scored another touchdown to make it 21-7. Apple's
interception near midfield gave me some hope, but after moving the ball down to
the Pittsburgh 35, Manning's 4th-and-13 pass was intercepted. After the Steelers
punted, Manning tried for another fourth down play at the Pittsburgh 24-yard line,
and that failed when he was sacked. The Steelers scored another field goal on
their next drive, which ran the clock under two minutes. Bobby Rainey had a nice
return on the kickoff to near midfield, and the Steelers let the Giants score
a clock killing touchdown. The onside kick didn't work and so the final score
was 24-14 in favor of the Steelers. It
was disappointing to see the Giants lose this one. I keep waiting for the offense
to show they have what it takes if they can make it to the post season, but it's
not happening and the defense can do only so much."
"Yet again the Giants struggled
on offense. There were zero points scored in the entire first half, and they even
contributed two points to the Steelers cause with a safety. Odell Beckham Jr.
was responsible for more than half of Eli Manning's passing yardage, 100 out of
195, and maybe he was gypped out of a bunch more because of a questionable call
by one of the refs. Rashad Jennings ran for only 19 yards on six carries and caught
6 passes for 36 yards. It's not so good when your second leading receiver in a
game is your running back with only 36 yards. Maybe some of Manning's passes
would have been more productive if they were instead thrown to Victor Cruz. As
it was, Cruz saw none come his way, and for the second week in a row one of the
Giants top three receivers was shut out in the game. Last week it was Sterling
Shepard and actually they didn't get much from him today. Aside from Shepard's
1-yard touchdown catch, he totaled just 20 yards on his other three. Paul Perkins
and Jennings rushed for 57 yards, and Manning had two interceptions to go with
his two touchdowns. Ben McAdoo has to figure out his game plan and what's going
wrong, as both the running and passing game are failing. The defense had a
few mishaps, and were caught off guard after Manning's first interception. The
Steelers had good field position and struck fast on three plays with Ben Roethlisberger
hitting Antonio Brown for a touchdown to go up 11-0 in the second quarter. Other
than that, they gave up two field goals so it was 14-0 at the end of the half.
They mostly kept wide receiver Brown in check, but paid the price as Le'Veon Bell
ran all over them for over a hundred yards. Bell also caught six passes for 64
yards, and tight end Ladarius Green was Roethlisberger's main target for 110 yards
and 1 touchdown. Olivier Vernon had 2 sacks, and rookie Eli Apple had a fumble
recovery and a nice interception at midfield.
It was troubling to see Jason Pierre-Paul leave the game in the second quarter
with an injury. Next up the Giants face the Cowboys at MetLife Stadium, and it's
that time in the season to show if you have what it takes to go the rest of the
way or not."
