Game
Notes: "It was perfect weather
for a football game and I couldn't remember when the Giants were up 14-0 right
at the start. The defense gifted Eli Manning the ball twice, from the Eagles 30
and 31 yard lines as a result of back to back interceptions. Nothing comes easy
in division games though, and the lead was cut to four points early in the second
quarter. Eli Manning didn't waste any time on the drive following that one, this
time starting at the Giants 14 yard line. The big play of the drive was Victor
Cruz's 46 yard catch. Odell Beckham
Jr. was in the endzone a few plays later from the Eagles one yard line on a short
pass from Manning to put the Giants up 21-10. That was the score at the end of
the half thanks to Jason Pierre-Paul blocking a field goal a few drives later.
The defense was really clicking in the first half with those two interceptions,
and twice they had stopped the Eagles in field goal range on a fourth down with
less than one or two yards. At the start of the third quarter we found out
that Cruz had suffered a sprained ankle and wouldn't be back. It seems he has
his worst luck playing against the Eagles, if you remember that injury from two
years ago. Left guard Justin Pugh was also hurt on a play, and he was out for
the rest of the game too. Hopefully they'll be back next week. So even though
the Giants were ahead in this game, they were down two important offensive players.
The Eagles got the ball first and quarterback Carson Wentz wasted no time moving
his team down the field for a touchdown to make it a 21-17 game. The Giants,
now down two starters, responded with their own touchdown, a 32-yard pass from
Manning to wide receiver Sterling Shepard, to increase their margin to 28-17.
The quarter ended with that score, but the Eagles were down to the Giants 36 yard
line. The defense held them at the 8 yard line, and this time they didn't go for
it on a 4th and 3 and settled for a field goal and a 28-20 score. The Giants
got to about midfield when Manning hit Beckham with a pass that was considered
to be an interception although it looked like Beckham had the ball going to the
ground. The review said that it was a loose ball and didn't touch the ground.
Nobody near me agreed with that, but the Eagles got the ball at their own 40 yard
line. The Giants defense stepped up and held them to three and out when they decided
not to go for a fourth down and two play. The Giants got the ball with poor
field position at their own 4 yard line and punted three plays later. The Eagles
were at about midfield and this time went for it on a fourth and nine. Of course
they were able to make that with a pass play that went 25 yards to Jordan Matthews.
Then with a fourth and ten from the Giants 21 yard line, they settled for a field
goal and a 28-23 score. There was less than four minutes left, and Manning
got it down to under two when the Eagles called their second time out. Things
were looking pretty good until Manning was intercepted and the ball was at the
Giants 34 yard line with 1:48 left. I figured here's where we lose this one, but
after a 17-yard pass got the ball to the Giants 17, Wentz had four straight incompletions.
So the Giants get the win and as unusual you can never relax when watching them
play, even if they start off with a two touchdown lead."
Game Notes:
"Eli Manning got a great assist from his defense with two interceptions starting
off the first quarter. With Manning starting both times with very favorable field
position, two touchdowns resulted in a 14-0 lead just a little more than five
minutes into the game. Odell Beckham Jr. had one touchdown on a 26 yard pass,
and Roger Lewis caught a 30 yarder from Manning for the other. Manning's next
big completion was a 46 yard pass to Victor Cruz early in the second quarter,
and that drive ended with another touchdown pass to Beckham, to make the score
21-10 in favor of the Giants. The Eagles closed the gap at the start of the
third quarter with a touchdown, and Manning came right back on his turn with a
32 yard completion for a touchdown to Sterling Shepard to make it 28- 17. That
gave Manning four touchdowns on the day, but it was the last time they scored.
Manning threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter as they tried to hand this
game over to the Eagles, who now had the ball at the Giants 34 yard line with
the score 28-23. Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz had thrown two opening drive
interceptions, but he remained pretty composed for a rookie quarterback after
making those mistakes. Wentz went on to make a number of nice throws in this game
for big plays, and he made another right here with a 17 yarder to Nelson Agholor.
That was as far as Wentz got though, as the Giants defense held him to four incompletions
to end the game. Overall the Giants offense still needs work. Running backs
Paul Perkins and Rashad Jennings managed just 58 yards on the ground. Beckham
can make some nice catches, but something seems off. Aside from his 26 yard and
1 yard touchdowns, he caught only two other passes totaling just 19 yards on six
more pass attempts. On one of them, Manning was credited with an interception
when it was pulled away from Beckham's hands. On defense they were pretty
solid except for cornerback Eli Apple who struggled today. Seeing
Apple mess up reminded me of Landon Collins on some plays when he was a rookie
last year, and look how things have turned out for him. Collins had one sack and
one interception. Andrew Adams had the other interception in this game. Special
teams allowed Darren Sproles a 66-yard punt return, and Dwayne
Harris let down a bit by bringing two kickoffs out of the end zone that should
have stayed. He took one to the 14 yard line, and the other to the 12, where Manning
got to just the 23 yard line before throwing an interception. That was at about
the two minute mark and the Eagles, with great field position, could come back
to win this game. The final score was 28-23 and next up for the Giants are the
visiting Bengals. They're coming off a bye week for a Monday night matchup."
