Jan 3 For the past four years, seasons Kevin Gilbride spent in a hotel while his family lived in Rhode Island, he contemplated stepping down as the Giants offensive coordinator. He was finally ready to step down.
Gilbride is gone, just before Mara and Coughlin could clash over his future. Mara roundly criticized the coordinator Monday, and many believed Coughlin would fight to keep Gilbride. The fiercely loyal coach loves stability; Gilbride, who was elevated from QB coach to coordinator in 2007, was one of six coaches who had been with the franchise since Coughlin took over.

In addition to the Super Bowl victories, Kevin Gilbride, 62, coached the Giants offense when it earned five playoff berths and won three NFC East championships. Gilbride was the quarterbacks coach in his first three seasons with the Giants and was instrumental in the rapid development of Eli Manning from a green rookie to an outstanding quarterback whose big plays were instrumental in the Giants' title runs.
Gilbride was clearly forced out in a move favored by many Giants fans and, from the way it sounded Monday, by Giants owner John Mara as well. And since head coach Tom Coughlin expressed strong support for Gilbide in the waning weeks of the team's 7-9 season and obviously didn't want to make the move, it's one that could change the dynamic between Coughlin and the organization going forward.

A source close to the situation said that former Giants assistant Mike Sullivan, recently fired as Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator along with coach Greg Schiano, is a leading candidate to replace Kevin Gilbride. The team is expected to bring Sullivan in for an interview.

After nine seasons in the NFL, Brandon Jacobs is retiring. The Giants' all-time leader in rushing touchdowns made the announcement on Thursdsay night on Twitter. "After 9 years in this whirlwind business they call the NFL, I am proud to announce that I am hanging up my cleats," he said.

Jan 2 Giants co-owner John Mara saw all the empty seats for the season-finale against the Redskins last Sunday at MetLife Stadium. He understood that the weather was bad and so was his team.

The Washington Redskins, who recently fired coach Mike Shanahan, have asked permission to interview Fewell, who has served as Giants defensive coordinator since 2010. Fewell joins a handful of candidates for the Redskins job.

David Wilson wants to return from his neck injury and be the New York Giants' starting running back again in 2014. But because it's a neck injury, no one can be sure if that's going to be possible.
Jerry Reese enters the offseason with plenty on his agenda as he tries to restructure a shaky personnel situation. But after spending a first-round pick on David Wilson in 2012, running back was not supposed to be among those questions.

Eli Manning struggled all year to find consistency from and with Hakeem Nicks and second-year man Rueben Randle, who said he thought Manning and the receivers were "not on the same page from time to time" in 2013.

Jan 1 Coaches were getting fired left and right in the NFL on Monday, so Giants fans are wondering why it should take a few days for their own team's coaching situations to sort themselves out. Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride is the name on everyone's mind, and everyone wants to know whether he'll be back or if the Giants will find someone new to guide their offense.

One of the few things the Giants are sure about as dawn breaks on 2014 is that Eli Manning is their quarterback. And one of the things that Manning is certain of is that he can and will improve.
His 151 consecutive starts is the NFL's longest active streak, now that Washington linebacker London Fletcher took his 215 straight starts into retirement. But Manning still has a comeback to make.

Antrel Rolle, 31, says he has at least four more years left where he can play at an "elite" level. It's hard to argue considering he showed no signs of slowing down this season. In fact, Rolle played a bigger role with the Giants this year than in the past. His versatility was key in defensive coordinator Perry Fewell's defense, and his responsibilities in the locker room and huddle increased.

The Giants defense was supposed to be the biggest liability heading into the season. It turned out to be the biggest strength. The Giants ended as the NFL's eighth-ranked defense, and allowed only 18.3 points per game after the horrific start.
All indications are that the Giants want to bring middle linebacker Jon Beason back next season. The Giants traded a seventh-round pick to the Carolina Panthers for Beason in early October. The move was instrumental in turning around the Giants' defense, which struggled early in the season.

Dec 31 John Mara hasn't lost faith in his people, even if he is disgusted by their overall results. "I think we have not gotten the production we wanted out of certain draft spots." He's clearly taken a hard look at some of Reese's busts from the second round (Clint Sintim, Marvin Austin) and third round (Ramses Barden, Travis Beckum) and is now questioning some of the "risks" he allowed his GM to take.
As sub-par as quarterback Eli Manning's season was, and as uncertain as head coach Tom Coughlin's contract extension remains, general manager Jerry Reese is the man who needs to have the best season of any Giant in 2014. And Reese acted like a man who knew that Monday.

Kevin Gilbride's seven-year run as Giants offensive coordinator appears to be days away from coming to an end. There are high-ranking officials in the Giants organization that believe Gilbride will be fired. "I'm not sure why it took us three years to find out Jerrel Jernigan could play. We finally put him in the game and he starts making plays," owner John Mara said.
It would be very difficult for Tom Coughlin if the team told him it wanted him back but that he had to make changes to the coaching staff. One of the people said there was "no way" Coughlin would agree to fire offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride. And that last part could be a major sticking point.
It will be the decision of Mara and co-owner Steve Tisch how to shape Coughlin's coaching staff. One name to consider as a possible replacement if Gilbride is dismissed: Mike Sullivan. The former Giants receivers and quarterbacks coach was the offensive coordinator for the Buccaneers, but Tampa Bay head coach Greg Schiano was fired Monday. Sullivan and Coughlin are close.

Brandon Jacobs and the new knee cartilage he received from a cadaver -- a 16-year-old boy who died in a car crash, he said -- wasn't quite ready to call it a career. The cartilage graft surgery done on his left knee gave Jacobs hope that the free agent may return to the Giants – and only the Giants – next season. If this is the end of the line, Jacobs finishes with 60 career touchdowns, the most in Giants history. And if this is the way it ends, he's not going to complain. This is where I was meant to end.

After five seasons with the Giants, filled with more highs than lows, Hakeem Nicks is entering free agency and it's not a given he will be back with the team. The receiver has said he wants to return, but it's not known yet if the two sides will be able to come to an agreement. "Really don't know," Nicks said, of Monday potentially being his last day in the Giants' locker room.

Defensive end Justin Tuck is ready to show his love for the Giants by following his heart instead of padding his bank account. Tuck, who is an unrestricted free agent and coming off a resurgent 11-sack season, said he'd be willing to give the Giants a "hometown discount."

David Wilson sustained a serious neck injury during an Oct. 6 game against the Eagles and hasn't seen the field since. Despite Wilson's naivete about the injury, teammates have warned Wilson that the herniated disc he's suffering from could be a serious issue. General manager Jerry Reese did not rule out surgery for Wilson, and did not rule out the injury being a career-ending one.

Giants (6-9) vs Redskins (3-12)
The Cowboys beat the Redskins last week, but they had to really earn it. It took a come from behind effort by Tony Romo in the fourth quarter to overcome a nine point deficit, and with a touchdown in the final minute they took down the Redskins 24-23.
Last Sunday the Giants came up with an unexpected victory over the heavily favored Detroit Lions. The 23-20 overtime win knocked the Lions out of contention, and it showed that the Giants will play and give it their all against any team despite records or standings.

Dec 29 It is, in coach Tom Coughlin's estimation, a "huge, incredible difference" if the Giants beat the Redskins Sunday to finish 7-9, rather than lose and bow out of 2013 with a record of 6-10.
When the Giants' season ends around 4:05 p.m. Sunday, the real work begins. Coach Tom Coughlin said he will start the evaluation of the current team "right away."

Dec 28 Fresh off season-ending knee surgery, Victor Cruz blamed part of Eli Manning's awful year on "a little bit of a disconnect" between the Giants quarterback and his receivers.
Cruz's word choice confirmed what many observers recognized watching the Giants on the field and reading the box scores each week during the regular season.

Justin Pugh has been one of the few constants for a 6-9 team that is lurching toward Sunday's season finale against the skidding Washington Redskins (3-12). He is poised to become the first Giants opening-round draft choice to start every game as a rookie since Lawrence Taylor became a fixture in 1981.

Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks has gone out of his way to avoid talking about the future. That changed today, though, when the Giants' former first-round draft pick began discussing the next few weeks of his life.
Victor Cruz thinks Nicks will be back. Since 2011, Nicks and Cruz are second in the NFL among wide receiver tandems with 6,356 combined yards. Nicks said he doesn't think he needs to tell the Giants next week that he wants to return.

The Giants, who have been shut out an NFL-high twice this season, were blanked once again Friday night in the Pro Bowl balloting. The lone Pro Bowl consideration for the Giants (6-9) was strong safety Antrel Rolle and he was merely a second alternate. Defensive end Justin Tuck, who was thought to have generated support with his four-sack performance vs. Washington in a Sunday night nationally-televised game, was left off the roster as well.

Dec 27 There is a good chance that when the NFL announces its Pro Bowl teams on Friday night, Antrel Rolle's name will be on the list, and he deserves it. But if he goes to Hawaii at the end of January for the Pro Bowl, he doesn't think he should be the only Giant going. And he's right. Because Justin Tuck deserves to make the Pro Bowl, too.

Eli Manning hasn't missed a game since becoming the Giants' full-time starting quarterback in 2004. His streak is the third-longest among QBs in NFL history. Only his brother, Peyton, with 208 consecutive games and Brett Favre with 297 have shown greater endurance among quarterbacks.

Among the Giants who may be playing their final game on Sunday at MetLife Stadium against the Redskins is veteran offensive lineman David Diehl.
Even after nine sacks, a pick and a forced fumble, nothing is guaranteed. Justin Tuck knows that Sunday could very well be his final game as a Giant.

Mathias Kiwanuka is under contract with the Giants until 2016. So, in theory, his future with the franchise should not come up in preparation for Sunday's finale against Washington. "But nothing is guaranteed after your bonus," Kiwanuka said after practice

Hakeem Nicks, who becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason, was expected to carry a lot of weight this season, especially with the increased attention to Victor Cruz. Despite almost 900 receiving yards, Nicks' impact plays have been few and far between. He has the fewest catches in his career on third downs (13) this season.

Dec 26 Justin Pugh, the Giants' rookie right tackle, cares a great deal about taking care of his body, so much so that he has assembled a team of experts to help keep him in peak condition.

The Giants made a roster move on Christmas Day when they placed rookie safety Cooper Taylor on injured reserve. Offensive lineman Eric Herman was signed off the practice squad to take his roster spot.

Dec 25 Of the games remaining in the regular season - this Sunday is the only time when all 16 games are on the same day - only three will go off with absolutely no playoff implications. Giants-Redskins is part of the unholy trio, and that eats at John Mara.

Tom Coughlin believes he learned a lot about his current group of players with the way the Giants rallied for Sunday's 23-20 overtime victory over the Lions in Detroit. They were overmatched on paper, significantly undermanned at multiple positions, yet still found a way to prevail against an opponent that was playing for its playoff life.

Don't count on Tom Coughlin going out like this. At least not if he has a say in matters. The Giants coach chose a strange venue -- a conference call with Redskins reporters on Christmas Eve -- to give his most definitive answer yet that he expects to be back in 2014.
Count former Giants defensive lineman Barry Cofield among those who feel head coachTom Coughlin should get at least one more year. "I think he deserves to stick around as long as he wants to coach," Cofield told NJ.com at the Washington Redskins practice faculty on Tuesday.
The Giants fell apart on the field this season but Coughlin never lost the locker room. There have been no leaks or dissension, and time and again, the players have blamed themselves - not their coach - for the losses.

Dec 24 For a half at least, the Giants' offense had a very different look, a vastly different feel from the unit that has spent most of the season out of sync and unable to score points.
It was hardly a masterpiece performance but the offensive line, which will undergo major changes this offseason, made plays when it had to against a highly-respected Lions defensive front.

Maybe it's a good thing the Giants won't be in the playoffs. They might not be able to field a team beyond this week. As the Giants come limping across the finish line, eight players could be injured and unable to play in the regular-season finale Sunday against the Redskins.
David Wilson, Brandon Jacobs, Da'Rel Scott, Andre Brown and Peyton Hillis all have started games at running back for the New York Giants this year. The first two are on injured reserve, the third has been released and the other two are being treated for concussions.

For long stretches, it certainly felt as if the Lions were ripe to be picked apart by Eli Manning, operating in the climate-controlled environs he adores. Then you opened your eyes and the new reality of Eli Manning revealed itself. He was just a bit out of sync. That could be the calling card for his season: "Hi, I'm Eli Manning and I was Just Off in 2013."

Giants still playing for pride, ready to battle Washington. Redskins Despite the familiarity as a divisional rival, Washington shut down Robert Griffin III two weeks ago and quarterback Kirk Cousins now runs the show.

Will Hill must know his teammates and coaches all want him to succeed. Tuck, Antrel Rolle, and Mathias Kiwanuka love the guy. There are already enough areas that need an influx of talent: running back, offensive line, and cornerback. The Giants don't need to have to look for another safety because Hill can't stay clean.

NFC East News
Cowboys - ESPN reported that a back injury suffered by Romo Sunday in the Redskins game would end his season, thus preventing him from playing in this weekend's NFC East winner-take-all finale against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Eagles - If there was not enough theater for Sunday's game between the Eagles and Cowboys to determine the NFC East title, the plot took a turn Monday when the news broke that Dallas quarterback Tony Romo would miss the remainder of the season, according to an ESPN report.
Redskins - Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins, given the chance to start three games late this season after the benching of Robert Griffin III, was unable to take a step forward Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Gamegirl - "Wow! Nobody expected the Giants to win today against the Lions. It shows you what this team is made of that they played the way they did. I felt bad for the Detroit fans at the game because I know how it feels to lose an important game at home. Both teams had their ups and downs, and Christmas came a little early for Giants fans who are still hanging in there."
Mikefan. - "It didn't make sense to me that the Lions didn't try to do something, having 23 seconds and two timeouts left at the end of the game. They were on their own 25, but why not take a shot or two for a breakout run or long pass downfield to win the game instead of committing to overtime."

NFC East News
Cowboys 24 - Redskins 23. TonyRomo recovered from a bad interception and rallied the Cowboys from a nine-point, fourth-quarter deficit Sunday, finding DeMarco Murray for a 10-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 1:08 remaining to give the Cowboys a 24-23 win over the Washington Redskins. More here.
Eagles 54 - Bears 11. Nick Foles threw two touchdown passes, LeSean McCoy ran for two scores and the Philadelphia Eagles routed the Chicago Bears. The Eagles (9-6) have to tie or beat the Cowboys (8-7) in Dallas next Sunday night to win the NFC East and complete a worst-to-first season under rookie coach Chip Kelly.

Giants (5-9) vs Lions (7-7)
On Monday night the Lions were on their way to a win when a long 61-yard field goal put Baltimore ahead 18-16 with only 38 seconds left on the clock. It gave them their fourth loss in five games as they continued to self destruct from once having the lead in the NFC North.
Last Sunday the Giants planned to come off playing a bad game against the Chargers, but instead did even worse against the Seahawks. They lost the game 23-0, and for the second time this season they failed to put points up on the scoreboard.

Dec 22 Hampered by an injury-ravaged offensive line, Eli Manning voiced only optimism as he prepared to take snaps from a third-string center in Detroit. Manning will also be without Victor Cruz, his leading receiver and the only Giants wideout this season who has had good hands and has been dependable running his routes.
But those who have been around Manning for any period of time know that the man is always searching for answers about what he can do to lift his game and help his team. He's already at work trying to find the solutions, even as the Giants' failed season winds down.

At this time of year, with a team like this, the conversation always heads in this direction: Can winning the last game or two help as a springboard into next season? The bar has been lowered, as "let's do some positive things offensively".

Prince Amukamara is preparing for his most daunting assignment of the season, knowing respect will come Sunday if he can raise his game. He is also well aware of the freakish talent Lions star receiver Calvin Johnson possesses and how he can make those covering him look silly if they don't bring their best.

Dec 21 Regardless of the dead-end circumstances - a 5-9 record and eliminated from playoff contention with two games still to play - the goal for the Giants remains the same: Play to win the game.

The team's first round draft choice this season, Justin Pugh has started every game at right tackle with a changing of the guard next to him. The Giants continue to dig deeper into their depth chart as injuries sideline an increasing number of players..

Tom Coughlin wasn't thrilled Victor Cruz needed knee surgery this week, but the Giants coach liked the timing of it. Indeed, by having the surgery now Cruz is expected to be healed by the start of the Giants' offseason program.

It was barely a month ago the Giants looked as if they might have found the perfect low-cost replacement for Hakeem Nicks - if they wanted one - in Rueben Randle. Cruz's recent season-ending knee surgery will give Randle a great opportunity in the final two games to regain the Giants' trust and reassert himself.
The second-year Rueben Randle has been much more of a factor in the end zone than Hakeem Nicks, recording a team-high six touchdowns. Randle, though, would like to have more than 37 receptions for 571 yards so far.

Another guy who might get a look is Jerrel Jernigan. He's questionable for Sunday's game against the Lions but said after limited practice Friday that he's "feeling all right." I f he can play, Jernigan, who thus far has disappointed in his three seasons with the Giants but made some strides in a seven-catch, 67-yard performance against the Seahawks last week, is an option in the slot.

Dec 20 Victor Cruz's season ended on an operating table, not on the football field. The Giants receiver underwent left knee surgery Thursday afternoon performed by renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla.

Despite facing constant double coverage, Victor Cruz this season had team-high totals of 73 catches for 998 yards, just two shy of his third consecutive 1,000-yard season. Rueben Randle will likely start in Cruz's place and offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said Jerrel Jernigan will replace Cruz as the slot receiver.

Kevin Gilbride says injuries have been a factor behind Giants' offensive struggles. Two positions in particular -- offensive line and running back -- have been hit hard this season. Those used to be points of stability for the team.

The Lions have taken self-inflicted wounds to a new level, especially late in games. They're among the league's worst in giveaways, penalties and bonehead plays, although the latter isn't an official statistic yet.

Former Giants
Kareem McKenzie's final NFL game ended with him walking off the field a two-time Super Bowl champion. McKenzie and his teammates had just won their second title in five years, with the 6'6", 327-pound 11-year veteran starting at right tackle as the Giants beat the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. The retired Super Bowl champ goes back to school to help struggling NFL peers.
Mike Sullivan to interview for Army coaching job. While Sullivan seems to be on shaky footing with the Bucs, it is a steep fall to go from an NFL coordinator's job to Army's coach. Army has had only one winning season since 1996.

Dec 19 Eli Manning has already been sacked a career-high 36 times and Victor Cruz missed practice with a concussion and knee sprain. Asked if starting guards David Diehl (knee) and James Brewer (ankle) will be available when the Giants face the Lions Sunday in Detroit, coach Tom Coughlin said, "I hope so."
Those guys were already backups to previously injured starters. That left Dallas Reynolds and Brandon Mosley taking reps on either side of Kevin Boothe, who had to slide to center several weeks ago when the Giants lost backup Jim Cordle for the season after putting projected starter David Baas on IR. Forget about time to pass the football. Can that configuration keep Manning alive?"

With Pro Bowler Victor Cruz manning the slot, it's been difficult for 2011 third-round pick Jerrel Jernigan to earn reps. In the 23-0 loss, Jernigan showcased the skills that excited the Giants when they drafted him. Quarterback Eli Manning targeted Jernigan eight times and he caught all but one pass.

Chris Snee, a four-time Pro Bowler, only played until Week 3 this season, his 10th in the NFL. His hip is fine, but a more extensive elbow surgery than anticipated has put him on a tough rehab road. After one season of helplessness, is he really ready to set himself up for the prospect of more?

Jason Pierre-Paul came off a long, arduous back surgery this offseason and did his best to make it work through lingering pain this year. Now, he has a shoulder injury.

Stadium News
The NFL has contingency plans for something that has never been done before for a Super Bowl: move the game up to Saturday or delay it to Monday if forecasts - or an actual storm - made Sunday unplayable.

Dec 18 After the offensive line's worst performance of the year on Sunday, Giants captain Justin Tuck said maybe he can offer some assistance, even if that means playing scout team.

Eli Manning's getting picked apart, but 25 interceptions is not all his fault. Manning was sacked 16 times during those first six games, possibly leading to mechanical adjustments as he has worked to shield his battered body.
Eli Manning has performed like two different quarterbacks during his tenure with the Giants. Is a quarterback who has not made the playoffs in four of his five prime seasons worth investing in? Is a quarterback who has won two Super Bowl MVPs? And which one is Manning, again?

The Giants (5-9) are the only team in the NFL to be shut out this season, and Sunday represented the second time. Not only is the offensive line failing to protect Manning, but the Giants will likely be without their most consistent offensive weapon.
It is possible that Victor Cruz will be unable to play this week in Detroit (or next week against the Redskins for that matter). He's basically the only person involved in the Giants' passing game who's having any kind of consistently decent season.

Corey Webster has played in only four games this season and today the Giants conceded he won't again suit up and placed the veteran cornerback on injured reserve.

The Giants will finish in third place in the NFC East this season no matter what they do in the final two games, and playing essentially, if not mathematically, the last five weeks amid non-playoff contention is sure to prompt a significant roster shake-up.

Dec 17 Tom Coughlin declares 'a day of healing' in wake of post-game comments. For his part, Rolle said he stood by what he said following the game and doesn't need to apologize.
Coughlin backtracked from his own criticism, saying that upon review, much of the offensive ineptitude was due to lack of execution, not lack of effort.
Tom Coughlin does not appear to be among those who think Gilbride should be fired. Asked whether he still had faith in his offensive coaching staff Monday, Coughlin said, "Yes. Oh yeah."

It's been a very disappointing season for Eli Manning, a two-time Super Bowl MVP who should still be in his prime at the age of 32. His current completion percentage, 58.6, is his lowest since 2007.
Eli Manning isn't going anywhere, so something around him must change. That something must be the voices he hears on a daily basis in the workplace.

Tom Coughlin sounded Monday like a coach who will be sticking with the players who got him to this point of meaningless games with two weeks remaining in the season. "We are who we are," Coughlin said when asked about potentially benching players off the embarrassing 23-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Giants (5-8) vs Seahawks (11-2)
For only the second time this season the Seahawks were on the losing side of a score. They lost by only two points, 19-17 to San Francisco, the most recent two time division leaders, who denied Seattle from claiming that title on their turf.
Last Sunday the Giants played in San Diego, were down 24-0 at the half, and lost to the Chargers 37-14. That pretty much took them out of any chance to climb anywhere in the division or pull off some miracle comeback from their poor 0-6 start.

Dec 15 The NFC's best team faces off against one of the NFC's worst. The Giants have no chance on Sunday at MetLife Stadium when the Seattle Seahawks come for a visit. Not so fast.
The Seahawks have the look and feel of a team that could be playing Feb. 2 in Super Bowl XLVIII, on the same MetLife Stadium field where they will first face the Giants.
The Super Bowl-minded Seahawks won't just be trying MetLife Stadium on for size as they make try to stretch their Eastern time zone record to 3-0.
The Giants have one game left at MetLife Stadium after Sunday. So might the Seahawks. The eliminated Giants can only play Sunday and watch the Seahawks plan their return.

Former Giants
Lawrence Taylor has all the respect in the world for what Tom Coughlin has accomplished with Big Blue, but the NFL's greatest defensive player said it's time to sack the two-time Super Bowl winning coach.

Dec 14 Although Jason Pierre-Paul said on Thursday that he got a second opinion and surgery won't be needed to repair his right shoulder, coach Tom Coughlin didn't completely rule out the possibility of surgery.
Coughlin didn't sound optimistic the fourth-year defensive end would be cleared to play the rest of the way for 5-8 Big Blue, but he said the team hasn't made anything official to Pierre-Paul.

Many people expect a lackluster effort Sunday when the New York Giants host the Seattle Seahawks. But Giants coach Tom Coughlin likes what he's seen from his team this week, despite being eliminated from playoff contention last Sunday in San Diego.

The Seahawks have a reputation as a feisty, trash-talking team, led by cornerback Richard Sherman. So how do the Giants keep from being drawn into trouble against them Sunday? "Why'd you come to me with this question?" defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka asked Friday. Um . . . because you have three personal fouls in the past three games.

In addition to an 11-2 record and clear path to the NFC West title and top seed in the conference playoffs, the Seahawks have a rushing attack that is among the most formidable in the league. Seattle is an anomaly in today's pass-centric NFL, a team that happily and productively churns out yards on the ground.

Dec 13 Will Giants safety Antrel Rolle be a cap casualty in 2014? The Giants will have to decide which players to release, which contracts to restructure for the future. Some choices will be easy; others will be more complex.

Victor Cruz, who is 27 yards shy of his third straight 1,000-yard season but doesn't have a touchdown since September and has struggled to be as productive and explosive this year as he was in the last two. Gilbride said. "We've gotten a lot more doubles." Gilbride wasn't naming names, but everyone knows that wide receiver Hakeem Nicks and tight end Brandon Myers have been disappointments this year as receivers.

Archie Manning knew all along this would not be a Super season for his youngest son. The patriarch of the first family of NFL quarterbacks had a feeling that the Giants' expectations were set too high, especially with the injuries they began suffering in the months before the season opened.

Jason Pierre-Paul has missed the Giants' past two games due to a shoulder injury, and has not practiced yet this week. But on Thursday he scoffed at the notion of going on injured reserve. "I'm never gonna shut it down," Pierre-Paul said. "If I can go, I'm gonna go. There's no point in shutting it down. If I can still help my team win football games, that's what I'm gonna do."

The Seahawks (11-2) look every bit like a team that could represent the NFC when the Vince Lombardi trophy is at stake on Feb 2. That would mean spending the week at a New Jersey hotel, practicing at the Giants training facility, and spending quality time in the New York area before playing the big game in the Giants' home stadium.

Dec 12 Andre Brown has been cut, re-signed and placed on injured reserve enough times to understand that nothing comes easy in the NFL. That being said, entering an offseason where he feels 100 percent healthy and has racked up two 100 yard games out of the five he's played, he could have a few potential suitors on hand once he hits the market.

Andre Brown poked his head around the back corner of the Giants locker room and noticed it was gone. The Super Bowl countdown calendar (pictured above) had been removed sometime over the weekend -- after the Giants were officially eliminated from playoff contention -- putting one chapter of the season to bed.
The worst motivational ploy of the Giants' dismal season finally disappeared from its corner in the locker room on Wednesday. And it wasn't Tom Coughlin who took it down, something the coach made clear before he even knew it was gone. "I didn't put it up," said Coughlin, who had never taken to the idea of the countdown in the first place. "So I'm not taking it down."

Justin Tuck is even better than the stat sheet suggested. He had two more sacks against the Chargers, bringing his total in the past three games to seven. That's more than he had in his previous 26 games following Super Bowl XLVI. So what has changed? Ask Tuck and he'll tell you, "nothing." He's doing the same things he's always done, feels the same way he did several weeks back. it

Dec 11 With lingering issues still plaguing his knee, Brandon Jacobs was placed on injured reserve. Jacobs has been fighting swelling issues all season, especially after a breakout 106-yard performance against the Bears in Week 6.
If this is it for Jacobs, he ends with 5,087 rushing yards, the fourth-highest total in Giants history, behind Tiki Barber, Rodney Hampton and Joe Morris. Jacobs' 60 rushing touchdowns are the most in Giants history.

For nine seasons, Justin Tuck has been a fixture along the Giants' defensive line. He's been a key voice in the locker room, and a major contributor on the field. He was all these things before he erupted for six sacks in the last two games. And if the Giants are wise, they'll let him be these things again next season.

After Marshawn Lynch and the Seattle Seahawks leave MetLife Stadium on Sunday, the Giants will have faced nine of the NFL's top 10 rushers in this week's official statistics. The exception is San Francisco's Frank Gore, who is at No. 7. And next week, they are scheduled to face Detroit's Reggie Bush, who is currently 11th in the league in rushing yardage.

Antrel Rolle, in his weekly spot on WFAN radio Tuesday, said the team came out "extremely, extremely flat" and had "no fire, no intensity, no emotion whatsoever" against the Chargers. It could happen again. The Seahawks come to town with a high-powered offense led by quarterback Russell Wilson.

Dec 10 The playoffs were a pipe dream by early October, but the New York Giants somehow kept their mathematical hopes for the postseason alive until Sunday. Now that they are gone, the question becomes what the final three games on the Giants' schedule are about.
This is foreign territory to almost all of the current Giants. Not since 2004 - Coughlin's first year as coach and Eli Manning's rookie season - have they been eliminated from the playoff chase with three games remaining.
Tom Coughlin conceded that a couple of players who had been inactive might be given an opportunity in the next three weeks. But Coughlin is also old school. The 5-8 Giants can still avoid a losing season, something Coughlin has had only five times in a 19-year career as an NFL. head coach.

On The Game: Game 13

Mikefan. - "Some of the individual numbers may look good, Hakeem Nicks - 5 catches for 135 yards, Brandon Myers - touchdown catch for the third-straight game, Justin Tuck - 2 sacks and a forced fumble, but that just hides how poorly they actually played in this game."

Eagles 34 - Lions 20. Eight inches of snow fell at the Eagles-Lions game, as LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson set personal bests. More than that, there were four special teams' touchdowns - two for the Lions that counted and two for the Eagles that didn't. At 8-5, the Eagles took control of the No. 3 seed in the NFC playoff picture and will hold it for at least a day before the Cowboys play Chicago on Monday night.
Redskins 10 - Chiefs 45. Mike Shanahan's future was cast into doubt as the Redskins suffered a demoralizing, 45-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on a cold and sloppy day before the smallest announced crowd since Fed Ex Field opened in 1997. Some fans threw snowballs toward the Redskins' bench, and one was removed by stadium security personnel for screaming at Shanahan late in the game.

Giants (5-7) vs Chargers (5-7)
The Chargers took a 17-10 loss last Sunday at home against the Bengals. The ten points scored was their lowest in a game this season. It was disappointing to the fans as the Chargers were coming off an exciting 41-38 win over division rival Kansas City.
Last Sunday night the Giants got their record up to 5-7, which is not bad coming off an 0-6 start. The 24-17 win over the Redskins keeps them mathematically alive in the division race, but the rest of the teams would have to play poorly for them to have a shot.

Dec 8 Special Report - It was April 24, 2004, as the Giants' new head coach, Tom Coughlin, was preparing for his first draft. The 2003 Giants had finished with a 4-12 record, but sadly, so did three other teams. They were Oakland, San Diego and Arizona, and in cases like that the NFL awards all ties in an inverse order of the winning percentages of the teams they played. So it was decided that San Diego had compiled its 4-12 record against the worst-rated opponents, that Oakland was second, Arizona third and the Giants fourth.
This did not sit well with general manager Ernie Accorsi, who was experiencing a near-fatal attraction condition over a quarterback from the University of Mississippi named Eli Manning. "You can tell about the special ones," he said, having had previous experience with the likes of Johnny Unitas. "You can just tell when one of the special ones walks into a room," he said one spring afternoon at lunch in Manhattan. "Eli has that look, that aura." Unfortunately, the Chargers felt the same way, and their general manager, A.J. Smith, told everyone he could think of - even those who didn't ask.

For Eli Manning, Philip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger, not only did they wind up with their respective teams on that April day in 2004 but nearly 10 full years later, they're still playing for them.

The Giants have won five of their past six games and are eager to build on that, but let's face it, their momentum was pulverized with their last-second loss to the Cowboys, and it isn't coming back.

Brandon Myers has caught touchdowns in consecutive games and seems to have earned a larger role in the passing game. The fifth-year player caught five passes for 61 yards last week against Washington, his highest totals since Week 2.

Dec 7 Terrell Thomas can celebrate solid season but wonders if he'll be back. He has purchased a whopping 67 tickets for friends and family to watch him Sunday in San Diego, and admits the opportunity to finally play an NFL game in his home state, after six sometimes frustrating years, has been "a long time coming." But there will be more than a homecoming on Terrell Thomas' mind when his Giants take on the Chargers, because no matter how hard he tries, he sometimes thinks past Sunday.

While Andre Brown has performed exceptionally well in the four games he has played for the Giants since returning from a broken left fibula, the fifth-year running back expects to see even more improvement. "I still feel like I'm just scratching the surface of what my potential can be, and that comes with more playing time, more experience, more games," he said.

Defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka can't recall the last time he played every single snap of a game as he did Sunday; college, perhaps. And with Jason Pierre-Paul likely to miss his second straight game, Kiwanuka could see another marathon outing - and another chance to fill Big Blue's pass-rushing void.

First round draft choicefree Justin Pugh has started every game at right tackle. If he starts each of the final four, beginning Sunday in San Diego, he will become a) the first Giants rookie to start an entire 16-game season since defensive tackle Barry Cofield in 1995; b) the first offensive lineman to do it since David Diehl 10 years ago; and c) the first Giants' first round draft choice to do so since Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor in 1981.

Dec 6 Victor Cruz thinks this is the week for the Giants' passing game. Been a tough year. Very few big plays, lots of sacks allowed. Cruz hasn't caught a touchdown pass since September. Hakeem Nicks hasn't caught one all year. But this Sunday in San Diego, Cruz says, this is the game.

Although the Giants have won five of their last six games, the offense is taking its time getting untracked. The Giants did not score a first-quarter point in either of their last two games and have just one offensive touchdown in the opening quarter of the last six games. They will try to change that when they face the Chargers Sunday in San Diego.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has been seen numerous times this year on the field and sideline visibly upset with teammates (mostly his young receivers). He admitted he needs to improve his body language. Eli Manning has refrained from pointing fingers or public tirades. He's once again shown an incredible amount of restraint despite already being sacked a career-high 31 times with four games remaining in the season.

After an eight-game stretch during which they barely connected, Giants tight end Brandon Myers finally seems to be back on the same page as quarterback Eli Manning. Myers has caught a touchdown in the past two games, and his 100 combined receiving yards over the past two games are his most in back-to-back games since September.

Former Giants
Bill Parcells is impressed with the way Tom Coughlin has held his team together after an 0-6 start. It's reminiscent of the Jets' 1999 season under Parcells when he got off to a 1-6 start. The Jets wound up 8-8, with Parcells calling it the best coaching job of his career.

Dec 5 Eli Manning-Philip Rivers trade: 10 years later, Ernie Accorsi knows he made the right call. What if Accorsi had bent to San Diego general manager A.J. Smith's demands and included Osi Umenyiora in the deal? What if he didn't want to part with the picks and he took Ben Roethlisberger, as his draft board suggested?

Eli Manning won't say why he didn't want to play for Chargers: 'I forgot, I think' 'I just can't remember. It's been 10 years. It slipped my mind,' Manning said before the Giants were set to visit San Diego on Sunday, almost a decade after the Chargers' No. 1 pick in the 2004 Draft was traded to New York.

Philip Rivers never heard from Giants when they drafted him in 2004. Philip Rivers was a member of the Giants, for 15 minutes at least. It was an awkward 15 minutes for sure. The Giants selected Rivers fourth overall in the 2004 NFL Draft out of N.C. State. He was swiftly traded to the Chargers for Eli Manning and some draft picks.

As much as Justin Tuck would relish completing his career with a team he helped lead to two Super Bowl triumphs, he knows that only time will tell whether that feeling is reciprocal. His four-sack performance in Sunday night's 24-17 victory over the Washington Redskins was compelling, adding to a legacy of strong performances in big games through his nine years with the only professional team he has played for. His future is too uncertain for the glare of the spotlight to shine elsewhere as he completes a five-year contract worth $30 million.

Hurting Brandon Jacobs needs knee surgery, still rather be with Giants than undefeated team. When asked to play, Jacobs has enjoyed success this season. He has 58 carries for 238 yards (4.1 ypc) and four touchdowns. In his opinion, it could be even better. "I wish like hell my knee was 100 percent. I just wish it was 85 percent. I'd take 80," Jacobs said. "It would be different. It would be nasty."

Jon Beason considered the question for a handful of seconds and then, decisively and with an impact - just like the way he plays - predicted his future with the Giants. "I think they'll keep me,'' Beason told The Post on Wednesday. Seeing what Beason has done in his short time with the Giants, why in the world would they not keep him?

Will Beatty knows the numbers now. His 10 sacks surrendered this season are more than the last four combined. He has given up three in a game twice, the last time on Sunday against the Redskins in Washington. He also knows this is not the reason the Giants signed him to a five-year, $38-million contract extension in the offseason. He told our Dave Hutchinson after the Redskins game that he knows he's not living up to the expectations.

Five players who would (and are starting to) benefit from increased action this month. DaMontre Moore, Adrien Robinson, Jerrel Jernigan, Jayron Hosley, James Brewer. Big Blue on a 5-1 run after their horrific 0-6 start, and clinging to the slimmest of playoff hopes must start getting increased snaps to several youngsters. This would enable GM Jerry Reese to evaluate how much the kids can contribute in 2014 and perhaps alter his free agency attack plan.

PSE&G touts its 'green power' at Super Bowl 2014. Public Service Electric & Gas, New Jersey's largest utility and a PSEG subsidiary, will deliver power to the Feb. 2 Super Bowl at MetLife and related venues that weekend, providing enough energy at the East Rutherford complex to light about 8,000 homes.

Dec 4 Justin Tuck 'definitely' not considering retirement any time soon, will hold off on any contract talks until offseason. Defensive end Justin Tuck is having a resurgent season, quite possibly his best since his Pro Bowl campaign in 2010.

After they fell behind 14-0 and came back to beat the moribund Redskins 24-17, Justin Tuck said, "I'm pretty proud of the way we fought the last six games." Pride always is a good thing, but playoff contention is even better, and the Giants can't break into the "In the Hunt" column in even the most inclusive graphics.

They were consigned to the background by the officiating controversy, Justin Tuck's four sacks and an inspiring comeback, but quarterbacks Eli Manning and Robert Griffin III threw the ball impressively Sunday night when the Giants defeated the Washington Redskins, 24-17.

Middle linebacker Jon Beason has received much of the credit for the Giants' defensive turnaround. But Beason wasn't the only change to the Giants' starting lineup that coincides with the defensive resurgence. Safety Will Hill stripped Pierre Garcon in the final minutes to clinch the Giants' fourth victory in five games. It was the biggest play of Hill's young career.

Safety Antrel Rolle was among the many Giants who got in their shots against Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III in Sunday night's 24-17 victory at FedEx Field. But that didn't stop Rolle from expressing concern for RG3's health. Despite several warnings and a devastating knee injury, the second-year quarterback continues to take big hits.

Dec 3 The Redskins were, understandably, confused following last night's officiating mishap toward the end of the game. In a statement released by vice president of officiating Dean Blandino, their explanation was simple: The refs needed to stop the play regardless of whether or not Washington had any time outs.
The NFL said play should have been stopped to clear up confusion over what down was being played late in the Giants-Redskins game Sunday night, but Tom Coughlin said that would not have been fair to his team.

The Giants haven't been providing quarterback Eli Manning with the pass-protection he needs to be successful. The Giants will have a lot of areas to address once their season is over, a lot of problems to correct. But the biggest and most important remains their ability to protect quarterback Eli Manning.

Jason Pierre-Paul is dealing with a serious shoulder injury that kept him off the field for the majority of the Week 12 game against the Cowboys and the entirety of the Week 13 game against the Redskins. That pattern indicates that there's at least a chance that Pierre-Paul could be shut down for the final four games of the Giants' season, even though Giants coach Tom Coughlin sounds as though the team is resisting that.

Eagles 24 - Cardinals 21. The bye week could not disrupt the Eagles' momentum. Neither could the Arizona Cardinals' defense or impressive receivers. The Eagles escaped the Cardinals' visit to Lincoln Financial Field with a 24-21 victory. It was the Eagles' fourth consecutive victory, pushing their record to 7-5 and keeping them in strong playoff contention with four games remaining.

Giants (4-7) vs Redskins (3-8)
The Redskins played on Monday night and were trailing by only four points at halftime, but after that things did not improve and it turned into a 27-6 loss to San Francisco. It was the first time Washington was held without a passing or rushing touchdown since Robert Griffin III started quarterbacking in 2012. The Giants had a shot at making a spectacular comeback on the season if they could just beat the Cowboys, but they couldn't. They managed to tie up the score in the fourth quarter, but the Cowboys had the final say on the last drive of the game with their 24-21 victory.

Dec 1 Between each offensive series, Kevin Gilbride takes a moment to crouch down on the bench to start scribbling again. He marks the down and distance for each play and the looks the opposing defense is showing. Gilbride notes what has worked so far and what he wants to scrap.

At times like this, it comes down to many things, some tangible, others hidden away. And for the Giants and what motivation they may or may not have, it comes down to this: "It's definitely important, just for our own belief," Victor Cruz said. Who knows what the Giants believe about themselves right about now.

There's not much to get excited for in East Rutherford these days, not with the Giants sitting on a 4-7 record. The playoffs are the longest of longshots now. But for at least one night, for one game, motivation won't be an issue. No matter who sits out and what the record is, you don't take it easy against the NFC East rival Redskins.

The current Giants have an aging, expensive roster that was kept together for what they hoped would be one more Super Bowl run. Now that it's over, it's time to rebuild. And while Giants co-owner John Mara told the Daily News that the rebuilding likely won't be "anything drastic" the reality is it still could be extensive.

Kevin Boothe is as comfortable at left guard as he is at center, which is where the Giants' veteran offensive lineman will start in tonight's prime-time game against the Redskins at FedEx Field. "Really the only difference between the two positions," Boothe said, "I have to block with one arm instead of two when the ball is snapped."

Veteran fullback John Conner has quietly helped spark the Giants running game in recent weeks. He was especially effective last week against the Cowboys as the Giants rushed for a season-high 202 yards. Conner, a former Jet, was signed in September off the street to replace starting fullback Henry Hynoski, who was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

In a Super Bowl of many firsts, Jersey hosting 'first mass transit Super Bowl' Unlike past Super Bowls, where you could have walked from your hotel room to the stadium, it's the first "mass transit Super Bowl," relying heavily on trains and buses in the congested northern New Jersey and New York City region.

Nov 30 Hakeem Nicks said he was told by Tom Coughlin that he wasn't playing early last Sunday. Some of his teammates were, admittedly, surprised that the former first-round pick was not in the lineup. Nicks also thought he would go. He says he felt healthy enough to play. "I felt like I was, but obviously I understand where (Tom Coughlin) was coming from," Nicks said. "I didn't show him enough that week in practice."

Through 11 games, the Giants are 27th in the NFL when it comes to scoring a touchdown inside the red zone. On Sunday against Dallas, one of the more notable gaffes took place when the Giants went for a throwback pass to Brandon Myers on a first-and-goal from the Dallas 9. Or, on the following drive, when the Giants ran the ball on third-and-goal from the 10.

The news that defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and cornerbacks Trumaine McBride and Corey Webster are out for Sunday's game against the Redskins means the Giants will have to do some interesting juggling of their defensive lineup.
Pierre-Paul will miss a game for the first time in his four-year career. He has played in 59 consecutive regular-season games, which ties him with Antrel Rolle for the team's third-longest streak behind Eli Manning (146) and Zak DeOssie (107).

Nov 29 The perfect-ending dream of everyone who plays or coaches in sports is to go out on top. Almost none do. But figure on Tom Coughlin giving it at least one more go in 2014. His players not only expect that to be the case; they practically beg for it.

As the franchise braces for yet another (four of the past five years) winter without a postseason, one of the brightest lights to shine through the darkness has been Justin Pugh, and it looks as if the Giants got it right with their first-round draft pick from Syracuse, a player who figures to be a pillar on the offensive line for years to come.

Kevin Boothe has no problem adapting to ever-changing offensive line. Boothe, who was claimed off waivers by the Giants in 2007, had been a career backup at that point. He realized the more positions he could play, the more valuable he was. Since joining the Giants, he has played every position on the offensive line except left tackle.

The Giants' offensive line has been ravaged by injuries this season. Right guard Chris Snee, center David Baas and backup center Jim Cordle are out for the season. Eli Manning's already been sacked 28 times, tied for second most in his career. He hasn't gone a single game this season without being tackled for a loss.

The Giants, who travel to Washington this weekend to play the Redskins on Sunday night, aren't taking them lightly. At 4-7, the Giants can't take anyone lightly. Plus, no matter what they see on their 2013 game film, the memories of how tough Griffin, Alfred Morris and the Redskins were to stop last year are still too fresh.

NFC East News
Cowboys 31 - Raiders 24. With a win over the Raiders, Dallas moved two games above .500 for the third time in three years -- but in both previous years, the team finished with consecutive losses.

Nov 28 Say what you will about Hakeem Nicks. Speculate how badly he wants to play this season, how injured he really was when he sat out last week, or how much he's focusing on his next contract with, most likely, his next team. The fact is, the Giants are a better team when he is on the field. That was apparent in the loss to the Cowboys.

Hair one day, gone tomorrow. Missing along with the Giants' four-game winning streak is quarterback Eli Manning's beard. He had sported a beard during each of the Giants' four wins this season. But by the time Manning met with the media on Wednesday, his facial hair consisted of mere stubble. "Just looked at it and thought it was time," he said.

When the Giants took defensive end Damontre Moore with their third pick in this year's NFL draft, General Manager Jerry Reese defined Moore's worth in three words: "He is sacks." But 11 games into the season, despite the back and shoulder problems that have limited Jason Pierre-Paul's playing time, Moore has barely stepped on the field for anything other than special teams.

When Trumaine McBride was forced out against the Cowboys, the Giants moved safety Antrel Rolle into the nickel corner role he has filled before, but not this season. Rolle was picked on by Tony Romo on the fateful final drive. Rolle took responsibility for the coverage lapses, but said he hasn't practiced at nickel corner for five weeks, making his press coverage technique rusty.

The Giants have enjoyed durability and consistency at tackle this season, where Will Beatty (left side) and first-round draft choice Justin Pugh have started every game. Inside, it's been a different story. Kevin Boothe, David Baas and Jim Cordle started games at center.

It seems the Giants and Cowboys can't stop talking about each other. Victor Cruz was held to two catches for 27 yards by cornerback Orlando Scandrick on Sunday, and he wasn't happy about it. Cruz Scandrick "He always holds on every play," Cruz told reporters in New York.

Nov 27 Hakeem Nicks worked hard not to become a sideshow, avoiding all contract conversation in the offseason and paying little attention to trade speculation at the deadline. But here we are a day before Thanksgiving, and the Hakeem Nicks sideshow is all that remains.
There can be no doubt that Nicks is upset that the New York Giants made him inactive for Sunday's game, and there's even less doubt that coach Tom Coughlin is aggravated about the way his one-time star wide receiver handled things last week.

The ridiculous way the Giants can make the playoffs. This is for the eternal optimists only, or those looking for a good laugh. Sure, the Giants' playoff outlook is bleak, significantly bleaker than it was last week before suffering a crushing loss to the rival Dallas Cowboys. Here's how the Giants can still make the playoffs.

The Giants may have barely a flicker of life left in their longer-than-longshot playoff hopes, but Antrel Rolle said on WFAN that that will not keep them from playing hard over these final five games. "We're the fighting Giants," Rolle said. "We will continue to fight." Rolle added that he is "overly confident" that these Giants will play hard, despite the circumstances.

The Giants have five games remaining in a 2013 season, which will very likely produce their first losing record since 2004 when Tom Coughlin arrived and force-fed a rookie quarterback, Eli Manning, onto the field to take his lumps. There's often nothing riveting in games devoid of any realistic playoff implications, but that doesn't mean there's a lack of significance.

Jim Cordle, the Giants' starting center in seven of the last eight games, was today placed on season-ending injured reserve with an injury to his patella tendon. Cordle joins fellow offensive linemen Chris Snee and David Baas on injured reserve. His place on the roster was taken by Stephen Goodin, who has spent the entire season on the Giants' practice squad.

Nov 26 Hope is still alive, but it is beginning to fade after a last-second 24-21 loss yesterday to the Dallas Cowboys. The Giants are 4-7 and sit two games behind both Dallas and Philadelphia in the NFC East. Because they own no tiebreakers, they would have to finish with a better record than both rivals to win the division. With just five games left, they have no wiggle room.

Mistakes and misplays by the Giants were strewn throughout the 24-21 defeat at MetLife Stadium, a loss that all but ended their hopes of miraculously climbing out of an 0-6 hole to win the NFC East. They successfully emerged from a 21-6 hole to tie the game with 4:45 left, only to see the Cowboys convert three third downs en route to the winning kick.

Giants try to explain 3rd-and-goal run from the 10-yard line. There was a moment midway through the second quarter that left just about everyone scratching their heads. Even some of the Giants players.

Tom Coughlin stopped the questioner in his tracks as he suggested that the Giants' season was effectively over and wondered how the veteran coach would motivate his team for the final five games. At 4-7, the Giants know their playoff dream is dead and they'll miss the postseason for the fourth time in the past five seasons.

Jason Pierre-Paul was on the field for only 30 of a possible 68 defensive plays. The shoulder injury that has been bothering him for several weeks now was apparently a larger issue Sunday than it had been the week before.

This from Giants defensive end Justin Tuck on Twitter. A photo of Tuck's two Super Bowl rings directed at Cowboys fans who've apparently been after him on his timeline. (And no, I don't think it's any coincidence that the display "finger" in the middle is bare.)

One day after blasting officials for not blowing their whistles on the play in which Victor Cruz was stripped and the ball returned 50 yards for a touchdown, Tom Coughlin said he was wrong. Coughlin came to that conclusion after watching tape of the play.

On The Game: Game 11
Gamegirl - "When the Giants later tied it up 21-21 in the fourth quarter my hopes were high. They had to make a two point conversion to do that and had been trailing the whole game up to that point, but this doesn't seem to be the year that the Giants can work their magic."
Mikefan. - "With the limitations of the offensive line and no Hakeem Nicks, Eli Manning played like he had one arm tied behind his back. Andre Brown and Brandon Jacobs provided a real nice ground game, but without Manning connecting with his receivers, or with him being sabotaged by them, you end up with a loss like this."

Giants (4-6) vs Cowboys (5-5)
The Cowboys lost 49-17 to the Saints and then were on a bye watching as the Philadelphia Eagles took over their top spot in the NFC East with a 24-16 win over the Redskins. The Cowboys are hoping to even things up on Sunday while the 6-5 Eagles are on their bye week.
The Giants edged a bit closer with their 27-13 victory over Green Bay and stretched their win streak to four games. A win over the Cowboys would have them with the same record as the team that was leading this division just one week ago.

Nov 24 With temperatures in the low 30s - the wind-chill factor will make it feel even colder - and high winds expected to be between 25-30 mph, it would bode well for the Giants (4-6) to lean on running back Andre Brown against Dallas (5-5) this afternoon at MetLife Stadium in an NFC East showdown.

Nov 23 The thing about the season opener, even though it was a 36-31 loss, is that the New York Giants' defense didn't think it played all that badly. The defensive players wouldn't come right out and say it for fear of making the offense look bad, but two of the Cowboys' four touchdowns in that game were scored by Dallas defensive players off turnovers.

On Friday, Terrell Thomas spoke the phrase that ripples through rivalries like none other. He didn't predict effort, didn't predict intensity, didn't even merely predict blood, as Pierre-Paul has several times. He predicted a victory. "No doubt," the cornerback said on SiriusXM NFL Radio. "We're going to win this game."

How will cold weather affect the team? The Giants' game Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys in MetLife Stadium could be the first of the season to be significantly affected by the weather. Temperatures are expected to dip into the low 30s, with winds perhaps 25 miles per hour. It is in that kind of weather in which the Giants have often thrived, both at home and on the road.

The easygoing, aw-shucks Eli who has been walking around in the No. 10 Giants jersey for 10 years is learning to kick some butt and take names. It would be a stretch to now call him "Mean Eli," because he will eternally have the disposition of everybody's amiable younger brother, but when it comes to blunders and boneheaded plays by his teammates, Eli is not letting them roll off his back. Once he would jog off the field and swallow his frustration. Not so much anymore. .

Ryan Mundy lost his starting job at strong safety to Will Hill, in large part, because he was injured. At the time, he led the team in tackles, had an electric 91-yard return of an interception and had recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchback.

This is Will Hill's last chance. He understands that everything depends on it. His place with the Giants. His career in the NFL. It all stands just one transgression, just one more slip-up from ending. Forever. The Giants "definitely" made it clear that three chances are all he will get.

Stadium News
Judge rules on motions in clash between American Dream developer and Jets, Giants. But the American Dream developer continues to scrimmage with the Giants and the Jets over the NFL teams' claims that the project will interfere with their fans on game days.

Nov 22 Special Report - And now, with your permission, a diversion from the Giants and their game with the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. John F. Kennedy was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963, shot by a gunman named Lee Harvey Oswald with a mail-order Mannlicher rifle that cost him $12. It happened from a window in the Texas Book Depository on Dealey Plaza in Dallas and it stunned the nation and the world. There are still rampant conspiracy theories as to who else might have been involved, but to this date, a full 50 years later, no one has provided anything but theory and speculation.
Two days later, by order of then Commissioner Pete Rozelle, the NFL carried out its full schedule of games, and on Nov. 24, 1963, the Giants found themselves in St. Louis, where they lost. The next weekend they went to Dallas. Rozelle always thought - and said - that "the worst mistake of my career was to play that weekend's games." But he canvassed the NFL's owners before making that announcement, and he noted that JFK has been a "rabid football fan" and the games, all of them, were going to be played in his honor.

Hakeem Nicks was back at practice Thursday, though he was listed as a limited participant. Oh, and his injury changed. The Giants called it a groin injury Wednesday, then Thursday coach Tom Coughlin said, "They say it's better to explain it as an abdominal, whatever that means." Fortunately, Nicks spoke about his situation Thursday. Unfortunately, he didn't offer much more in the way of clarity. He said he definitely plans to play Sunday against the Cowboys, but there is obviously some sort of physical issue that's giving him trouble.

The weather forecast for Sunday's game against the Cowboys at MetLife Stadium is right on point for a late November game: party cloudy with a high of 32 degrees and a 22-mph wind. Even though veteran punter Steve Weatherford has kicked in the Meadowlands for the past five seasons -- two with the Jets -- he struggled two weeks ago against the Raiders in similar elements.

Tony Romo has thrown 21 touchdown passes and six interceptions in 10 games. He competed 74 percent of his passes for 263 yards with two touchdowns and an interception against the Giants in the opener. The knocks that were once there on the Cowboys' quarterback - that he can be rattled, especially late in games - appear gone. The Giants are convinced he's much harder to fluster than in previous seasons.

Nov 21 There will be no Lombardi Trophy handed out on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, the winning QB won't get to go to Disney World and there will be no parade for the victors. But to Jason Pierre-Paul and the streaking Giants, games don't get any bigger than this one on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, where Big Blue puts its roller-coaster season on the line (again) against the Dallas Cowboys.
From the time they fell to 0-6, one game at a time has been their mantra. Especially this one game now. "We beat ourself that first game," Jason Pierre-Paul said, "but that's the past. "This game right here is like a Super Bowl to us. "It ain't no playoff game, it's like a Super Bowl to us. "This is going to be a bloodbath out there. I'm sure they're going to be ready, and I know my boys will sure enough be ready to back it up."

The last time the Giants played the Cowboys, Eli Manning threw for 450 yards in the Giants' Week 1 36-31 loss, the second highest total of his career. Cruz, Hakeem Nicks and Rueben Randle all topped 100 yards receiving, the first time a trio of receivers accomplished that feat in franchise history.
By now you have heard that New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks has yet to catch a touchdown pass this year. But did you also realize that his fellow Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz hasn't caught one since Week 4 in Kansas City? "

The Giants have a history of earning the prize, something the Cowboys have not done in 17 years, since winning Super Bowl XXX -- many Roman numerals ago. Since then, the Cowboys have just two playoff victories. "Personally, I feel like this game is going to determine the outcome of the season,'' Antrel Rolle said.
The Giants have won four consecutive games, but skeptics who are unconvinced they've truly turned around their season want to see them keep the streak alive against a top-flight quarterback. After facing backups, newcomers and/or injured signal-callers, the Giants will get that opportunity Sunday when they face Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys.

Nov 20 Prince Amukamara is blossoming into all-around player. The Giants' defensive ends and linebackers are pilfering passes. Their cornerbacks are making tackles at the line of scrimmage. This is apparently what it looks like when a defense is clicking, with all 11 parts working in unison.

The Giants are on a four-game winning streak after their 0-6 start, beating up on a series of subpar quarterbacks to plow back into contention. That will not be the case this weekend. Tony Romo is far better than the quarterbacks the Giants have feasted on lately. Rolle's retort? "Well, he's going up in class as far as the defense," Rolle said.

It's Cowboys week, which means everybody's amped up, especially Jason Pierre-Paul, who is expecting... bloodshed? I mean, I'm sure there'll be cuts and bruises as there are in any NFL game, but sheesh. Still almost a whole week to go. Let's pace ourselves, shall we?

Nov 19 When Eli Manning escapes the pocket, it strikes fear into the defense. His own defense, that is. They don't want to see their star quarterback plod upfield and risk injury. They don't want to see their star quarterback take nine seconds to travel 17 yards like he did on the opening drive Sunday against the Packers. When he does, they experience a mixture of nausea and comedy. They cover their eyes and chuckle.

Eli let him have it. Yup, Eli Manning wasn't happy, and he laid into Louis Murphy Jr. on the sideline after an interception charged to Manning that clearly was Murphy's fault because he ran the wrong route. Later, when two receivers were in the same area and a third-down pass glanced off the hands of Victor Cruz, Manning showed how upset he was with a disgusted gesture for all to see. The miscommunication issues are not a good thing for the Giants, but a more demonstrative Manning is.

As the Jets and Giants head into a weekend of crucial conference games, a playoff dream that seemed so unlikely (for the Giants) and so unexpected (for the Jets) remains alive. Against the odds, the local teams are still in contention, still eyeing that magical February date on the shared home turf of MetLife Stadium.

When Jason Pierre-Paul is making plays like the game-sealing interception in Sunday's win over the Packers, he changes everything about the game and everything about the Giants' defense. And if Pierre-Paul is really 'JPP' again, his reemergence might just change everything about the NFC East race, too.

Jon Beason is humbled and energized by the accolades. He's quick to deflect the attention but deep down takes great satisfaction in it all. Since his arrival in a trade with Carolina on Oct. 4, the Giants have suddenly become a defensive juggernaut.
Jon Beason is starting to sense that Giants are on a special run. "From everybody on the outside looking in, they're saying, 'Are they really going to make this run? Are they going to hit a little bump? Or is it going to be one of those special seasons, something you've never seen done before?'"

Critics say the Giants have gotten fat on a bunch of junior varsity quarterbacks. Their four-game winning streak has come against the likes of quarterbacks named Josh Freeman, Matt Barkley, Terrelle Pryor and Scott Tolzien. On Sunday, they'll play against a top-notch quarterback in the Cowboys' Tony Romo, the naysayers point out. Let's see how they do against him.

Nobody knows how this is all going to turn out for the New York Giants, but I believe this: If this team makes this year's playoffs, there shouldn't be any more discussion about who's the best coach in the league. Look at Tom Coughlin, winner of four straight games with a team that once looked as though it would never win again.

The Giants were required to go to the team's practice facility for only a weight-lifting session, but players decided to remain to prepare for the Dallas Cowboys. On their own, they studied film and conducted meetings.

It's startling that Jerry Jones the owner has put up with Jones the GM this long. Jones gave Tony Romo a six-year, $108 million contract in March even though he's won just one playoff game in seven years as the starter. He dumped defensive coordinator Rob Ryan after last season and replaced him with Monte Kiffin, who was one of the best -- 10 years ago.

Mikefan. - "Andre Brown provided nearly all the running for the team going 66 yards on 18 carries. Brandon Jacobs ran the ball only 5 times, but he made them count. Eagles 24 - Redskins 16. For the last three weeks, the Eagles have played close to complete football. Sunday's win marked the third consecutive game that the offense has scored at least three touchdowns and the defense has allowed fewer than three touchdowns.

Giants (3-6) vs Packers (5-4)
Last Sunday the Packers played the Eagles at Lambeau field without starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The results were not good as they took their second loss in a row 27-13 and lost more players in the process.
The Giants won their game against the Raiders last Sunday 24-20. Running back Andre Brown led the attack and the defense certainly did their job. The Giants overcame a 17-14 halftime deficit and have now won three in a row.

Nov 17 This is the day, this must be the day, this better be the day for Eli Manning to air it out and throw caution and footballs to the meek wind and attack the Pack so Giants fans can give thanks for a resurrected season and possible first-place showdown next Sunday against Tony Romo and the Cowboys.

Whenever the Giants need to see how they measure up against strong competition, whenever they come to a fork in the road to the playoffs -- or in the playoffs, for that matter -- and whenever they are on the verge of establishing an identity, it always seems as if the Packers pop up.

Nov 16 Hakeem Nicks has a 12-game itch, one he is hoping to finally scratch on Sunday. None of Eli Manning's 11 touchdown passes this season have gone to Nicks, who hasn't found the end zone in nearly a year. He is intent on ending the streak against Green Bay.
For the season, the 25-year-old receiver does have 38 receptions for 570 yards, a 68-catch pace. His lack of touchdowns, however, is peculiar. The touchdown drought has come at a bad time for Nicks, months before he becomes a free agent.
Green Bay could be the right team to help Nicks get on track and finally haul in a touchdown pass. Nicks has dominated the Packers in four career games against them, hauling in 23 passes for 423 yards and six touchdowns.

It's up to the Giants to decide how to proceed the remainder of the season. When healthy, Andre Brown is clearly their best option at running back. He's more explosive than Peyton Hillis, more experienced than Michael Cox, and healthier and younger than Brandon Jacobs.

Tight end Brandon Myers didn't catch a pass against the Raiders - his former team - last week, but he may have had his best game of the season. Myers, who has built has career as a pass catcher, was a key factor as a blocker in having pave the way for running back Andre Brown, who rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries in the Giants' 24-20 victory.

Justin Pugh wasn't able to make the send-off family dinner Friday night for his older brother, who is being deployed on Tuesday. His brother, Michael Gavaghan, a career Air Force man, is a flight engineer. The centerpiece of the farewell weekend comes Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium, when Michael and three of his Air Force buddies will attend the Giants-Packers game to watch his younger brother start at right tackle for the Giants.

Nov 15 Eli Manning's forte is the play-action pass. It has been absent from the offense for the most part this season because of the lack of a consistent running game. Andre Brown may give them that consistency. If so, opponents, starting with the Packers on Sunday, may have to bring a safety into the box to help stop Brown and the Giants could return to their big-play roots.

Led by Eli Manning, the Giants offense as a whole hasn't been very productive. Only the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have scored fewer points this season, and even in their three-game winning streak, the Giants have averaged 21 points per game. So how much of the lack of production can be blamed on Manning? Is he blatantly missing wide-open receivers?

Cullen Jenkins could be Giants' fill in at defensive end for Jason Pierre-Paul. If defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is unable to play Sunday against Green Bay, the Giants appear to be turning to another position to fill some of the void.

Before Sunday, Andre Brown said any workload nearing 40 carries would result in a tombstone. But four days later, all the lingering soreness has subsided. Brown said he feels healthy enough to be a full go this week against the Packers.
Brandon Jacobs proclaimed himself fit for duty on Sunday against the Packers after returning to practice following a bout with swelling in his knee. Jacobs has been battling a bad hamstring and then a knee issue since his breakout 106-yard, two-touchdown game vs. Chicago on Oct. 10.

Nov 14 Eli Manning is 31st in the NFL right now in passer rating, 21st in touchdown passes, 30th in completion percentage and 29th in Total QBR. By no measure, including his 3-6 record, is he having anything resembling a decent season. But he does believe it's getting better.

Jason Pierre-Paul made it clear that he is back. He's just not sure if he'll be back on Sunday. After a breakout performance - or at least half of one against the Raiders on Sunday before he injured his shoulder - the defensive end sat out Wednesday's practice and said he will also sit out Thursday. As for his availability on Sunday against the Packers, he said that remains a question.

The Giants vs. Packers was supposed to be a primetime game. Then the Giants decided to start the season 0-6 and the Packers lost Aaron Rodgers. Not surprisingly, NBC dropped the matchup from their Sunday night schedule in favor of the much sexier Chiefs vs. Broncos. Giants linebacker Jon Beason still feels snubbed. He wanted to play with the world and his peers concentrating on their game.

Former Giants
Dan Connor, who was released by the Giants with an injury settlement last week, was free to sign with another team. He agreed to join the Panthers on Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

Nov 13 The Giants are rolling right along, the hottest team in the NFC East with a three-game winning streak and the possibility of pulling even at the top of the division standings by the end of the month. But something seems to be missing. Something that has always been a part of these types of successful runs. Points. Where is the offense? Where is Eli Manning?

Their last three games - all victories - have done more for the Giants than simply improve their position in the NFC East standings. They have transformed the way the players on their defense feel about themselves from week to week.
For the last three weeks, Big Blue's defense had plenty of big plays in big moments - including that goal-line stand against the Raiders that kept hopes for a third straight win alive.

Cullen Jenkins spent the first seven years of his NFL career with the Packers and won a Super Bowl with them. He spent the past two seasons with the Eagles and didn't win much of anything. Yet Jenkins said he believes he was more emotional facing the Eagles this season than he will be Sunday against the Packers..

The Giants don't just need to make up 1 1/2 games on the division-leading Cowboys and Eagles in the span of the seven weeks. They need to do so with the hardest remaining schedule of anyone in the NFC East.

Famous is normal for Eli Manning, who has a famous father (Archie) and a famous older brother (Peyton) and is famous himself. It was so normal for Eli that while growing up, he figured everyone was famous.

Joe Ruback's license plate collection started at Giants Stadium and has been growing ever since. He's up to 33 plates. They were 0-6. Regardless of how embarrassing things got, Joe Ruback promises he never contemplated leaving his personalized Giants license plates in a drawer at home and going into hiding.
NYC Police commissioner Ray Kelly said he expects the Super Bowl to be a safe event this February. The Super Bowl will take place Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., with events leading up to the game on both sides of the Hudson River.

Nov 12 Eli has to step up for the Giants to complete a miracle playoff run. The gods have done their part for the Giants, delivering four of the NFL's weakest opposing quarterbacks to them in their last three games - not coincidentally all Giants' victories. The Giants defense also has done its part, keeping the last three opponents out of the end zone, save for one touchdown allowed - on a 5-yard drive. Now it is Eli Manning's turn.

Some weeks, it's been punt returns for touchdowns. Other weeks, it's been a low net average. It just hasn't been an easy season for punter Steve Weatherford. "It's been the toughest of my career," Weatherford said Monday.
Weatherford, who is averaging 45.9 yards per punt but has a gross average of just 35 yards, said the conditions were the worst he ever faced in MetLife Stadium. He said it was difficult to make any adjustments because the wind was so unpredictable. "It was 20-plus and gusty," he said.

Yes, technically, the Giants remain alive in the NFC East race. For fans of the division's teams, this is fine. If you root for the Giants (3-6) or the Redskins (3-6) or the Eagles (5-5) or the Cowboys (5-5), and you care about nothing but your own team's results, it's great. Just get into the playoffs and anything can happen.

Giants face big decision over Nicks's future. Unquestionably, the Giants would like to keep Nicks, who was a top draft pick four years ago. But at what cost? Nicks, who will be an unrestricted free agent in the off-season, does not have a touchdown reception this season.

When Cullen Jenkins was asked Monday if playing against the Green Bay Packers has any extra significance to him he said, "No." For the first time since leaving the Packers via free agency following the 2010 season, Jenkins will play against them when the Giants host the Packers this coming Sunday at MetLife Stadium. Jenkins played for Green Bay from 2004 to 2010, winning a Super Bowl ring with them.

Eagles - Foles playing his way into being Eagles' QB of future. For the year he's now thrown 16 touchdown passes without an interception. The NFL record for most touchdown passes without an interception is 20 set earlier this year by Denver's Peyton Manning.
Redskins - For a second straight year, they are left trying to put their season back together after a 3-6 beginning. They pulled it off last season, winning seven straight games to capture the NFC East title. The six teams left on the Redskins' schedule - they play the Giants twice - have a combined record this season of 30-26 , a winning percentage of .536.

Cowboys 17 - Saints 49. This was the worst loss of Jason Garrett's three seasons as Cowboys head coach. The coach usually gets too much blame when a team loses and Garrett will certainly get his share for this one. I just don't see any way Garrett is still coaching the Cowboys next season if this team doesn't win the division.
Eagles 27 - Packers 13. It wasn't pretty, but the Eagles escaped Lambeau Field with a win over the Packers. It's difficult to say if the win was a strong one. The Packers were without Aaron Rodgers and backup Seneca Wallace left with an early groin injury, making way for Scott Tolzien, who was playing in his first NFL game.

Giants (2-6) vs Raiders (3-5)
Last Sunday the Raiders welcomed the Philadelphia Eagles to their stadium. That was a big mistake as they were trounced 49-20. Eagles quarterback Nick Foles made NFL history at their expense, becoming the first player to complete 7 passing touchdowns before the beginning of the 4th quarter.
Two weeks ago the Giants got their record up to 2-6 by defeating the Eagles in Philadelphia 15-7. Now the Giants are coming off a bye week, hoping to build on the improvements they've made during their two game win streak. They'll have to dig in fast as all the rest of the teams in their division won games while they rested.

Nov 10 Of the 818 rushing yards the Giants have allowed this year, 21.9 percent of them have come from quarterbacks. Opposing running backs average 3.3 yards per carry against the Giants this year, while opposing quarterbacks average 5.4.

Giants never blamed Eli Manning for awful start. They never wavered, never whispered behind his back when he couldn't stop throwing interceptions and could not lift them all from their mushrooming malaise, never looked at Eli Manning as anything but their once and forever franchise quarterback.

Against all odds and laws of probability and historical references, the Giants somehow have a chance starting today against the Raiders to prove they are nothing more than a bunch of overrated stiffs delusional enough to have a Super Bowl countdown clock in the locker room.

It is unwise for a head coach to stand up in front of his team and say "Look, fellas, we got to win every game from here on out, or else the season is a disaster." Coach Tom Coughlin has not issued those marching orders, but he has, firmly, made sure the Giants "are fully aware of the circumstance we've put ourselves in and the importance of the final eight games of the year."

Louis Murphy, Brandon Myers and Kevin Boothe at home with Giants after being rejected by Raiders. Louis Murphy Jr. thought he was going to be in the long-term plans of the Raiders. So what happened? "Al Davis died," he said. "And I'm here." Tight end Brandon Myers was a primary target for the Raiders last year, catching 79 passes. Kevin Boothe who, like Myers and Murphy, was drafted by the Raiders.

Former Giants
Lawrence Taylor doesn't condone what Richie Incognito did in the explosive bullying case in Miami, but he said he would never accept Jonathan Martin back in his locker room because he's disgusted Martin didn't stick up for himself and now can't be trusted.

Nov 9 Mobile quarterbacks have given the Giants fits with their legs in recent years, and on Sunday, they have to worry about the most prolific running quarterback in 2013.
Terrelle Pryor, a third-year pro with just eight career starts, is drawing comparisons to the Panthers' Cam Newton because of his size and athleticism. He's more runner than passer at this point.

It doesn't seem that long ago when Hakeem Nicks was torching secondaries, but Saturday will mark 11 months since the Giants wideout's last touchdown catch. Though Victor Cruz has pronounced himself fit for Sunday's game, the Giants need more from Nicks - and he said they will get it.

Victor Cruz leads the Giants with 47 catches for 677 yards and four touchdowns, and has arguably been their best offensive player over the first half of the season. The 26-year-old has delivered since signing a six-year contract worth $46 million in the offseason.

Justin Pugh was being too predictable. And the problem was that he was still somewhat ignorant to what opposing defensive ends were seeing just three games into his rookie season. Pugh hasn't allowed a sack since a humbling game against Carolina in Week 3.

Nov 8 The ribbing started the moment Victor Cruz came out of the training room Thursday with his No. 8, red non-contact jersey. Justin Tuck was the first to chime in. "As soon as I brought (the red jersey) out here from the training room he was like, 'Oh man, say it ain't so,'" Cruz said with a smile.
"Don't touch him!" joked defensive end Justin Tuck, whose locker is nearby. The Giants are just playing it safe with their star wide receiver, who suffered a neck injury in their last game, a win over the Philadelphia Eagles 11 days ago.

David Wilson's season is now officially over. The Giants' starting running back, who has been sidelined since early October with an injured neck, was officially placed on the season-ending injured reserve list on Thursday as the Giants cleared room on their 53-man roster for running back Andre Brown.
Tom Coughlin could not have envisioned that Brown (6 feet, 227 pounds) would become the eighth back employed by the Giants, who have lined up David Wilson, Da'Rel Scott, Brandon Jacobs, Peyton Hillis and Michael Cox in addition to fullbacks Henry Hynoski and John Conner.

Nov 7 Antrel Rolle insisted Wednesday that he isn't backtracking from his comments on Tuesday about Dolphins offensive tackle Jonathan Martin being partly to blame for him allegedly being bullied because he didn't stand up for himself. "I never had a different tune," Rolle said. "I said what I said."
After hearing some of the comments from around the NFL - including those of Antrel Rolle, who said several times on Monday that Martin was at least partially to blame for what happened to him - Coughlin wants to remind his players where the fine line is.

Two weeks after lamenting that he needs a whole offseason "to get back to the old JPP," Jason Pierre-Paul talked bullishly about the second half of this season Wednesday. "Honestly I feel good," Pierre-Paul said, following practice. "It's been eight games, and I'd say I feel like 90 percent now.
When Pierre-Paul is at his best it changes everything for the Giants defense. He was one of the league's most dominant pass rushers when healthy in 2011. He finished with 16.5 sacks that season when the Giants won the Super Bowl. According to Pierre-Paul, though, he sees signs of the old him returning.

The Giants have gone from one healthy running back to almost a handful of ready, willing and able runners in a span of three weeks. Giants coach Tom Coughlin now just needs to decide how to deploy them.
Brandon Jacobs, after his throwback 106-yard performance in Chicago, missed the past two games with a strained hamstring, but returned to practice on Wednesday. Figure Michael Cox is the odd man out and the offensive game plan gives Andre Brown some work and a shared approach with Jacobs and Hillis.
After two straight years of fracturing his left leg, it's probably a good idea for Andre Brown to take precautionary measures when he is expected returns to the field this week to face the Oakland Raiders. Brown will wear a specially designed carbon fiber plate to protect his now twice-shattered fibula.

Nov 6 Antrel Rolle made it clear that he believed Richie Incognito, who has been suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team, to be in the wrong for his alleged harassment of Martin. But Rolle also indicated a belief that Martin could have done more to prevent himself from being bullied.
Nancy Erika Smith, one of the state's top employment attorneys, was outraged to hear Rolle's remarks. "He should be disciplined by the Giants for that," she told NJ.com. "They need serious training and policies and he's going to publicly come out and blame the victim? "Let's see the Giants issue a statement that says, 'This is wrong and (Rolle's) been counseled.' That's what should happen next."

The health of the Giants roster heading into the second half of the season is fairly vibrant and the competition they will confront at quarterback is less than fearsome. After a challenging opening month (Tony Romo, Peyton Manning, Cam Newton, Alex Smith), the drop-of has been stark."
The Vikings started a clearly unprepared Josh Freeman against the Giants in Week 7 and the Eagles went with an obviously injured Michael Vick and a woefully inexperienced Matt Barkley in Week 8. These are the two biggest reasons the Giants have their two wins, and it's possible this run could continue.
After their game against the Raiders on Sunday, the Giants will host a Green Bay Packers team that probably will be without quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers was diagnosed with a fractured left clavicle on Monday, an injury he sustained in Green Bay's loss to Chicago on Monday.

The street value of Super Bowl tickets may ultimately depend on the weather. There are already 960 tickets for sale on StubHub, one of the biggest secondary marketplaces for sporting events. Those tickets are starting at $3,250.

Nov 5 The Giants are 2-6 and in last place in the NFC East, and all three of the other teams in the division won Sunday. As a result, every team in the division gained a half-game on the Giants, who are two and a half games behind first-place Dallas with eight to play.
The Giants begin the second half of their season with three key home games that could conceivably pull them right back to the top of the standings. They host the Raiders, Packers and then the Cowboys.

The bye week off for the players doesn't mean a full week out of the office for everyone. The Giants' coaches were hard at work preparing for the second half of the season, even without a game to play over the weekend.
Asked if the Giants need any dramatic changes after a bye week of self-evaluation, Coughlin said, "We need to play better. We need to play better and we need to win more. That's the dramatics." The players believe they can retain the momentum they established before their week off.

You want to make history? Forget about becoming the first team to host a Super Bowl in its own stadium. Shoot for this: Become the first team to reach the playoffs after starting 0-6. The countdown to 8-8 is 55 days. Here is the road to the playoffs.

Prince Amukamara said he has an understanding of what constitutes bullying and that he would have made a complaint if he felt teammates' behavior had risen to that level. Following the Miami situation from afar, he sees things that go way beyond anything he endured.

Eli Manning, usually evading 300-pound defensive linemen at MetLife Stadium, was tossing footballs to kids that half his size there on Monday night. Around 100 elementary and middle school boys and girls ran drills and played touch football with the Giants quarterback at an event hosted by Citibank for its ThankYou card members.

The Giants have waived inside linebacker Dan Connor after reaching an injury settlement to release him from the injured reserve list. The move was requested by Connor and his agent as they believe Connor is ready to play and contribute.

Nov 4 Cornerback Prince Amukamara has given up less than 10 yards per catch, and has allowed just one touchdown this season. Amukamara says he's been one on one with receivers more now than he has throughout his career. "I don't mind it at all, when a quarterback sees one on one he loves it," Amukamara said. "I'm always expecting the ball to come to me."

As is the case elsewhere on the roster, the week-to-week changes in the Giants' secondary have largely been out of necessity. But what's different about this situation is that the shifting has led to solutions and to a feeling among the players and coaches that they can deploy their defensive backs in a multitude of ways depending on the week and the opponent.

NFC East News
Cowboys 27 - Vikings 23. Cowboys do just enough to avoid an embarrassing loss; Dez Bryant booed. The Dallas Cowboys did what they do best on Sunday, they beat a bad team.
Redskins 30 - Chargers 24. In a performance mired by bloopers and missed opportunities, the Redskins fumbled away a double-digit fourth quarter lead and came dangerously close to losing before outlasting the San Diego Chargers, 30-24, in overtime.
Eagles 49 - Raiders 20. Nick Foles amazes in Eagles win, but true test now comes. Now Foles will try to follow up an historic game with another strong game in Green Bay. The list of active quarterbacks that have thrown over six-touchdowns in a game is the who's who of quarterbacks, with Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Carson Palmer and Aaron Rodgers all gracing the list.

Nov 3 The Giants' defensive line averages 27.4 years of age, a hair behind the Washington Redskins and a fraction ahead of the Indianapolis Colts. Bigger, stronger and younger usually wins out in the NFL. In this case, older is actually holding their own for the Giants. The defensive tackle quartet of Shaun Rogers, Mike Patterson, Cullen Jenkins and Linval Joseph have been the strength of the defense.

Brandon Myers was supposed to take the baton and run with it. The Giants have had a revolving door at tight end over the past several seasons but the production has never dropped off. Until now. Myers, who had 79 catches for 806 yards and four touchdowns last season in Oakland, has just 23 receptions for 265 yards and one touchdown in eight games this season.

Kudos to Giants GM Jerry Reese for pulling off a pair of savvy in-season moves in trading for middle linebacker Jon Beason and signing running back Peyton Hillis off the streets. That both were available is mind-bobbling and the price he paid for Beason - sources tell nj.com it was a mere seventh-round pick - is almost criminal.

In coach Tom Coughlin's previous nine seasons, his Giants at the halfway point were 5-3 twice, 6-2 six times and 7-1 once for a first-half record of 53-19 - a winning percentage of .736. Their second-half swoons were as predictable as frost on the lawn, and the unexpected Super Bowl runs in 2007 and 2011 were sights to behold.

Nov 2 Special Report - Tom Landry, one of the icons of the Dallas Cowboys' franchise and their head coach from 1960 through 1988, spent his playing days and assistant coaching time with the Giants. His wife, Alicia, offered testimony that he died (in 2000) as a Giants' fan. His widow said he was furious at the way he was treated by the team's new owner, Jerry Jones, who appeared at his door at the family home in Austin, Tex., to tell him he was fired. It was the same day that Jones, in a wholesale house-cleaning, also fired general manager Tex Schramm, the architects of all the glory generated by America's Team.

The Giants aren't a prime time team this year. The NFL has flexed the 2-6 Giants' Nov. 17 matchup with the Packers out of NBC's Sunday night slot in favor of an AFC West showdown between the unbeaten Chiefs and 7-1 Broncos. The Giants-Green Bay game at MetLife Stadium will be played at 4:25 p.m. and broadcast on FOX.

In four games, Will Hill has 25 tackles, including a career-high 11 in his first game back against the Eagles on Oct. 6th, and the interception in the second Eagles game. His versatility gives the Giants options in the secondary such as playing three safeties or moving safety Antrel Rolle to nickel.

The stats don't tell the story regarding Justin Tuck's play this season. "Justin is off to an outstanding start. A very solid first half of the season. He's healthy. He's playing really well against the run," defensive line coach Robert Nunn said.

Terrell Thomas has stood out as an inspiring storyline no matter whether the Giants won or lost. He missed the entire 2011 and 2012 seasons with back-to-back ACL reconstructions (he had his first in college) and slowly has eased back onto the field as a nickelback.

Linebackers coach Jim Hermann feels his group has improved since the start of the season. The addition of Jon Beason at middle linebacker is the clearest and biggest reason for this, but Hermann is also happy with what he's seen lately from Spencer Paysinger and Jacquian Williams.

It's been a rough first half of the season for JPP. Even off back surgery that forced him to miss all of training camp, nobody expected eight games with one sack. A sack number that miniscule seemed laughable prior to the season. It's apparent now that the problem is beyond health.

Once Andre Brown is activated, the Giants will have to make a roster move. Among their options are releasing Jacobs or placing Wilson on injured reserve, ending his season. They could release another player as well.

Jerald Ingram is trying not to stress just yet over how the pieces will fit in the Giants' offensive backfield. In what has become a game of musical chairs, the expectation is that eventually - likely sooner rather than later - the music is going to stop and someone will be left out.

Through eight games, Louis Murphy has been on the field for less than 30 snaps. Billed as a deep threat when he signed a one-year deal this offseason, it seems the Giants plans for Murphy have yet to materialize.

Jerry Reese's Super Bowl countdown clock still hangs in the Giants' locker room. And it's not a punchline. Just two weeks ago, it seemed like one.

Nov 1 Cornerback Terrell Thomas and safety Antrel Rolle have been the leaders of a Giants secondary that has played a major role in the team's two-game interlude from an 0-6 start.

Jon Beason has already received lots of praise for the impact he's made since joining the Giants, but linebackers coach Jim Herrmann got to join the chorus this week. "Obviously he's a Pro Bowl-caliber type guy and I think our guys like that in the room," Herrmann said.

For the last three seasons, a Giants tight end has finished as one of Eli Manning's top three most-targeted receivers. That's not breaking any ground in the modern NFL, but when it is a different player each year, the degree of difficulty is ratcheted up.

Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell wasn't going to just give the players everything they wanted. But he was willing to listen to their suggestions, since they were being offered as constructive criticism and an effort to make everyone (including him!) better.

The days of stability along the Giants offensive line are in the past. Through the Giants' first eight games, the team has already started four different combinations on the offense line, and the same five have never started more than two games in a row.

NFC East News
Eagles - If they have the Nick Foles who played against Tampa Bay at quarterback, they will have every chance to beat the Raiders. If they have the Foles who played against Dallas, they will have virtually no chance to beat the Raiders.
Redskins - President Obama helped fuel the decades-long argument about the team's name when he said this month that if he were the team's owner, he would think about changing it. In response, Snyder wrote a letter to fans calling the team's name "a badge of honor."
Cowboys - Why Tom Landry died a Giants fan. Tom Landry's widow said she still cheers on the Cowboys' NFC East rivals to this day. "The Giants are still like family," Alicia Landry said in a December 2011 interview, according to the book.

OCT 31 After players return from the bye on Monday, the Giants and MetLife Stadium will host Oakland, Green Bay, and Dallas to round out the month of November. "We realize, hey, we're still in this thing," Eli Manning said. "As bad as it started off, we can make it right. We can fix this, and it's just going to come down to how we finish this season."

Terrell Thomas' comeback story only got better Wednesday when he was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week. The Giants cornerback had 11 tackles, a sack and forced fumble in a 15-7 win Sunday over the Eagles.

It took less than a month for Giants middle linebacker Jon Beason to achieve folk-hero status around the team's facility. He has also been credited with easing into a mentoring role with some of the team's younger linebackers, namely former sixth-round pick Jacquian Williams.

The Giants' sack total finally reached double-digits when they notched a season-high four in their 15-7 victory over the Eagles last Sunday, but defensive line coach Robert Nunn said the pass rush really began to sizzle the week before against Minnesota. The key has been stopping the run.

Through eight games, Brandon Myers has been one of the most disappointing players on the Giants. But it's not all Myers' fault, says longtime tight ends coach Mike Pope. In half a season with the Giants, Myers has just 23 catches for 265 yards, putting him on pace for a 46-catch, 530-yard year. .

The notorious Super Bowl XLVIII countdown clock, marking the days until the big spectacle at MetLife Stadium on Feb. 2, remains in Big Blue's locker room, and despite the debacle that has been the first half of the Giants' 2013 season, it's not coming down. That's according to general manager Jerry Reese who put up the clock before the season to light a fire under the Giants.

OCT 30 Nicks ready to break out. Giants wide receivers coach Kevin M. Gilbride thinks Nicks is on the verge of resembling the standout player he was two seasons ago.
Even though Giants GM Jerry Reese admitted teams called him about Nicks and added 'We always leave our options open,' a team source said the Giants never seriously considered a deal.

GM Jerry Reese was questioned repeatedly about why the Giants started the season with six consecutive losses. His answers, which varied little, essentially focused on the fact that it resulted from shortcomings throughout the football operation.
Every time the 2-6 GM of the Giants began talking about his 2-6 head coach, it didn't sound one bit like Tom Coughlin was 2-6. Here's the only way it could have been interpreted: Tom Coughlin will be the coach of the Giants as long as he wants to be.

Much of the public finger-pointing as the Giants began their season 0-6 was directed at Jerry Reese. He finally came to his own defense (kind of, sort of) on Tuesday -- two days after the team's second straight win and during their bye week. Reese seemed to agree that he deserved some of the blame, but not all, for the proud organization's worst first half of a season in 33 years.
Reese decided to trust that Chris Snee could come back from hip surgery and David Baas could recover from a lingering neck issue. He thought Justin Tuck's shoulder would be better and that Jason Pierre-Paul could rebound quickly from back surgery. He also decided to sell on Ahmad Bradshaw and trust David Wilson and Andre Brown to be the right mix in the backfield.

Stadium News
Don't mess with Chris Christie's Super Bowl. There is an edge to the New Jersey governor's sense of humor, but it's hard to imagine there also wasn't an undercurrent of seriousness in a story Christie told Tuesday about the grim fate awaiting those who allow for any electrical disruption on Feb. 2, when the region is hosting the first outdoor cold-weather Super Bowl.

OCT 29 The Giants enter the bye week with renewed life, whether you want to believe it or not. They're only two games out of first place with half a season to play.
When the Giants players return to work, coach Tom Coughlin knows there are plenty of areas to improve. Two wins hasn't camouflaged the warts.

The process to simplify the Giants defense began at halftime of the Bears game when a group of Giants defensive players approached coordinator Perry Fewell.
For a team that entered the season with far more questions on defense than they had on offense, the Giants are being carried by a defensive unit that has not allowed a touchdown in 10 consecutive quarters and is undergoing a transformation right before our eyes. .

Andre Brown, who has yet to play this season after suffering a broken left leg during the preseason, said on Monday he expects to return against the Raiders on Nov. 10 at MetLife Stadium.
It's important to remember that Andre Brown never thought he should have been put on injured reserve (designated for return) in the first place.

Cowboys' collapses leave door open for RG3, Redskins to steal NFC East from everyone. This is not an ordinary season. As recently as last December, the NFC East was still one of football's toughest divisions. Going into the last game of the season, the NFC East had three teams with a legitimate chance at two playoff spots. Now there is no guarantee the division winner will have a winning record.

On The Game: Game 8
Gamegirl - "The game came down to the Giants having to recover an onside kick, and then after that with the Eagles having the ball at their own 16 yard line with 27 seconds left, Will Hill ended all the drama by intercepting Barkley's long pass at the Giants 38 yard line. Now the Giants have won two in a row, and we'll just have to see how the other teams in the division do."
Mikefan. -"In this game the Giants showed they can muster up some offense and the defense has been playing very well, stopping quarterbacks and top runners. The offense had control of the ball for over 38 minutes and the defense came up with 2 interceptions and 4 sacks. I don't know where the Eagles are at. Both their experienced quarterbacks are either injured or inept, and their rookie has most of his drives ending in turnovers."

Cowboys 30 - Lions 31. Dominated offensively and defensively, the Cowboys had no business being in the game but lost it in a way only they can, giving up a touchdown with 12 seconds left to play on a Matthew Stafford leap after blowing two 10-point leads in the fourth quarter.
Redskins 21 - Broncos 45. It's not as if Denver winning was a surprise. Most predicted the Broncos would win. But it's the manner in which the Redskins lost that should be disconcerting.

Giants (1-6) vs Eagles (3-4)
Last Sunday the Eagles fought it out with the Dallas Cowboys for the top spot in the NFC East. The Cowboys won out 17-3 in front of the Philly fans who really had nothing much to cheer for. Quarterback Nick Foles left with a head injury and with Michael Vick out due to a hamstring, Matt Barkley came in and threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter.
The Giants played their game on Monday night and managed their first victory of the season. The level of competition was down a few notches with Minnesota fielding a quarterback who had just recently signed on to their team. It was a 27-3 victory and the Giants gave their hometown crowd something to cheer about, the first win of the season.

OCT 27 Will today be the last time Eagles fans see Eli Manning in a Giants uniform? Unless the Giants pull a stunning second-half turnaround and that would mean a must-win today at the Linc against the Eagles, look for a major rebuilding project to happen in and around the Meadowlands before the 2014 season starts.

All right Giants, this is it. No, seriously. This really is it. You've run out of get-out-of-jail free cards. Each week from now, until they meet official elimination from playoff contention, the Giants will cling to hopes that the rest of their games remain relevant, with a playoff carrot dangling at the end of the stick.

The Giants (1-6) will seek to snap an eight-game road losing streak today against the Eagles (3-4) at Lincoln Financial Field, and there will be no question - most notably in the defensive huddle - about whom they will be following.
Jon Beason knew he would feel at home with the Giants long before his brief, introductory conversation with Coughlin. "Hey John, how you doing?" "Coach, pleasure, nice to officially meet you. By the way, what position do you want me to play?" "Well, we see you as the Mike."
On Sunday, when the Giants face the Eagles in Philadelphia, he will make his third straight start at middle linebacker for Big Blue, and he could prove to be the key ingredient the team needs to slow down Chip Kelly's fast-break offense.

The Giants are the first team to get a second crack at Chip Kelly's high-speed offense and they come to town just in time to welcome back Michael Vick, who missed the past two games with a hamstring injury.
LeSean McCoy, the NFL's leading rusher with 685 yards, said he didn't "show up" in Philadelphia's 17-3 loss to Dallas last week. The former All-Pro had only 55 yards rushing on 18 carries. Instead of crediting the Cowboys' defense for a strong effort, McCoy accepted the blame.

Peyton Hillis goes from watching 'Monday Night Football' to playing in It. A five-year NFL veteran who had been discarded by three teams in the last three years, Hillis assumed his football career was probably over. Then the Giants summoned him for a tryout. He arrived in New Jersey with a pair of cleats and a small bag of belongings, half expecting a fleeting, 24-hour stay.

OCT 26 For the Giants, Sunday's game against the Eagles is a chance to get back in the NFC East race. For Peyton Hillis and Michael Cox, it's a second chance to make a first impression. With Brandon Jacobs almost certainly out with a hamstring injury, Hillis and Cox will again share the carries on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.
The pair are the only two healthy running backs on the roster besides fullback John Conner. The 23 touches by Hillis were the most he's had since 2011. It was his first game in the 2013 season and just the second time he had been the featured back in a game in the last two seasons.

It has been open season on Giants defensive end Justin Tuck for the past year or so. Critics have been taking shots at him from all angles. And with the Giants off to a 1-6 start, they're taking aim again, saying the ninth-year pro is a big part of the team's problem and needs to be among the first to go after the season.
Justin Tuck is well aware of all the negative things that have been said about him and the Giants' defense. But that doesn't mean he cares much about it. "A lot of people don't even know what our assignments are or what went wrong or what went right when it goes right," Tuck said. "They just see the end score, I guess, and make judgments that way."

Mike Patterson played 56 regular-season and two postseason games in Lincoln Financial Field, but on Sunday for the first time he will have to find his way to the visitor's locker room. Patterson was credited with 551 tackles and 16.5 sacks and played on four playoff teams. But he and fellow defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins were released by the Eagles on Feb. 25. Jenkins signed with the Giants on March 11 and Patterson, now a reserve tackle, followed three weeks later.

OCT 25 Giants expecting a healthy Michael Vick and plenty of the read-option offense. Vick, who has missed the past two games with a hamstring injury, practiced for the third consecutive day on Thursday, taking most of the first-team reps.
The bottom line is that Vick has taken almost all the first-team snaps this week. Matt Barkley has worked mostly with the second team. That wouldn't be the case if Vick wasn't expected to start. Foles took the first-team snaps the previous two weeks.

The smartest way to gauge what's still possible for this team is not to look at the Giants' remaining schedule, it's to look at the roster Reese put together. The Giants' roster has holes all over. And what's worse, Reese should've done a better job of anticipating them. So when he does finally surface for his annual bye-week talk next week, it's easy to imagine a wish list of questions you'd like to see him answer.

One of the best things about Hakeem Nicks has always been his hands - his enormous, 10½-inch hands that require XXXXL gloves. And it wasn't just the size that mattered, either. His hands were always pillowy soft. They just absorbed Eli Manning's passes no matter how hard they were thrown. That was the old Nicks, though, back in the days when he looked like he was on the verge of being one of the NFL's best receivers.

Peyton Hillis and rookie Michael Cox are the Giants only two healthy running backs. And despite Hillis feeling sore after carrying the ball for the most times since Christmas 2011, the Giants must stick with him for as long as possible.

Jon Beason has been a New York Giant for just three weeks. But he hopes to be one for a long, long time. "I don't plan on going anywhere. Ever," Beason said. He'd lost his starting job with the Carolina Panthers prior to being traded for a late-round draft choice on Oct. 4. He's now starting at middle linebacker, and led the Giants in tackles the past two weeks.

Jim Cordle has come a long way. Last year, he feared one misstep -- in practice, on game days or in the classroom -- would send him from the Giants' offensive line to the unemployment line. Cordle has a different sense of comfort today as he once again settles in as the starting center after David Baas was placed on season-ending injured reserve Wednesday.

In the Giants' victory over the Minnesota Vikings Monday night, Pierre-Paul was credited with two tackles (one solo), two quarterback hits and he knocked down a Josh Freeman pass. "That was my best game so far all-around." Pierre-Paul said. The fourth-year pro understands he is being compared to the player he was in 2011, when he became a dominant defender with 16.5 sacks.
It's one thing for the rest of us to speculate it, but when defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul actually says, as he did Thursday, that he won't be fully recovered from back surgery until next season, it makes you sit up and take notice. If you weren't sure yet that the Giants had no chance to make anything of this miserable season, you can be now.

The Giants, who didn't allow a touchdown on a punt or kickoff return last season, rank next-to-last in the NFL in punt coverage, allowing 20.4 yards per return. Giants special teams coach Tom Quinn ran out of adjectives to describe his feelings in the wake of his unit giving up its third punt return for a touchdown in Monday night's 23-7 victory over the Vikings.
Tom Coughlin, vexed after Monday night's showing, took a hands-on approach in practice Thursday in hopes of avoiding more of the same Sunday. linebacker Jacquian Williams said. "We're definitely embarrassed and we're definitely going to improve on it from here on out. Tom Coughlin, yes, he was definitely mad."

Former Giants
Phil Simms ranks Eagles offense among five worst units in NFL; Eagles player calls it 'stupid'. Simms' explanation was that because analysts and fans thought Chip Kelly would reinvent the game the offense has been a gigantic disappointment.

OCT 24 Special Report - There is a rumor, almost totally discounted, that the Giants and Vikings are discussing a trade. The deadline is Oct. 29, by the way, so there isn't much time to waste. Ready for the details? The Giants would get running back Adrian Peterson (be still, my heart), in return for defensive end Justin Tuck, running back David Wilson and the team's second- and fifth-round draft picks in 2014.
Tuck is getting older, Wilson is always injured and draft picks, especially the way the Vikings use them, are immaterial. And Peterson? Imagine a team with Eli Manning, Victor Cruz and Rueben Randle (notice no mention of Hakeem Nicks?) along with AP in the backfield. It's mind-boggling.

It was one of those seasons for David Baas, the worst season of his career, and it ended Wednesday with the news he has been placed on season-ending injured reserve by the Giants.
Baas had just returned to action after missing the previous three games with a neck injury. Baas is the second starting offensive lineman to go on injured reserve this season. Longtime right guard Chris Snee was placed on I.R. with a hip injury on Oct. 4.

If you bump into New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs, here's a tip: Don't mention your fantasy football team.
Brandon Jacobs wanted to make one thing clear to fantasy football fans: the only owners and general manager he owes anything to are the Mara and Tisch families and Jerry Reese.

Hakeem Nicks was supposed to be great this year. He used to be great, and with free agency looming at the end of the season, his hope is to be paid like a great wide receiver. Thing is, though, Nicks has not been great.
Nicks does not have a touchdown reception. He is being outplayed by Victor Cruz, and the third receiver, Rueben Randle, has nearly as many receptions (23) and four touchdowns. Forty-one receivers have more receptions than Nicks.
Tom Coughlin wants to see the Hakeem Nicks of old. "He's gotta get better. He's gotta get to the point where the reliability factor is there as strongly as it always has been," the coach said today. "Has it been there up to this point? No."
At his locker, Nicks did not ask for forgiveness. That was primarily due to the fact that he believes he's the same receiver he's always been. "I don't feel like my game is too much different from what it's been in the past," Nicks said.

OCT 23 With the trade deadline fast approaching, count Eli Manning among those who do not want to see the Giants trade Hakeem Nicks. "Obviously, I don't want Hakeem to go," Manning said. "He's been a big part of our success over the years, been a big part of our offense. A great friend of mine and a heckuva player.
Tom Coughlin says Hakeem Nicks knows 'there's a couple of those balls he should have caught'. There are games like Dallas (114 yards, five catches, eight targets) and Philadelphia (142 yards, nine catches, 12 targets) where he looks like the Nicks of old. Then there are games like last night (28 yards, two receptions, nine targets) where it appears something is wrong.

On the morning after he was inactive for the Giants' first win of the season, Jacobs tweeted a picture of a death threat he received from a disgruntled fantasy football player apparently named "Andre Rayner" tweeting from a now deactivated account labeled @DMMeBoo. The tweet threatened the life of Jacobs and his family if he didn't rush for 50 yards against the Vikings.
Another misguided idiot believes Jacobs should have informed his followers he wasn't playing in Monday night's game against the Vikings, which the Giants won, 23-7. Jacobs was a late scratch with a hamstring injury, but a few bozos believe he has an obligation to let fantasy owners know his status..

Peyton Hillis faced the end of his career, he was convinced. But under the MetLife Stadium lights Monday night in front of a national TV audience, Hillis resurrected his career and became a self-proclaimed Roy Hobbs. The newest Giant outperformed Minnesota's All-Pro running back, Adrian Peterson, in New York's 23-7 victory -- its first of the season.

The impact of Jon Beason: What's amazing is that Beason was only available in trade because he'd lost his starting outside linebacker job in Carolina to Giants castoff Chase Blackburn. After two games in New York you can make a legitimate case that Beason is the best defensive player on the team.

The sacks have been coming so infrequently these days that Justin Tuck almost forgot about his signature celebration when he actually got one in Monday night's 23-7 win over the Vikings. It was Tuck's first full sack of the season, and it took him a moment before remembering to do his trademark bow to the crowd.

On The Game: Game 7
Gamegirl - "When was the last time you got to sit at Metlife Stadium and see the Giants start off with a drive like that? They looked nearly unstoppable and they owned the Vikings as they chipped away with one first down after another until they were at the Vikings 16 yard line."
Mikefan. -"If you think about it, it was almost an insult to the Giants that coach Leslie Frazier decided this would be a good place to start his newly signed quarterback. That tells you how dismal the Giants must appear to the rest of the league. The real dismalness came from the special teams unit."

Giants (0-6) vs Vikings (1-4)
Quarterback Matt Cassel did not impress the hopeful fans in Minnesota last week. He threw 2 interceptions in the game and the Panthers turned both into touchdowns. The final score was Panthers 35 - Vikings 10.
Eli Manning had his own problems in a Thursday night matchup in Chicago. His second pass of the game was intercepted and he threw a total of 3 of them, helping the Bears break their two game losing streak. The final score was Bears 27- Giants 21.
Overall - It's hard to believe that the Giants have actually given up twice as many points (209) as they've scored (103), but everything favors them this week against the Vikings. They're catching them at the right time. The Giants have had more time to prepare. The Vikings had to travel and they're starting a new quarterback . With both players coming off the same Tampa Bay team, newly acquired running back Peyton Hillis might even have some limited knowledge to offer the defense on Josh Freeman. The Vikings are thinking - 'What better time to find our quarterback of the future and turn the season around while we still can.' The Giants are thinking - 'Please, please let us get our first win against this really lousy team.' What can go wrong here for the Giants? Stay tuned.
