Game
Notes: "Wow! Nobody expected
the Giants to win today against the Lions. It shows you what this team is made
of that they played the way they did. The ball didn't change hands much in the
first quarter and the Giants were up 3-0. They were actually moving the ball pretty
well against the Lions who are known to stop teams from making first downs. Detroit
tied it up in the second quarter with a field goal and after the Giants went three
and out, the defense caused the Lions to fumble and gave the Giants the ball at
midfield. They went down to the 15 yard line and then almost blew their good fortune
when Eli Manning let the clock run out before the snap. It was bad enough that
they lost five yards on the penalty in the red zone, but then they wasted a time
out trying to figure out what to do next. It turned out that it was well spent
because Eli then completed a 20 yard touchdown pass to Jerrel Jernigan to put
us up 10-3. The Lions got the ball next, and I was excited when the defense stopped
them on a third and one. Unfortunately the special teams unit jumped offsides
on the punt, and I figured here's where we blow this game. Matthew Stafford completed
two big passes to put them on the Giants 11 yard line. Luckily Stafford's last
pass was called back for holding and then the Giants defense came up with a real
big play. Justin Tuck jumped up and clutched Stafford's pass to his chest for
an interception with less than a minute left. I can't describe how I felt
at that point and don't think I'll ever forget that play because the vision of
Tuck holding that ball is etched in my head. On the next drive Eli took a sack
that lost nine yards, but still was able to move the ball close enough for Josh
Brown to kick a long 52 yard field goal and the Giants were up 13-3. I
was probably as amazed as anyone watching the Giants holding their own in this
game and even being in the lead at the half. In the second half the Giants had
the ball first and they went three and out and started doing that every time they
got the ball. The Lions defense must have figured something out at halftime and
they took over the lead 20-13. They looked like the better team on the field and
I had that sinking feeling until Will Hill intercepted a pass and took it in for
a touchdown to tie the game. The Giants fumbled the ball away in overtime,
but overcame that to win the game 23-20. I felt bad for the Detroit fans at the
game because I know how it feels to lose an important game at home. Both teams
had their ups and downs, and Christmas
came a little early for Giants fans who are still hanging in there."
Game Notes:
"The Giants did well in the first half. They were keeping the ball moving
with 10 first downs. They had no turnovers, and with one touchdown and two field
goals, were leading the Lions 13-3. The offense couldn't keep that up however,
and by the time the fourth quarter ended, they had added just 2 more first downs
and had turned the ball over once. The Giants gave the Lions an extra chance to
score when rookie Damontre Moore jumped offsides on the Lions punt near the end
of the half. They saved themselves when Justin Tuck made a nice interception to
kill that drive. In the third quarter Eli Manning was sacked in the endzone
for a safety to add to the Lions tally making it 13-12. In the fourth quarter
the Lions scored a touchdown and were successful on the two pointer to put them
up 20-13. Thanks to the Giants offense giving up those two points earlier, they
now needed a touchdown to tie the game, but it wasn't coming from this struggling
offense. The only reason they got to overtime was Will Hills interception and
touchdown that helped tie the score at 20-20 with five minutes left. The defense
got the job done, holding the Lions to two three-and-outs. With less than a minute
left, the Giants were at midfield and Manning was intercepted. Then It didn't
make sense to me that the Lions didn't try to do something, having 23 seconds
and two timeouts left at the end of the game. They were on their own 25, but why
not take a shot or two for a breakout run or long pass downfield to win the game
instead of committing to overtime. The fans felt the same way judging from the
boos. The Giants got the ball first in overtime and Michael Cox had a great
return taking it to the Giants 49 yard line. Manning completed a 15 yard pass
to tight end Brandon Myers and the Giants were on a roll. That lasted only to
the next play when Andre Brown got hurt and fumbled the ball over to the Lions.
Once again the Giants defense stepped up and the Lions had to punt. On this drive
Tom Coughlin made a gutsy call to go for it on fourth down and seven at midfield
and they made it. After a nice 15 yard catch by Jerrel Jernigan and a 2 yard run
by Bear Pasco, with Brown out, Josh Brown kicked a 45 yard field goal to win it."
