Also, the Giants seem to have extended an olive branch to former tar running back Tiki Barber, or at least head coach Pat Shurmur has, by agreeing to "patch things up" and bestow the respect accorded to other former star players.

Tiki Barber claims his falling out with the Giants had everything to do with former head coach Tom Coughlin and nothing to do with ownership. "It's not really the organization, it was really just Coughlin," Barber said. "It was Tom, not the organization. I have a really good relationship with John Mara and Jon Tisch and really everyone there.

Put veteran cornerback William Gay squarely in the camp of people who believe Eli Manning has enough left in the tank. Manning is one of two main reasons Gay signed with the Giants after spending 10 of his first 11 NFL seasons over two stints with the Steelers.

Solder reaching out to a new teammate is in keeping with his reputation and the track record he built up in his seven years with the Patriots.

If anyone needs a do-over, it is Eli Apple. With a new front office and coaching regime in place, that is exactly what Apple is getting. What he makes of it is up to him.
On the field, Apple said his 2017 season was "up and down," but the Giants still believe in his abilities. "In terms of his stature, his skill set, yeah, he's what you're looking for," Pat Shurmur said.
And that faith is not just in words, but in deed. The Giants made a lot of moves in the offseason but didn't bring in a replacement for Apple - or Janoris Jenkins, who was also suspended last season.

May 13 Day two of rookie mini-camp is in the books with the final practice that is open to the media. It was a chilly, damp and breezy day at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center, but the Giants managed to squeeze in an outdoor practice between the rain showers.
The players were not in pads, the contact was limited and there was no tackling at all. That makes it hard to evaluate anyone, particularly a running back like Saquon Barkley.
It was an intense, jam-packed two days of football drills, but it also gave us a first glimpse into what's yet to come from the New York Giants Class of 2018.

May 12 No player arrived at the Giants' team facility earlier than Saquon Barkley. And then, nearly 12 hours later, Barkley was the last one off the field.

Jan 31 Pat Shurmur's first coaching staff is rounding into shape. The latest addition is Hal Hunter, a veteran offensive line coach, who fills that role with the Giants and thus takes command of a unit that had its fingerprints all over last season's 3-13 disaster.
Hal Hunter, who was out of coaching in 2017, has been hired as the Giants offensive line coach. Hunter last worked as the Browns offensive line coach in 2016 after serving as co-offensive line for the Colts from 2013-15. Hunter was fired by the Browns after the team set a dubious franchise record with 66 sacks allowed while going 1-15 in 2016.

Evan Engram productive, even if miscast, as a rookie. Engram's the team's 2017 first-round draft choice, was productive despite not being used by the Giants in accordance to the strengths he showed as a college player.

Johnny Manziel tweeted a video of himself and Odell Beckham Jr. working out in Los Angeles alongside Jamal Liggin, Beckham's long-term personal trainer. It was tagged "deadly combination." Just days after he met with newly hired head coach Pat Shurmur, who has made it abundantly clear that Beckham must clean up his act and carry himself in a manor befitting of the Giants.

Former Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams has a warning for any Giants players who will be playing under new GM Dave Gettleman. "He's your problem now," Williams said. Williams referred to his own personal experience of being cut by Gettleman, as well as the exit of five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Steve Smith, as to why he feels the way he does.

The Giants appear to be posing a not-so-subtle ultimatum to Odell Beckham Jr.: If you want a new contract, you have to grow up. It will fall to Shurmur to establish a level of behavioral expectations for Beckham, and then make sure that the star wide receiver complies with those rules.
Speaking of dealing with players in general and not specifically Beckham, Shurmur said "I have zero tolerance for people who don't compete, zero tolerance for people who don't give effort, and zero tolerance for people who have a lack of respect."

A new coach is supposed to be a beacon of light for a struggling franchise - a reason to believe in brighter days ahead. So it didn't seem like a good omen when, just 25 seconds after Pat Shurmur was introduced as the new head coach of the Giants, the lights in the auditorium suddenly went off.
Shurmur showed composure and compassion as he offered his plan for getting a team that had descended into dysfunction last season back on course. He showed himself to be a demanding, no-nonsense coach, yet a man who will also offer a clean slate to anyone who contributed to the myriad problems that surfaced last year.

Pat Shurmur got to work quickly to fill his staff after officially being hired as Giants head coach on Monday night. By Tuesday night, it was reported that Shurmur will hire James Bettcher as defensive coordinator.

Jan 22 Giants are now free to hire their next head coach. Now that the Vikings are eliminated from the playoffs - routed by the Eagles in Sunday night's NFC Championship - the Giants can hire Shurmur at any time. They are expected to meet with him Tuesday for a second interview and a contract will soon follow.

Pat Shurmur flew home with the Vikings on Sunday night and will be part of exit interviews with players on Monday. Then, at some point in the next day or so, he'll have an entrance interview with the Giants.

As Vikings offensive coordinator and presumed Giants head coach Pat Shurmur walked through the tunnels of Lincoln Financial Field after Sunday's 38-7 loss to the Eagles, he came across a familiar face in quarterback Nick Foles. Eli Manning and new Giants general manager Dave Gettleman recently had their much-anticipated meeting, "Yes, it was a great meeting," Gettleman told The Post on Thursday. "Eli, obviously on this team, there's only three guys who are still here from when I left. Eli, Zak DeOssie and JPP [Jason Pierre-Paul]."

Here's Odell Beckham's last chance to become Giants leader. Pat Shurmur will be Beckham's third head coach, and the first two - Tom Coughlin and Ben McAdoo - couldn't make it past two seasons with him.

Shurmur was the Eagles' offensive coordinator in 2013, during which second-year quarterback Nick Foles posted a QB rating of 119.2 with 27 touchdowns and two interceptions. The only players with a higher single-season passing rating are Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning.
Shurmur has shown he's a resourceful leader, having helped the Vikings get within a win of the Super Bowl with a journeyman quarterback who has produced a career year. The Vikings' offensive line underwent a major personnel transformation this season and has only gotten better.

What does this mean for Shurmur's new coaching staff? It could mean Steve Spagnuolo gets to stay as the defensive coordinator. The two got their NFL initiation in 1999 on Andy Reid's staff with the Eagles and spent eight years together in Philadelphia.
Spagnuolo was one of the hottest names in coaching after the 2008 season. He was hired as coach of the Rams and tapped Shurmur as his offensive coordinator for two seasons. That gave Shurmur the launching pad for his first and only previous head coaching job: A two-year stint with the Browns during which he went 9-23.

Jan 14 Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is the No. 1 candidate for the Giants and Lions. This is the easiest decision Patricia will make in his head coaching career. Indications are Patricia and the Giants want each other with the Lions hoping his long-time association and friendship with Detroit GM Bob Quinn when they were together in New England for 12 years will be enough to attract him to the Motor City and keep him away from the bright lights of Broadway.

Giants can't be left at the coaching altar this time. Do not under any circumstance be left standing in this high-stakes game of musical chairs by Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia taking the Lions job and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels taking the Colts job and Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur taking the Cardinals job.

Jan 13 Devon Kennard is entering an offseason full of uncertainty. The Giants linebacker is set to become a free agent after completing his rookie contract. Kennard wants to return to the Giants, even though he knows the team will be much different after general manager Jerry Reese and head coach Ben McAdoo were fired in December.

Matt Patricia could be coordinating his final defensive game plan for the New England Patriots on Saturday night, before relocating four hours south to be the Giants' new head coach. It is unlikely, of course, that the AFC's top-seeded Patriots (13-3) will lose to the fifth-seeded Tennessee Titans (9-7) at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., in a prime-time NFL divisional round clash (8:15 p.m.).

Dave Gettleman will be looking for the next Shaun O'Hara. He wants the version of O'Hara before he came to the Giants. The undrafted player who was unheralded and relatively unproven in four seasons with the Browns.

No introductions were necessary Wednesday when Steve Spagnuolo interviewed for the Giants head-coaching job, a position he held on an interim basis for the final four games this season.

Dave Gettleman wasn't only meeting with Steve Spagnuolo as the first candidate to interview for the Giants' head coach vacancy on Wednesday. He also had his first sit-down with cornerback Eli Apple, who was suspended for the final game of the season.
