"It
was a real treat for the fans to go to MetLife Stadium today, and see the Giants
come away with a win. It hadn't happened since that exciting overtime win over
Kansas City back on November 19. Today they started strong with two touchdowns
in the first quarter. They were lucky on the second one, because Kelvin Sheppard
had intercepted Kirk Cousins and the offense needed only 19 yards. Orleans Darkwa
ran for three, and Hunter Sharp caught Eli Manning's pass for a touchdown. Because
they missed on the extra point on the first one, they went for two and failed
with that, so the score was 12-0 in favor of the Giants. Things were looking good
when the Redskins went three-and-out. Manning took over, and quickly got two first
downs before there was a holding penalty that took away Wayne Gallman's 16 yard
run. That was followed up by a pass by Manning that was intercepted, giving the
ball to the Redskins at the Giants 20-yard line. Two plays later, Cousins
saw an opening, and ran 12 yards for a touchdown and the score was 12-7. It looked
like it was going to be another one of those Giants games, so I wasn't too excited
when the Giants next had a 1st-and-goal at Washington's 6-yard line. True to form,
they ended up with a field goal. Then with one minute left, Manning took a sack,
and they went three-and-out. There were only 18 seconds left, but the punt was
returned 29 yards. The Redskins had only four seconds left on the clock so they
went for a 49 yard field goal and made it, to end the half with a 15-10 score.
The third quarter started with Cousins being intercepted on the third play
by Ross Cockrell. Later in the quarter, they missed on a 47 yard field goal. The
Giants started a drive that went into the fourth quarter, and Aldrick Rosas kicked
a 29 yard field goal to give the Giants some breathing room with an 18-10 lead.
The defense kept the Redskins in check, and Sheppard intercepted Cousins once
again. The Giants could have actually scored again after running the ball down
to Washington's 1-yard line. It was a 1st-and-goal, but Manning knelt three times
to run the clock out. So the Giants ended up with an 18-10 win. It was a really
bad season for the Giants and the fans, but at least it had a happy ending. I've
heard all the talk, and I really hope Eli Manning is back next year. We will have
a new head coach, and I don't know what other changes they'll be making, but I
think having Manning on the team is a definite must."
"Eli
Manning threw the ball 45 times last week, and this time only 28. It flipped what
happened in that game with the Cardinals, where they ran the ball only 20 times.
The running was dominant today as the Giants took to the ground 44 times. Even
if you ignore Orleans Darkwa's big 75 yard run for a touchdown, that gives you
179 yards on 40 carries, excluding Manning's 'kneel downs' to end the game. However,
it all counts, so the Giants totaled 260 running yards for a 5.9 yard average
per carry. They had the same group of running backs on the field. What was
different was the offensive line. Offensive tackle Ereck Flowers had started all
fifteen games this season, and for this game was officially listed as inactive
with a groin injury. There were reports Flowers refused to practice this week,
and was benched. Right tackle Bobby Hart was waived from the team for similar
reasons. Before anyone gets too excited about the players who took their places,
you have to remember that the Redskins had their share of dents on their defensive
line. Still, dealing with linebacker Ryan Kerrigan is no easy task, and he was
able bring pressure, and had two sacks on Eli Manning. The Giants closed out
the season with a win over the Redskins. Giants Pride means something to some
players and to their fans. Interim head
coach Steve Spagnuolo was able to enjoy his first win since taking over from the
fired Ben McAdoo. It might be his last game as a coach for the Giants since new
management brings in changes. One thing the Giants know, is since the Indianapolis
Colts beat the Houston Texans, the Giants will pick second overall in the draft.
It will be interesting to see what they do with that."
