Game
Notes: "The Giants treated
the fans to some exciting football today. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie had two
interceptions and returned one for a touchdown. Dwayne Harris had a kickoff return
for a touchdown to break a tie and most important, the Giants stopped their five
game losing streak with the Cowboys. The Cowboys took the lead from the start
and had it at the end of each of the first two quarters. At one point in the
second quarter the Giants went ahead 7-3 when Orleans Darkwa ran the ball for
a few carries and looked like he couldn't be stopped. Darkwa surprised all the
fans and the Cowboys with his running on that drive and he finished it with a
15 yard touchdown. The Cowboys scored a field goal and a touchdown after that,
and the score was 13-7. The Giants were
keeping it close but I thought we were in big trouble when Eli Manning threw a
pass that was intercepted at the Giants 29 yard line. Fortunately that ruling
was overturned when the replay showed that it had hit the ground before bouncing
up from the defender's foot and being caught. A big pass from Eli to Dwayne Harris
right after that play got the ball into field goal range and they closed the gap
to 13-10 in favor of the Cowboys. That was the score at the end of the half. It
could have been a whole different story if that interception had counted. Harris
also came up big for the Giants playing on special teams. He was the one who ran
the kickoff back for a touchdown. That was excitement added on after seeing Rodgers-Cromartie
showboating his way into the endzone in the quarter just before that. Harris put
the Giants in the lead for good. Odell Beckham Jr. had only 4 catches and Rueben
Randle just two, but one of Randle's was an impressive Beckham-like one handed
catch that had the fans buzzing. All
in all, it wasn't quite the same as beating Tony Romo and the Cowboys, but anytime
you can get a win over that team it's a good day."
Game Notes:
"The Cowboys are trying to get by without Tony Romo and were probably hoping
for more from Matt Cassel than 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. They got their
running game going with Darren McFadden and that should have helped, but turnovers
are a killer. The Cowboys were hoping that Matt Cassel could give them the extra
boost they needed at the quarterback position that Brandon Weeden wasn't providing
in Tony Romo's absence. They did get some longer throws downfield, but it came
at a cost. Cassel threw three interceptions. It's a good thing the Giants were
facing Cassel in his first outing as the quarterback, because the Cowboys racked
up 233 yards on the ground against them. They needed a few mistakes to come their
way in order to win this game. Despite the 27 points on the scoreboard, Eli Manning
had no touchdown passes. There was a touchdown run by Orleans Darkwa in the second
quarter. Another was added by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie after one of his two
interceptions, and finally there was a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown
by former Cowboy Dwayne Harris for the game winning score. Things looked better
on the ground with Darkwa, though people wondered if he was out there as some
kind of mistake or after thought. Darkwa got his first carries of the year and
made good on them to become the second leading yardage gainer on the day. The
four running backs totaled 136 yards for their highest output on the season, almost
closing in on the meager amount Manning achieved passing to his receivers. Manning
completed just 13 passes for 170 yards for a completion percentage of 54.2, all
lows for him on the year. What he did do was manage the game well without making
any mistakes, and that's what the Cowboys needed from Cassel. His numbers were
all better than Manning's and without the turnovers, the Cowboys would have won
this game. It's nice to be in first place in the division, but the Giants have
a lot of work to do for next week's game in New Orleans. The defense let the Cowboys
run all over them for 233 yards. There is no pass rush to speak of, and you can't
rely just on turnovers and special teams play to continue to win football games
for you."
