Jets scored their first two TDs of the preseason.
Giants receivers looked good totaling 287 yards.
Ron Dayne made a fourth and 1, and next play ran
7 yards for a TD.
Giants play the Ravens next.
The
Jets were tough last night Gamegirl.
"They
really brought it to my Giants. I guess the Jets
are on a real high right now after beating the Ravens
and Giants back to back.
They were on a mission to show that they could play
with the big boys, and our usually tough defense
couldn't slow the Jets down. I know we were playing
without some starters, but I was expecting better.
Vinny Testaverde was really sharp in this game,
especially on that one touchdown drive. You could
see that he was enjoying himself on the field the
way things were going."
He
should be happy, passing for 148 yards and a touchdown
in the first-half.
"Yes,
there was a big groan from the crowd when Chrebet
caught that touchdown pass. Dave Thomas was right
next to Chrebet, cornering him at the back of the
end zone, and all Chrebet had to do was raise his
arms up and catch the ball. I guess it didn't help
that Thomas had his back turned on Testaverde and
didn't know that the ball was coming."
Overall,
Dave Thomas didn't help his cause that game.
"Right,
there were a few other plays he didn't look good
on, but the whole secondary seemed to be scrambling
and the Jets kept coming at us. Emmanuel McDaniel
was filling in for Sehorn, and Will Allen and Will
Peterson are both talented rookies, but their inexperience
showed. Let's face it, the Jets pushed our guys
around, and we have to do a lot better."
Any
bright spots?
"Ron
Dayne looked good on quite a few plays, and he broke
away on some where he would have been stopped last
year. It was good to see him make that fourth and
one play and follow it up with a seven yard touchdown
run. Dayne's definitely much trimmer and faster
than last year. Ron Dixon had that nice run on the
reverse, and made some real nice catches including
that one for a touchdown, and Joe Jurevicius was
more than reliable out there. Greg Comella never
seems to get enough press for the work he does.
Rodney Williams has been kicking good, and he pulled
off that fake punt, getting a first down for us.
That was exciting to watch."
What
did you think of this one Mikefan?
"The
Jets had us. They controlled the line of scrimmage
in the first half, and kept plugging away, like
on that scoring drive, they messed up with some
penalties, but took it in stride. They were confident,
kept up the fast pace, and went on to score, making
it 7-0 on that easy pass to Chrebet. It was a bummer
to see Dave Thomas standing there watching the whole
thing, and he might as well have applauded the play
since he had a great view of the whole thing. To
be fair, our defensive line, after stuffing Martin
twice for no gain, gave Testaverde
plenty of time on that play to find Chrebet. Anyway,
that was a good long drive by the Jets and it beat
on our defense and kept our offense off the field."
The
Giants did have some players out.
"Yeah,
as was mentioned, they started this game without
four key defensive players. Tackle Ryan Hale and
rookie end Cedric Scott were subbing for Keith Hamilton
and Kenny Holmes. Cornelius Griffin got that first
quarter knock down on Testaverde, but then had to
leave in the second quarter with a sprained ankle.
Less pressure up front means the secondary can be
exploited, and it was. Anyway, now the the Jets
have the distinction of scoring the first touchdowns,
both passing and rushing against the Giants this
preseason."
How
about the offense?
"The
front line was intact for the first time this preseason.
It would have been nice to have had Tiki Barber
and tight end Howard Cross in there too of course,
and the Giants were also missing Ike Hilliard and
Amani Toomer. Still, the fill-in receivers did real
good this game. They totaled 287 yards from all
three quarterbacks. Starter Kerry Collins got rattled
by the constant pass rush put on him by John Abraham.
Collins really messed up throwing a pass while back-peddling
from Abraham's rush and was intercepted by Victor
Green. Luke Petitgout had his hands full trying
to hold Abraham off this game. That kid has talent.
Jason Garrett always seems to play well. He was
12-of-15 for 105 yards. Third-string quarterback
Jesse Palmer didn't do so well on his last opportunity,
where he intentionally downed the ball to save clock
time. He had the time and just ended up cutting
his last-chance drive short by one play. Fassel
let him know about it."
Your thoughts on the running game and Ron Dayne?
"He's
looking better, breaking more tackles. Gamegirl
mentioned those good plays he made, and the line
could have done more for him. Dayne's total numbers
don't look that good, but they took away 16 yards
for that fumble loss. I'm starting to feel he'll
be a much better mix with Tiki now with some pro
experience under his belt, and with his dedication
to being much more versatile."
Anything
else?
"Special
teams still needs some work. They especially didn't
do well against kick returner Chad Morton who the
Jets just picked up in a trade with the Saints.
Also, don't expect much if the Giants aren't playing
full strength in that last preseason game against
the Ravens."

Notes
Jets
have won the last six exhibition meetings with the
Giants to even the all-time preseason series, 16-16-1.
Giants safety Omar
Stoutmire was the only active player in the game
to have suited up for both of the rivals. He appeared
in 12 games (five starts) for the Jets in 1999,
and has become the Giants' first backup at both
safety positions.
The
coaches have to get to the NFL limit of 65 players
by Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Giants have to trim 15
players and coach Jim Fassel said he will probably
make his first few cuts Monday. Edwards announced
he's likely to name his 14 cuts Monday.
