Notes: "You didn't get the usual preseason
game fare from Bill Belichick's Patriots. You paid for your ticket and you got
to see both Tom Brady and Eli Manning on the field. This was the first time they
played in the same game since the Giants Super Bowl victory. Tom Brady didn't
play in the last two preseason games and the teams haven't been matched in regular
season. I know they had limited play and it's just preseason, but as a fan I got
a little bit more excited to see them both out there. It brought back some memories
and it also turned out to be a good game. It started with a great opening drive
by Eli. He showed great vision and execution and hit all the right players when
checking down. He even hard counted and drew the defense offsides on one play
although it wasn't necessary to collect that penalty. Hakeem Nicks caught a pass
and took it 12 yards. Before long, Kevin Boss was reeling in a touchdown pass.
I couldn't see what was happening with the extra point attempt but somehow it
ended up with Matt Dodge passing the ball into the endzone and the Giants coming
away with no extra points. Tom Brady was just as sharp as Eli was with his
opening drive and he also had the benefit of starting off on the Giants 45 yard
line thanks to our special teams coverage. He covered the short distance and before
long completed a touchdown pass to his tight end. That put them ahead, 7-6. Manning's
next drive stalled, and Brady was intercepted on his next series and that was
it for the star quarterbacks tonight. The score was tight all the way and
the Giants defense even held New England out of the endzone on three attempts
from the 1 yard line. When the Patriots went up in the fourth quarter 17-12 that
could have been it. The Giants got nowhere on their next drive, but then with
3 minutes and change left, Rhett Bomar got the job done with a pass to Duke Calhoun
that went for a 60 yard touchdown. Wow! The Giants went for two and made it. The
defense held and the final score was 20-17."
Game
Notes: "The Giants obviously
looked much better in this game than the last. The starting offense seemed to
have it all together even though they didn't have regular Shaun O'Hara playing.
The defense played strong and will be even better when cornerbacks Corey Webster
and Aaron Ross are back. The defense held New England's running game to just 73
yards while the Giants offense picked up 160. Ahmad Bradshaw looks really hard
to stop, and Jonathan Goff had a nice night at middle linebacker. The coverage
teams still need work. We didn't
get to see much of Brandon Jacobs in this game. I doubt they were afraid of another
Eli Manning collision between the two. The one time Brandon Jacobs ran with the
ball, he tossed it back to Eli Manning who fumbled it, and then knocked it out
of bounds to avoid a turnover. Manning threw a pass to Jacobs on the very next
play and that went for 6 yards. That drive sputtered, and that was it for Jacobs.
Rhett Bomar is likely a keeper,
playing well and even if they did pick up a more experienced quarterback would
you really want Bomar out there for the Eagles or Redskins to pick up? Think about
it. They 'iced' quarterback Jim Sorgi, putting him on injured reserve and Bomar
knows too much at this point. If something happens down the line, who knows -
maybe get Kurt Warner back to finish out the season once he's done with Dancing
With The Stars." Scoring:
