Game
Notes: "Wow! I'd have to say that
was a very impressive showing by the Giants on both defense and offense, especially
against a strong team like the Baltimore Ravens. The defense took the field first,
and backed the Ravens up until they had to punt. Somehow though, after a strong
kickoff and a Giants holding penalty, the Giants offense was stuck starting on
their own eight yard line. Eli Manning took care of that problem right away with
a snappy 17 yard pass to Michael Jennings, but they couldn't keep this drive going.
The Ravens took over but Sam Madison came away with a nice interception on a pass
from Steve McNair to kill their drive. By the end of the second quarter the
Ravens were up 3-0, but the Giants were starting to move the ball pretty good,
and Eli Manning hit Steve Smith with a 10 yard touchdown pass for a 7-3 lead.
That became 7-6 by the end of the half, and unfortunately, the injuries kept piling
up. By then, Michael Jennings was out with an achilles tendon injury, Will Demps
with a dislocated elbow, Sam Madison with a hamstring injury, and Steve Smith
had a concussion. The backup runners Ahmad Bradshaw, Ryan Grant, and Derrick
Ward kept the ball moving in the second half and the Giants held the lead for
the rest of the game, but this win sure was an expensive one as far as injuries
go."
Game Notes:
"Both teams fought a tough hard
game with no let up. The coaches wanted to show that they were solidly behind
their players. Tom Coughlin challenged one play where it looked unlikely that
they had recovered a fumble, and Brian Billick went for it on fourth and inches
instead of taking the easy three points. Eli Manning fumbled the ball twice, putting
a slight damper on his otherwise good performance. Tiki Barber picked the
wrong night to come out of the closet on Eli Manning. Barber said that Eli came
across "almost comical" trying to handle the leadership role when given
the chance. Cris Collinsworth seemed to be overly exuberant allowing the new (intruding?)
sports jock to hang himself with every word. If Barber wants to be a successful
sports announcer, he should get his timing down. Eli Manning led his team
to a touchdown and went 10 of 13 for 114 yards before Tiki got his chance to share
this 'halftime report'. Tiki has come under some criticism since retiring, that
he was out for himself last season, and he probably lost half the Giant fan base
who respected him after hearing this cheap-shot report. Pay attention to what's
happening on the field and in the game before you speak next time Tiki, or you'll
be old news yourself real fast. John Madden chose to pick on Brandon Jacobs,
predicting that he wouldn't be able to last a full season or be able to handle
screen passes. At least you're forewarned that when you buy your next Madden game,
Jacobs might not be a star performer for you."
