yards on 5 carries and scored on a 5 yd run. Reuben Droughns rushed for 17
yards on 5 carries. Brandon Jacobs rushed for 15 yards on 4 carries. Jeremy
Shockey and Anthony Mix each caught touchdown passes. Game
Notes: "This was a preseason game
with a lot of no-shows. It was a good chance to see what the parking situation
is all about. Whatever you experienced, it's not going to get better when the
crowd grows to full size for the opening day. I can see scalpers giving up on
selling extra tickets. Instead they'd make a good buck selling big screen sets
to the fans leaving the stadium after each game. Anyway, it's great to get
back into the football season. It felt good to see Jeremy Shockey catch a touchdown
pass from Eli Manning, but they weren't in the game for very long. l was hoping
to see Brandon Jacobs play more than he actually did but Reuben Droughns and Derrick
Ward were effective in their roles. Jared Lorenzen threw some hot passes, but
seemed like he was hurrying things too much. The defense didn't look good and
I was expecting more after reading all the training camp stories about the new
defense. It can't just be that they're missing Michael Strahan, because he didn't
play in the first preseason game last year. They did fine, especially considering
that the other team was playing it's second preseason game. The special teams
unit made some nice plays. We lost this game, but don't forget that Plaxico Burress
and Amani Toomer didn't play at all and Fred Robbins was out. This was only Steve
Spagnuolo's first game as the Giants defensive coordinator seeing his guys play
in a game, and now the Giants know everything they have to work on before traveling
to Baltimore next week."
Game Notes:
"So,
the first preseason game of the year - what can you say? One thing for sure, the
Giants defense has a lot to learn playing under a new defensive coordinator, and
even more to learn, playing without Michael Strahan. Hopefully the Strahan issue
will be settled way before the season starts for real. New defensive coordinator
Steve Spagnuolo is willing to let the players be more aggressive. Unfortunately,
they don't all have the skill to do that so well, and can be easily fooled. The
defense has had it too easy in training camp practice and this game allowed the
players to see just how far they can take things. The Giants offense stalled
on their first drive and looked bad right away on the second, when Manning was
sacked after being gifted with great field position by Derrick Ward. They got
their act together, scored, and that was it for Manning this game (3-of-5 for
27 yards, 1 TD). Jared Lorenzen took over and he also led the offense to a touchdown
with his arm. Anthony Wright was up next and was sacked on his first pass attempt.
All three quarterbacks were sacked at least once this game. Derrick Ward returned
two kickoffs for 91 yards. One was that 67-yarder that set up the Giants' first
touchdown when Manning hit Shockey with
a 7 yard pass. Ward also did a nice job, running for 29 yards on 5 carries."
