Giants win their first preseason game under Tom Coughlin 34-24.
The Chiefs outplayed the Giants in the first half.
Kurt Warner was 3-of-7 for 49 yards.
Eli Manning was 7-of-13 for 91 yards.
Jesse Palmer was 3-of-6 for 37 yards and 1 TD.
Ron Dayne scored 2 touchdowns on runs of 29 and 67 yards.
Game Notes:
"If you made it to the stadium tonight, it was worth the trip. The crowd seemed a little more attentive then they usually are for a Giants preseason game, and new head coach Tom Coughlin
got the Giants off to a good start. Everyone can feel a little more comfortable seeing that Kurt Warner can still play, that Eli Manning doesn't look overwhelmed, and that Jesse Palmer looks
as comfortable on the football field as he does surrounded by a field of women and candles on a reality show.
The players on both teams made a number of mistakes which you would expect the first time out, but it was very impressive that the Giants had only 5 penalties to the Chiefs 19. That makes
you realize that Tom Coughlin will squeeze everything he can from our guys throughout the season even if they're overmatched. I'm really looking forward to seeing how we do against Carolina,
another top team next week, and hopefully to the return of Jeremy Shockey."
Game Notes:
"I'm looking forward to the whole week before next game just to see what Coughlin decides to work on. The trouble is that
every year, the Giants put themselves in a big hole by letting some key player slip away without an adequate backup. The player can be either low or medium cost. It doesn't matter.
One time it was Pete Mitchell and that was the end of tight end catches for a long while. Then it was Morten Anderson. Last year, they totally crippled the offense by letting blocking tight
end Dave Campbell get away while fielding a so-so offensive line.
Now middle linebacker Mike Barrow is gone with the apparent hope that maybe Nick Greisen, who took just five snaps on defense in 2003, could do the job. Even if Greisen could somehow take
the spot of the man who led the team in tackles in each of the Giants last three seasons, he was hurt on the second play of the game.
Anyway, don't despair. Things are in fact looking up. Last year in losing the first preseason game 26-6 to New England, the Giants committed 5 turnovers, gave up 6 sacks, and Ron Dayne had
6 carries for only 9 yards."
