Game
Notes: "The opening drive got
the Giants down to the Niners 5 yard line, but they had to settle for a field
goal on 4th and 2. I didn't know then that settling for field goals would be the
course of the game for the whole first half for both teams, but that's what happened
and it continued into the third quarter before the Giants finally broke out with
a touchdown pass to Mario Manningham for a 13-12 lead. I was glad to see early
on that the Giants could run on the Niners tough defensive unit but was also unhappy
that their quarterback, Alex Smith, could throw on ours. Sure it was great that
our defense could stop the Niners running game, but at what cost? I have to
say that Mikefan called it in his game preview 'The Giants are gearing up for
Frank Gore's rushing attack, even changing some personnel on their defense. Gore
was hurt last week and this could be a spot for the Niners to break out with a
clever passing strategy knowing they might catch the Giants literally 'flat-footed'
in that area. At some point the 49ers need to see if they can manage a more balanced
run-pass offense that can take them somewhere in the playoffs as they move forward.
Could this be the week?' Well this was the week and San Francisco was able to
make it stick!"
Game Notes:
"Losing Michael Boley in the first half
was a big blow. He's a great influence, relaying calls into the huddle, and this
week especially so since the Giants were fielding rookie Greg Jones, expecting
to see a lot of runs coming their way. Aside from the obvious mistakes made by
the special teams unit, I would say it was a big reason the Giants lost this one.
As to San Francisco's pass oriented game switch, I'd say if the head coach is
calling his untested quarterback 'elite' to the press in the week right before
the game, you should guess that he might be excited about his plans. That's one
of the reasons I mentioned it in the
game preview. At the end of the half, Eli Manning was 13 of 18 for 121 yards
and 1 Interception and Alex Smith was every bit matching him, 12 of 17 for 151
yards and 1 interception. Smith had also done the major running for the Niners.
Running back Frank Gore had zero yards on 6 carries, and Smith had 2 scrambles
for 26 yards. Gore became a non factor and his team record of five straight games
with 100 yards rushing ended because he later suffered a knee injury. Gore
was replaced by Kendall Hunter who was actually more effective, and Alex Smith
kept his team moving. They scored two touchdowns to the Giants one in the last
quarter as Eli Manning can't always lead the team to a come from behind victory
in every game that's played. He sure tried his best making a 4th and 5 and then
a 4th and 2 before falling short on the 49ers 10 yard line on yet another 4th
and 2 when the ball was batted down." Scoring:
