Game
Notes: "The Giants wanted to get back
to basics, but from the start things went, well basically wrong. There was a poor
return on the opening kickoff which then included a penalty so the Giants started
out on their own 11 yard line. They moved the ball downfield , but failed to make
a 2nd-and-2 and then a 3rd-and-1 and capped that off with a strange failed field
goal attempt that was fumbled by Jeff Feagles and recovered by the Chargers. On
their next drive Eli Manning had one of his usual delay of game penalties. Kevin
Dockery had a false start which led to Jeff Feagles kicking a short punt out of
bounds. San Diego took advantage of good field position to score their first touchdown
for a 7-0 lead. The Giants next possession took over 10 minutes and included
a few sacks on Eli Manning and a fumble recovered by S.O'Hara, a few penalties,
but it ended with a touchdown pass to Steve Smith. Not much happened after that
so the game was tied 7-7 at the half and were you thinking 'Wow, this is really
good Giants football being played! I mean Eli Manning was sacked 5 times in this
game. I guess on the plus side I was thinking his feet must be just fine because
he had to use them all day to stay alive. The Giants defense seemed to hold
up pretty well over the course of this game. They held the Chargers to just 34
yards rushing, but at the end they looked like any old hack team playing a prevent
defense and they ended up with the usual results from that. They gave up the go
ahead touchdown and lost the game. With four straight losses I think even the
fans are looking forward to a bye week at this point."
Game Notes:
"So if this was a must-win game
as some of the Giants have stated, they have failed.
They now have four straight losses, which is an unusual circumstance under Tom
Coughlin's coaching. It's actually a saving grace that there is a bye week coming
up, because some things went well and now there's time to look over what went
wrong to cost them this game. Some of the numbers were actually fairly decent.
Eli Manning had 2 touchdowns, no interceptions and a 112.6 quarterback rating,
actually higher than Philip Rivers with his 3 touchdowns but 2 interceptions and
a 86.5 rating. If you remember, Manning had thrown 6 interceptions in the past
three games of this Giants losing streak. The Giants have their best shot at winning
when the running game allows Eli Manning to pick the best times to throw, and
that was showing at various times here, mostly when Brandon Jacobs had the ball.
Jacobs averaged 6.1 yards a carry on his 11 runs. It's too bad that Ahmad Bradshaw
wasn't as effective with only 39 yards on his 14 carries. Look
at it this way, the Giants were ahead in this game with not much time left. Things
were looking good for awhile and you haven't seen very much of that from the Giants
over the past few games. There's a bye week to recover so Giant fans, just relax
and think good thoughts. After all, a 5-4 team can finish the season with a 12-4
record." Early
