Game
Notes: "Wow, it wasn't Super
Bowl XLII, but it sure felt like it! These teams played each other tight and I
didn't think I'd ever be pleased watching a game where my team had been shut out
in the first half, but it was somewhat OK since their opponent, one of the highest
scoring offenses in the league, was also scoreless. I knew our offense would have
some problems scoring since they were playing without Ahmad Bradshaw, top receiver
Hakeem Nicks and our center David Baas. On defense Michael Boley stopped one of
Tom Brady's drives cold at about our 30 yard line by tipping his pass so Mathias
Kiwanuka could intercept it. The Patriots had one more shot right at the end of
the half but their kicker, Stephen Gostkowski, missed on a 27-yard field goal.
Who would have guessed it would be 0-0 at the half? With Bradshaw out, Brandon
Jacobs had to step up this week and he did. Coming into this game Jacobs had only
42 carries for 126 yards and he added 18 more for 72 yards, including his 10 yard
touchdown run. He also was a good outlet for Manning to check down to, catching
4 passes for 28 yards, so he did his part for the offense. The defense had to
contend with Tom Brady throwing to Wes Welker and Rob Gronkowski and they were
a handful. They each had 100 yard games. The lead changed hands a few times in
the fourth quarter until Jake Ballard pulled in the winning touchdown. You have
to love that guy. He took hard hits early on but he hit back hard on that last
winning drive with two catches, one for 28 yards on a 3rd down and 10, and the
next on 3rd and 1 for the touchdown."
Game Notes:
"The Giants took away all the Patriots
marbles again. They nailed the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII to put an end to their
almost perfect unbeaten super season. This time the Patriots records included
winning 20 straight home games during the regular season, and Tom Brady winning
31 straight home starts during the regular season. It's all past history now and
it started with the teams meeting up for the first time since that Super Bowl
game. By nature of an interception by the Giants defense and a missed field goal
by New England, the Giants held the Patriots scoreless for the first half. Unfortunately
the Giants weren't able to put up any points of their own. Tom Brady was doing
better than Eli Manning with his completions except for his batted ball interception.
He was 13 of 19 for 134 yards while Manning completed just 8 of his 18 passes
against what was supposed to be a defense that was ranked last in that area. Both
quarterback ratings were well below the 100+ they were sporting at that point.
With time of possession about equal and both teams combining to convert just 3
out of 14 third down plays they tackled, you still had to give the edge to the
Patriots for threatening to score twice. Threats turned to reality in the
second half of this game for both teams and increased from the third to the fourth
quarter. It included 5 touchdowns and 3 field goals with the Giants finally winning
the come-from-behind battle. The Giants had the lead. New England tied it and
then went ahead. The Giants took the lead and then New England went ahead again.
The Giants took the lead and with 36 seconds New England had no chance. The Giants
pulled off the win and even though the
Patriots had held opponents to under 100 rushing yards in six of their seven games,
the Giants hit them for 111 in this one. It's a minor stat, but it's kind of amusing
that Eli Manning gained 11 of those yards with his three scrambles. So
the Giants got their act together today and maybe they won't experience a third
straight second-half collapse. They played without their top receiver Hakeem Nicks
because of a strained hamstring, and Mario Manningham, Victor Cruz and Jake Ballard
all stepped up. They were without their
top rusher Ahmad Bradshaw with a stress fracture in his foot and Brandon Jacobs
filled in nicely. Center David Baas was out and somehow they managed to still
beat a tough opponent. The Giants schedule from here on out doesn't get any easier
with the 49ers (7-1), Saints (6-3) and Packers (8-0) coming up, along with those
troublesome division games. Maybe the Giants are up to it this year." Scoring:
