Game
Notes: "When
was the last time the Giants started off a game with a first down pass completion
to Jeremy Shockey? That was an instant crowd pleaser, and it only got better when
Eli Manning used up most of the first quarter guiding the offense downfield. He
handed off to Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward. Manning threw completions to Plaxico
Burress, and Jacobs, managed to pull the overeager Niner defense offsides twice,
and then finished the drive with a nice touchdown pass to Amani Toomer. It
was a great opening drive, and the fans really had a lot to cheer about at the
stadium today. I mean, there were lots of sacks by the defense, two interceptions,
a forced fumble and even Osi Umenyiora recovering one and running it down the
field for a touchdown. Eli Manning threw another touchdown pass to Jeremy Shockey,
but one of the biggest cheers went up when Lawrence
Tynes made an extra point kick after missing the first one. You have to wonder
that based on what we've seen this season, and if he's actually still around to
make that trip to Europe this week, if the Giants will be buying him a return
ticket."
Game
Notes: "The Giants won this
game, but they certainly gave San Francisco a number of chances to get back into
the game. Penalties can happen, but someone like Antonio Pierce coming up with
two big dumb penalties? The first was a 15 yard 'Roughing the Passer' called on
Pierce when the 49ers needed a long 15 yards for a first down. They continued
their march downfield and came away with a touchdown that put them up 7-6 on the
Giants. The next one on Pierce was for 'Unnecessary Roughness' when Trent
Dilfer was already down, team sacked into the turf by both Strahan and Tuck. It
would have been 4th down and 14, but Pierce handed them a first down at the Giants
15 yard line. Lucky for him that Osi Umenyiora sacked Dilfer on the next play,
recovered his fumble and ran it back 75 yards for a touchdown. I hate to be
a downer after a win, and probably the Giants can play sloppy next week and still
beat the 0-7 Miami Dolphins, but missed extra points, blocked punts and foolish
penalties won't win you games against some of the tougher competition coming up
for the Giants." Early
