Game
Notes: "Boy, was it windy! You would
have thought that both teams would have done everything they could to keep the
ball on the ground, but the defenses were so tough against the run that they had
to air the ball out. Surprisingly there were no interceptions, but there were
a lot of incompletions. The Giants were lucky to score first, and our defense
was so good that Tampa Bay was 3 and out for most of the first half. I found myself
cheering a lot because they were doing so well, but then I realized that for all
the action on the field, they weren't putting this game away. At the half the
Giants had the lead, but it was only 14-3, and well within reach of Tampa Bay
since they were somehow able to naturalize Tiki Barber. The Bucs did better
in the second half, but throughout the game, Eli Manning kept hitting Plaxico
Burress, and the clock was on the Giants side. Brandon Jacobs kept things exciting
with his power rushing, and brash attitude, even though it cost them 15 yards.
In the end, it was a good day for the Giants, their fans, and all the former giants
who were on hand for Giants Alumni Day."
Game Notes:
"Last week the Bucs beat the Eagles 23-21
even though they gave up 506 total yards to their own 196. This week they held
the Giants to less than half the yards they gave up against the Eagles (251),
but still lost 17-3. Unlike last week, Ronde Barber forgot to come up with two
interception returns for touchdowns, and Matt Bryant never got a shot at a second
long field goal, although he did account for their 3 points, nailing a 43 yard
attempt in the swirling winds of Giants Stadium. Even with a few starters
out, the Giants defense was tough on the Bucs, and Tampa Bay rushed for only 40
yards. Their rookie quarterback, Bruce Gradkowski, threw a number of passes that
could have hurt big time if his receivers were able to hang on to them. That would
have been Tampa Bay's only chance at winning this game, a few lucky catches, and
a few breaks here and there. They never backed down, but the Giants were the better
team." Early Stats:

Notes: Giants
have won six of their last seven home games against Tampa Bay. Giants
have won the last 10 games in which they scored first. Giants
rookie Mathias Kiwanuka got his first career sack in his first career start.
Kiwanuka also forced a fumble and finished with six tackles. This
was Giants Alumni Day, and the Giants recognized the 50th anniversary of the 1956
NFL championship team. Twelve players from that team were on the field and introduced
to the crowd at halftime: Ben Agajanian, Frank Gifford, Herb Rich, Alex Webster,
Ray Beck, Sam Huff, Gerald Huth, Ken McAfee, Andy Robustelli, Harland Svare, Bob
Schnelker and Cliff Livinston. Also on hand was trainer John Johnson, who still
works every day in his 58th season with the team. The 1956 team was Wellington
Mara's favorite. The championship ring from that season was the only one he wore.
His son, Giants president John Mara, now wears that ring. Approximately 60 former
Giants were introduced as they walked onto the field at the half, including Hall
of Famer Harry Carson, Joe Morris, Ottis Anderson, Brad Van Pelt and Howard Cross.
