Game
Notes: "This is not one of
those games you want to file a report on. The Giants held the Eagles to only 7
points in the entire second half. Unfortunately that's only half the story. They
both started off knowing that the Cowboys had already won playing against the
Seahawks. The Eagles saw the Cowboys go ahead of them in the standings and they
came out strong. The Giants did not look at all like the team we saw last week
and they were pounded on both offense and defense. By the time the half was over,
the Eagles had a commanding 20-0 lead. The Giants got the ball to start the
second half and I was hopeful they would have made some adjustments, but they
went three and out. The Eagles got their turn and things were looking up when
Zack Bowman intercepted Nick Foles pass and the Giants ended up with the ball
at the Eagles 21 yard line. Andre Williams ran twice then Eli Manning hit Larry
Donnell with a 15 yard touchdown pass. That could have been the start of a comeback,
but the touchdown was called back for an offensive holding penalty and moved the
Giants back to the 25. Manning picked up 18 yards right away with Beckham's
second catch of the game. Three plays later he connected with Victor Cruz from
the six yard line and now it was fourth down and 3 yards short of the goaline.
The Giants were behind by 20 points and went for it. Manning tried to hit Cruz
in the endzone, but he collapsed while reaching for the ball with what looks to
be a season ending injury. It's still hard to get that image from my mind of him
laying on the ground clutching his knee in pain in the corner of the endzone.
If only that offensive holding penalty
didn't happen, if only Cruz had gotten to the endzone on his previous play, if
only the Giants had settled for a field goal instead of a touchdown, if, if, if.
Those kind of thoughts and the players concern for Victor Cruz probably affected
the Giants, because right after, Foles was able to march his team 97 yards in
just 7 plays to score a touchdown. Maybe it's no coincidence that Foles threw
his longest pass and LeSean McCoy had his longest run on that drive. After that
the Giants defense never let the Eagles cross into Giants territory, but the offense
hadn't been effective all game. Now, especially without Cruz, they couldn't stay
on the field. The Giants have a lot of work to do if they expect to beat the Cowboys
next week."
Game Notes:
"It was a big weekend for all the division teams. With
the Eagles winning tonight and the Giants taking a loss, coupled with the Cowboys
winning their game in Seattle over the Seahawks, things couldn't be any worse.
The Giants are now two games behind Philadelphia and Dallas in the NFC East after
seeing their top running back, Rashad Jennings, go down last week and today losing
Victor Cruz, their best wide receiver, for the season. The offensive line was
overwhelmed by the Eagles and Eli Manning was sacked six times. It's hard to understand
considering that they had scored more than 30 points in each of the last three
games. Running back Andre Williams was making his first start and maybe needs
better blocking to achieve what Jennings can do, but it was ridiculous that Manning
was attacked as much as he was. You do have to give a bit of credit to the
Eagles secondary. They were up against the best receivers the Giants have had
going this season and still Manning wasn't able to get rid of the ball as quickly
as we've seen. The Eagles defense was well coached and ready for these Giants
when they showed up. Meanwhile the
Giants defense let LeSean McCoy pick up 36 yards with just four carries on the
opening drive. That's more yardage than he's had in two of his games this season.
McCoy had 85 yards by halftime, which
was more than he has had in any one game. Cornerback
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie played for the first time in Philadelphia against
his old team. Unfortunately he had to leave the game early suffering from back
spasms. One strange thing, and yes,
it was all garbage time at that point, but In the last two minutes the Giants
substituted Ryan Nassib for Manning. Nassib started at his own 6 yard line and
after just one running play for 4 yards by Peyton Hillis, he somehow got the Giants
down to the Eagles 24 yard line after fumbling and being sacked 3 times (one called
back for a penalty) during that last unbalanced crazy drive of the game. So
what do the Giants do now? They have to figure out how the Eagles were so well
prepared for them and maybe their game plan or other teams can do the same. This
is big especially with the Cowboys coming up. Another division loss there puts
them three games back to the Cowboys and two and a half behind the Eagles, on
a bye week, and they will have to be hoping for those teams to self destruct on
their own."
