Game
Notes: "Where to start? The
Giants were mostly keeping step with the Bears and had opportunities to move ahead,
but they just couldn't do it. I think the offensive line looks like they've progressed
a bit from last week. Eli Manning was sacked only once, same as then, but looked
more comfortable out there. Also they were able to get a running game going for
the first time this year using Brandon Jacobs who ran for over a hundred yards.
The offense was moving the ball, making 3rd down plays and continuing drives
and had the score tied 14-14 in the second quarter. Then the Bears put a drive
together for a touchdown, unfortunately that was followed by the Giants going
three and out. It gave the Bears time for one more shot before halftime and they
added a field goal to make it 24-14. The defense could have done a better job
with the pass rush and coverage. They barely laid a finger on Jay Cutler and he
had time to hit his top receiver Brandon Marshall over and over. It also hurt
every time I saw Cutler complete a pass to our old friend Martellus Bennett. Both
those guys completed nearly every pass thrown their way, and running back Matt
Forte caught all six of his. Cutler completed 21 of his total 24 passes to them.
The Giants managed to close the gap near the end and gave me some hope, but once
again it wasn't enough."
Game Notes: "The
Giants put forth a good effort, made some mistakes, and as usual mistakes lead
to losses. The Bears didn't exactly blow the Giants away in this game, and the
Giants even got past another early interception by Eli Manning (his first one)
without losing any points. They weren't as lucky with his second one. Manning
and Rueben Randle weren't on the same page and this interception was returned
48 yards for a touchdown. At that point Manning had two possessions and he had
thrown two interceptions. Despite the early mistakes, it
got down to the fourth quarter with the Giants trailing 27-21. There was little
more than five minutes left and the Giants had the ball at their own 11 yard line.
The stage was set for Eli Manning to pull off a game winning drive like he used
to do in his 'elite' days. They moved the ball, got a first down on the Chicago
36, and Brandon Jacobs gained 1 yard. Manning then threw a pass that was a bit
high and it was intercepted when it bounced off the fingertips of tight end Brandon
Myers. With less than 2 minutes to play the Bears needed only one first down
to make sure the Giants never got the ball back and they did that. That last drive
was one the Giants really needed to complete. It was the one they needed to feel
they could do it again like they used to, and maybe would have given them their
first win of the season and offer some hope. Right now with ten days off before
they play again in a home game against Minnesota, they have none." Final
thoughts - Tight end Brandon Myers stands 6'3" and Manning saw fit to throw
just one pass his way in the entire game for an incompletion/interception. Former
Giant, 6' 6" Martellus Bennett, now playing for Chicago, was targeted by
Manning last year more times than he ever was in his career and Jay Cutler is
using him even more. Maybe, just maybe, Bennett would have made that catch (and
a few others). Maybe the Giants would have gotten their first or even second win.
Maybe General Manager Jerry Reese is busy right now thinking about what games
are worth when he spends his cash."
