Game
Notes: "The Giants caught a
good break on the very first play of the game. It was so windy at the stadium
that Buffalo's kickoff went sailing out of bounds and the Giants started at the
40 yard line. However, they caught a bad break when on the very next play Bear
Pascoe got a holding call and cost them ten yards. The Giants went 3-and-out,
but the defense held up against the Bills first drive and Eli Manning had our
offense working the field. Helped by 2 really nice catches by tight end Jake Ballard,
the second one for 24 yards to the Bills 1, and by Ahmad Bradshaw who went in
for the touchdown, the Giants scored first. The Bills tied it up and the score
went back and forth and was tied 17-17 at halftime This was pretty good at this
point because the Giants had given up some really big plays. I felt if they got
things under control they would be able to win this one, and they did, but they
didn't make it easy. They went ahead in the third quarter on another one yard
touchdown run by Bradshaw after Mario Manningham was considered down just short
of making it. Of course the Bills tied it up again in the fourth quarter and
with less than two minutes to play, the Giants got a first down on the Bills 7
yard line. Bradshaw took it to the one on the next play and that was everything
you could want at that point. Of course (yes I 'll say that again) they settled
for a field goal and just a 3 point lead, leaving 1:35 on the clock and a chance
for Buffalo to maybe tie it up or worse steal the game away. Luckily the defense
had them four and out and all the fans could leave the stadium to go home happy
today."
Game Notes:
"The Giants were on the wrong side of
some records being broken today, but they still managed to win this game. The
defense got beaten badly early on when Fred Jackson burst loose for an 80 yard
touchdown run. The next series had Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick passing
the ball to Naaman Roosevelt and he ran it for a 60 yards touchdown. They settled
down after that and were even able to sack Fitzpatrick three times which was equal
to the total amount he was sacked in the previous five games. They intercepted
him twice and both were by Corey Webster making the plays. Getting back to the
run defense, Fred Jackson's 16 carries for 121 yards and 1 touchdown is very impressive,
but if they had managed to corral one of the NFL's leading rushers on that one
play, it becomes something more ordinary like 15 carries for 41 yards. That in
fact were the rest of Jackson's running numbers on the day. Giving credit as well,
he also caught five passes for 47 yards. On
offense, Eli Manning was on target this game hitting his receivers with 21 passes
on 32 attempts, and must important against this takeaway leading Buffalo team,
no interceptions. Manning had no touchdown passes, but Mario Manningham came close
to that twice. It was a tight game and 3rd down efficiency was at 5 of 11. Even
one miscue would have made the difference today. Tight end Jake Ballard continues
to impress and his five catches for 81 yards certainly helps this offense. Ahmad
Bradshaw will get a lot of press with his 104 yards and 3 touchdowns, all coincidentally
1 yard runs for the score. However the Giants caught a big break in that Buffalo's
pro bowl nose tackle, Kyle Williams, was not in this game. Overall
on weaknesses to date, the defense showed improvement and the running game still
isn't there. Coaching wasn't that smart when they decided to pass with 1:40 left
down at the Bills 5 on third down. They tried to surprise the Bills with a passing
play, which could have been intercepted - luckily it was just knocked down. Better
suited would have been some creative misdirection running play that would have
kept the ball in the hands of the offense. They needed to make sure they didn't
turn over the ball and to score a field goal on the next play and break the tie.
It would have been less dangerous and caused the Bills to use another timeout.
Giants fans should remember to temper
any excitement with the fact the team just barely won a game against another team
that ranks near last in the NFL on defense. More work needs to be done and the
Giants now have a bye week of extra time to prepare for Miami. Scoring:
