Game
Notes: "Having tickets to the
game today was a super luxury considering that the TV broadcast wasn't provided
for viewing as it usually is due to a dispute between the network and cable carrier.
On the other hand, there were some things you were better off not seeing and that
started almost right away. In the first three minutes Eli Manning was sacked once
and Matt Dodge fumbled his first punt attempt. Detroit got that ball at the Giants
43 yard line and made the Giants pay, finishing off their drive with a 14 yard
touchdown pass. So the Lions were on the board first and you got a feeling
that this might be one of those games that the Giants should win but maybe wouldn't.
Fortunately there were a number of plays you enjoyed seeing first hand as the
Giants made the Lions pay for their mistakes as well. If that didn't happen, the
outcome might not have been the same because the Lions were very competitive.
They weren't discouraged when their quarterback Shaun Hill was knocked out of
the game or when Zack Follett was unfortunately hurt and taken off the field on
a stretcher later in the game. Even in the fourth quarter near the Lions 13
yard line when Osi Umenyiora picked up his second sack and his second forced fumble,
they kept at it and soon had the ball at midfield. Their third string quarterback,
Drew Stanton, had them driving and they were only down by four points. That's
when they made another mistake they couldn't afford. A pass from Stanton to receiver
Nate Burleson was fumbled as he was taken down by safety Deon Grant around the
Giants 42 yard line. The Giants capitalized and drove down for a touchdown
and a more comfortable 28-17 lead with about only three and a half minutes left
to play. Still, a fifty yard Lions field goal soon tuned an 11 point lead into
a 28-20 one-score lead and the Giants went three and out. The Lions made another
mistake on the punt return that cost them 15 yards or they would have had the
ball at their 29 yard line. They got as far as the Giants
38 yard line when Stanton's throw was intercepted by Antrel Rolle at the 16. The
Giants won this one, but the Lions help was certainly appreciated. Washington
has to deal with this feisty group in Detroit after they rest up and get some
additional coaching on their bye week."
Game
Notes: "
Detroit did an impressive job containing Hakeem Nicks but you can't have it all.
This week Manning made no mistakes trying to force things. He threw for two scores
and had no interceptions. He simply looked into his 'receiver treasure chest'
and came up with Steve Smith who he targeted for 6 passes that totaled 70 yards,
and Mario Manningham who caught 4 passes for 51 yards and one touchdown. It
helped him of course that the offensive line was effective, allowing the game
to be better balanced with both the run and pass. Bear Pascoe has developed into
a fine lead blocker for the running game. Ahmad Bradshaw rushed for 133 yards
on 19 carries and Brandon Jacobs had 9 carries for 35 yards and picked up two
touchdowns on his runs. On the Lions last drive of the first half, the defense
knocked quarterback Shaun Hill out of the game on a hit by Barry Cofield. Third
string quarterback Drew Stanton came in, and a long 50 yard field goal cut the
Giants lead to 14-10 at halftime. Stanton looked impressive on the field and he
kept the Lions in the game. He hit Calvin Johnson for an 87 yard touchdown in
the fourth quarter to make the score 21-17 and then got it to 28-20 after the
Giants scored again. Then Stanton tried to engineer a last minute hurry up drive
to tie the game, but that fell short when he was intercepted by Antrel Rolle at
the 16 yard line. Matt Dodge put
his team in the hole at the start but you have to give him credit for being able
to shake it off and be productive over the rest of the game. And so, the Giants
won today and that's great, but the level of competition goes up next week. Division
teams have no mercy on each other. Win-loss records going into next week's big
Monday night matchup with the Cowboys won't matter. The Giants are fighting to
be at the top of the division and the Cowboys are dead last. There is a lot to
lose in this next game coming up. Scoring:
