Notes: "They said this would be a
sort of 'homecoming' for Eli Manning, who was raised a Saints fan but had never
played in the Superdome. Well Saints head coach Sean Payton didn't use up his
bye week planning any parades for Eli and there wasn't a lot of welcoming confetti
being thrown around on the field. The Saints buckled down and worked out their
game plan and hit the Giants hard from the opening bell. They never let up and
had a 34-17 lead by the end of the half. It was a half that saw Drew Brees
at his best, completing 17 of his 20 passes for 247 yards and 3 touchdowns. Former
Giant Jeremy Shockey was in there with 3 of his catches going for first downs
and then one other for a touchdown. Boy it's tough not to root for that guy after
watching him play for the Giants for so many years. The Giants somehow made that
easier as Shockey sort of disappeared in the second half and he had no more catches.
It was a small victory for the Giants defense however as the Saints were able
to score touchdowns two more times and they kept this game out of reach. The
good things to take away are that the Giants lost to maybe the current best team
in the NFC. Eli Manning didn't seem to be troubled at all by his foot injury,
and guess what? With all said and done, the Giants are 5-1 and still on top of
the NFC East.
Game Notes:
"Well the Saints once again pulled
off their usual offensive big-play magic. While Drew Brees was making the Statue
of Liberty, or in this case the Giants defense, disappear, Eli Manning was reduced
to attempting cheap parlor tricks with marked cards, easily read by the Saints
defense who happen to shop at the same New Orleans dollar store where they all
live. Manning and his receivers were not performing well. At the half the
Giants on offense had scored 17 points off the five possessions and that one kneel-down
play they had, so they had a chance. The special teams unit had some penalties
but had come up with a blocked extra point and some nice runbacks by Domenik Hixon.
The running game was working, averaging almost five yards a carry. The big glaring
weakness was the defense allowing Drew Brees to complete on nearly every pass.
Clearly the four man rush concept was not working and it was up to defensive coordinator
Bill Sheridan to pull a rabbit out of his hat, but unfortunately Michael Boley,
Kenny Phillips, and Aaron Ross were not backstage. At one point in the third
quarter I thought things were about to change. Brees felt some pressure and his
offense seemed off balance. He threw a pass into the dirt. Bell picked up three
yards and then Brees lined up and called a timeout. Next they went offsides and
drew a penalty. Brees threw a pass to Marques Colston to the Giants 5 for 31 yards,
but he had stepped out of bounds before his catch and that cost the Saints five
more yards. Things were going the Giants way but now facing a 3rd and 17, Brees
threw a 22 yard completion to Lance Moore and a few plays later a touchdown pass
and the score went to 41-17. Everyone could see that the Giants were out of tricks
now, and while the defense did hold
them to only one touchdown in each of the last two quarters, the offense couldn't
catch up. This wasn't the Bucs, Chiefs and Raiders the Giants were playing
against. They were up against the best offense in the league and it showed. If
the Giants just stumbled here and weren't just all smoke and mirrors in the first
five games, they will have to prove it with their next performance in Giants Stadium
against Arizona on Oct 25. Early
