Giants win over the Jets 35-24. Eli Manning was 13-of-25 for 186 yards, 2
TD and 1 INT. Brandon Jacobs rushed for 100 yards on 20 carries and 1 touchdown.
Derrick Ward rushed for 56 yards on 13 carries and 1 touchdown and caught 3 passes
for 8 yards. Reuben Droughns rushed for 15 yards on 2 carries. Plaxico Burress
caught 5 passes for 124 yards and 1 touchdown. Jeremy Shockey caught 2 passes
for 33 yards and 1 touchdown. Sam Madison had a 2nd-quarter interception. Aaron
Ross had 2 interceptions in the second half. Osi Umenyiora had 1 sack.
Game
Notes: "There
was a nice mix of Giant and Jet fans at this game. Neither team looked very effective
on offense in the first quarter. The Jets scored first, but that was only because
their defense picked up a fumble by Brandon Jacobs and they ran it in for a touchdown.
The Jets tried a 42 yard field goal the next time they got the ball, but it missed.
Taking over, the Giants had good field position, but Eli Manning had to scramble
for six yards. Derrick Ward lost 4 yards on his run to end the first quarter.
On the next play, Manning scrambled for 13 yards, and that was how they got their
first first down of the game. The offense started to play a bit better after
that, running Brandon Jacobs, passing to Shockey and running Derrick Ward, and
they finished this drive with a 3 yard touchdown run by Ward to tie the score
at 7-7. Sam Madison killed off the Jets next drive when he intercepted Chad Pennington
and ran the ball back 25 yards, but the offense wasn't able to do much with that
opportunity. Then it came down to the Jets having the ball with a little over
two minutes left in the half. Pennington worked his no huddle-shotgun magic for
the Jet fans. The Giants defense couldn't get to him, and in nine quick plays
the Jets had another touchdown. Now at the Giants 20 yard line with only 28
seconds left, and with many of the fans headed off for refreshments, Eli Manning
decided to toss a short pass to, I think, Amani Toomer and was intercepted. The
Jets turned that into a 47 yard field goal to pad their score 17-7, and things
weren't looking good at all for the Giants they way they were playing. Luckily
the Giants got their act together in the second half. They scored 28 points to
the Jets 7 by wearing the Jets defense down with Ward and Jacobs. On defense,
cornerback Aaron Ross was the big hero with 2 interceptions on Pennington, and
Osi Umenyiora got the only sack of the game near the end of the fourth quarter."
Game
Notes: "As
we said in the game preview, both the Giants and Jets are slow starters, and their
respective offenses saved all their action for the last three quarters, and if
you came looking for sacks you were watching the wrong game. The Giants went all
the way down from twelve sacks against Philadelphia last week to just one against
the Jets, but they did get to put up a big one in the win column. The Giants were
in the hole at the end of the first half, but 10 of those Jets 17 points came
on turnovers. The Jets got 7 more points but not from the offense. It came from
a 98 yard kickoff return by Leon Washington. Once the Giants got going they
were very effective with the combination of running Derrick Ward and Brandon Jacobs.
Eli Manning's numbers looked much better by the time the game was over. At the
half, he was just 3 of 10 for 22 yards and 1 interception. Manning then went 10
of 15 for 164 yards and 2 touchdowns. The defense was aggressive and got 3 interceptions
off Chad Pennington. They allowed only one touchdown and held the Jets to only
55 yards rushing. Now it's on to Atlanta in a Monday night game, and hopefully
a faster start from the offense." Early

Notes:
Plaxico Burress has scored at least one touchdown
in every game this season. Jeremy
Shockey scored his first touchdown of the season. Amani
Toomer did not catch a pass for the first time since Dec. 31, 2005 at Oakland.
Toomer's team-record of catching at least 1 pass is 98 games (plus four postseason
games). Derrick Ward's 8-yard
touchdown run was the first rushing touchdown of his four-year career. Giants
did not allow a sack on Eli Manning. Giants
Aaron Ross came up with 2 big plays in the second half. Ross sat out the first
half for violating a team rule according to Tom Coughlin. Tom
Coughlin sat Plaxico Burress in 2005 for the 1st quarter of a 45-23 loss to the
Chargers. In 2004 cornerback Will Peterson (now William James) was benched
for the 1st quarter in an 23-22 loss to Cincinnati, and linebacker Barrett Green
against the Lions that same year. This
was the first of those games that the Giants and Tom Coughlin won. Giants
win was the 100th of Tom Coughlin’s career, including postseason games. Tom
Coughlin is 1-2 this season and 12-19 in four years with the Giants on replay
challenges. Jets Leon Washington
fielded a kickoff and returned it 98 yards for a touchdown. Washington also
had a 98 yard kickoff return against Miami two games ago. Jets
Mike Nugent missed a 37-yard field goal last week, and missed a 42-yarder today. Giants
won their 4th straight game against the Jets. Giants lead the regular season
series, 7-4. Giants have not lost to the Jets since 1993.
