Game
Notes: "The Giants sure know
how to drag the fans through super highs and lows, but finally we got to see what
they were hoping to bring to the field. They got the ball first and made a few
nice plays, but their momentum was cut short when J.J. Watt slipped past Justin
Pugh and sacked Eli Manning. The Giants defense held up, but the Texans faked
the punt on 4th-and-1 and got their first down. Great job special teams unit.
That was very disappointing, but soon after Prince Amukamara intercepted a pass
from Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Giants had the ball on their 36 yard line. It
was exciting to see the offense going no huddle and making play after play down
to the Texans 10 yard line, but that's
when tight end Larry Donnell caught a pass and then fumbled it at the 4 yard line
when he was hit. I couldn't believe it! Here we go again! Still, Manning had been
hitting on every pass and next chance, Victor Cruz takes one downfield for 61
yards. They couldn't advance it much and in the first minute of the second
quarter the Giants were going for a 30 yard field goal to finally put some points
on the board. Wrong! Long snapper Zak DeOssie rolls a grounder instead of a snap
and kicker Josh Brown is scrambling around like crazy to get control of the ball.
No field goal, no points. It took until later in the quarter for the Giants
to graduate from high school football to the pros. It included Victor Cruz's first
touchdown catch of the year, the defense sacking Fitzpatrick and Antrel Rolle
snaring an interception and taking it to the Texans 2 yard line. It took three
tries, but Jennings ran it in for a touchdown and when the quarter ended we were
up 14-0. In the third quarter, when they added another field goal to go up
17-0, I think everyone in the stadium started to feel that we were going to get
our first win. Of course the lead was cut to 17-10 by the end of the third quarter,
but early in the fourth the Giants added another field goal. The way Manning was
throwing with confidence and the way the running game was being handled by Rashad
Jennings, you got the feeling that the Texans were done. The special teams group
even blocked a punt to set up an easy touchdown for the offense. The final score
was 30-17 and being 1-2 doesn't seem
like much to be excited about, but it means a lot to me today to see the Giants
turn things around like they did."
Game Notes:
"Last week against Arizona the Giants had an edge with starting quarterback
Carson Palmer out for the game and they still lost. This week the football gods
had the Texans spot the Giants their starting running back Arian Foster. After
a few early mishaps, the Giants were able to make that work in their favor and
come away with their first win of the season.
Tom Coughlin will no longer have to answer questions about how he will be able
to fend off another 0-6 season. I can almost feel him breath a sigh of relief,
but really come on now does he ever seem to be relieved about anything? I
actually mean that as a compliment, and as far as compliments go you have to look
to the Giants offense which is showing
steady improvement. In the first half Eli Manning completed 14 of his 18 passes
for 179 yards and threw a touchdown. Rashad Jennings had 88 yards and a touchdown.
Victor Cruz had four receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown. On defense in
the first half they forced turnovers for the first time this season. Ryan Fitzpatrick
was nailed for two sacks and two interceptions and he had completed only 4 of
his 13 passes for 39 yards. The Texans failed to convert 7 times on third downs
although they did on one fourth down on their fake punt play. Jameel McClain did
a real nice job filling in for Jon Beason at middle linebacker and was even in
on one of the two sacks on Fitzpatrick. The Giants will travel to Washington
for a Thursday night game. Both teams are now 1-2 with the Redskins losing to
the Eagles today. They certainly won't want to add another division loss by dropping
a game to the Giants."
