Game Notes:
"I was as anxious as any
other Giants fan watching this game. The Giants had already dropped the
first two games and I was really hoping to see them get off to a good
fast start. They got the ball first and after two runs by David Wilson
that went for minus 2 and plus 2, Eli Manning had ten yards to cover for
a first down. Everyone knew Manning was going to pass the ball, but with
all the receivers ridiculously covered up, he did what Cam Newton would
do. Eli ran up the middle for 14 yards and got a first down.
I was amazed by that and it looked from what I saw so far that the Panthers
defense was going to over protect against both the run and the pass and
mess up quite a bit in the process. Eli then threw a pass to Henry Hynoski
that went for 5 yards. Brandon Jacobs ran for a disappointing zero yards
and then Manning was sacked.
I figured the Panthers got a little lucky, and our defense with their
turn got a sack on Cam Newton and a 3-and-out. I didn't know that at that
point I had seen just about the best the Giants had to offer. By the end
of the first half, Eli was sacked six times, and had only 6 completions,
and his one scramble accounted for 14 of the 17 yards the offense had
accumulated on the ground. Josh Brown had missed a field goal, the Giants
had no score and were down by 17 points.
Things never got much better. Eli completed only 6 more passes and added
1 interception. They pulled him late in the fourth quarter either for
his safety or his dignity and Curtis Painter took his place. He completed
2 passes and also threw an interception. The defense had one interception
but gave up 5 touchdowns and a field goal. So the Giants lost this game
bigtime, 38-0 and are now 0-3 on the season.
I'm already freaked out from
what I saw today and creepy Andy Reid is up next with that cold icy stare
of his. He's already marched his Kansas City Chiefs to wins over the Cowboys
and Eagles as he gets his revenge on the NFC East. Someone climb into
bed with me tonight, pull up the covers and shield me from everything
so I can get a good night's sleep."
Game
Notes:
"As a Giants fan you want to hope
and believe in the worst way that the results of what you saw today was
simply Chase Blackburn and Domenik Hixon clueing their new team into every
single aspect that exists in the Giants playbook. Really hope that in
some ways it was a factor, because if it's not, you have no hope for the
rest of the season. Your team scored no points, was shut out by an 0-2
team and the Giants are now 0-3 for the first time since 1996. There are
161 teams that started the season 0-3 since 1978 and only five have made
it into the playoffs. Blackburn started in place of three-time Pro Bowler
Jon Beason at weak side linebacker and Hixon caught one pass thrown his
way for 8 yards.
Hakeem Nicks was looking forward
to getting a chance to play a game in his hometown after not being able
to make the trip last year. Nicks had zero catches. Victor Cruz, the top
receiver on the team, was probably glad he wasn't playing at home. Cruz
finished up with 3 catches for 25 yards.
Rueben Randle was the top receiver tonight with 40 yards and Brandon Myers
was next with 33 yards. The
offensive line took a big step back, allowing Eli Manning to be sacked
seven times. The Giants running game, well once again there really was
none behind this line. The running backs, David Wilson, Da'Rel Scott,
and Brandon Jacobs combined for 46 yards on 15 carries. Add in Eli's 14
yards and the total of 60 is the best they've had this year.
Both teams had 11 drives, but the Panthers accumilated 27 first downs
to the Giants 10 and were the only ones to put points on the board. The
Giants went down 38-0, and it looks like coach Ron Rivera's job, which
was in question, is safe for right now. So, were his 0-2 Panthers sleeping
giants in disguise or were the Giants just sleep walking through this
entire game?"
