Game Notes:
"This was one of those
games you thought you wouldn't see for a long time from now, like maybe
when the Giants were up against the Cowboys or Eagles. It had you on pins
and needles right from the start. If you went to the stadium today, it
seemed like everything was going your way. The weather was just beautiful.
You got to see the Giants playing here on opening day with a 16-7 win
over the Redskins coming off the great Super Bowl run from last year.
They beat the Rams last week . Everyone was excited that the Giants were
2-0 and looked to be an easy 3-0 facing the down-and-out 0-2 Bengals.
Well, guess again. The Bengals were playing like a very competitive team,
scored first and had a 13-10 lead at the half. It was a 13-13 tie at the
end of the 3rd quarter, and a 23-23 tie at the end of regulation time.
The Giants won the toss, but still didn't score. They had to hold the
Bengals offense, and then when they got their next shot, they were able
to get it down to the Cincinnati 4 yard line. Even though it was a 2nd
and goal they went for the field goal, and made it. Like I said, 'Pins
and Needles' at the stadium today."
Game Notes:
"Well,
the Giants weren't amazing today. They sure didn't look like a a talented
2-0 team going up against an 0-2 team with a beat up secondary. They seemed
unwilling to throw deep and more intent on establishing the running game
before attempting to do so. The Bengals seemed intent on stopping the
run no matter what the manpower requirements, and they were able to do
so, because the stubborn Giants didn't test them downfield.
The Bengals 30th ranked defense against the run should not be able to
hold up against the Giants big mealticket - Brandon Jacobs, but by the
end of the first quarter, the Giants had no points to the Bengals 3. At
the end of the day, Brandon Jacobs had run the ball 14 times for only
35 yards. By the end of the half, the Bengals were still in the lead 13-10,
even though the Giants had 4 sacks on Carson Palmer. Derrick Ward was
the most effective running back today, but still, the Giants were down
16-13 at the start of the fourth quarter.
The lead had changed hands several times, and this was anybody's game
for the taking. The Giants started passing more as a game plan, not just
in desperation, and the game went into overtime. Here it should be noted
that the Giants on their two drives, passed the ball 9 straight times
on two possessions until they got the ball down to the Cincinnati 7 yard
line. Derrick Ward took a shot and picked up 3 yards and on a 2nd and
goal from the 4 yard line, they kicked the winning field goal. I'd say
the Giants made this game tougher than it had to be and hope that next
time they smarten up earlier when a game plan isn't working out that well."
