Notes: "The Giants had the
ball first and while they didn't score and even with Eli Manning being sacked
twice, they showed that they could move the ball making three first downs. As
a result, after they punted, the Patriots were backed up at their own 5 yard line.
That's when Tom Brady made a rookie mistake. Right - how is that possible? Well,
he was in the endzone and he threw the ball downfield to get rid of it when Justin
Tuck came at him. That resulted in an intentional grounding penalty and a safety.
That was some way for the Patriots to start a Super Bowl game, one-and-out
while giving up 2 points. It might just be me, but I felt that the Patriots looked
ill at ease and less confident than the Giants on the field tonight and that didn't
help them. They played as if they were waiting for the inevitable to happen. Losing
the last Super Bowl to the Giants and then the regular season game was clearly
on their minds. They managed to take the lead and hold it for most of the
game. Victor Cruz had that one early touchdown and then they were mostly holding
him in check, but that meant that Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham would
have more opportunities. Nicks caught most of the passes in this game, but Manningham
came away with one for the highlight reel when he made a 38 yard sideline catch
with two defenders on him. It was right in front of Bill Belichick and when
Manning rushed everyone to midfield Belichick had to waste a time out on a challenge
on the chance that maybe it was no good. It was a catch, a great catch and you
can almost know what the Patriots were thinking at that point. The Giants got
the 21-17 go ahead touchdown and had to hold the Patriots for the last minute
while the fans held their breath, and the defense held them off for the dramatic
finish. Justin Tuck finished with two sacks and even though Eli Manning was named
the MVP of the game, I have to give a big shout-out to Chase Blackburn who had
one interception and played a big part in the Giants being here tonight to play
in this game and come away with another Super Bowl trophy."
Game Notes:
"You can be a football team with an unbeaten
season (Patriots 18-0 in 2007), be the 2010 Super Bowl champions with a 15-1 season
record (Green Bay), win ten straight games (Patriots 2011), and it all means nothing
when you come up against these Giants. Give them a chance to rise to a higher
greatness, and Tom Coughlin's team - as Madonna put it at halftime - "will
take you there." Tonight the Giants finished the season with six straight
wins and that trumped the Patriots 10 victories. This one was for all the marbles
in the yearly NFL football race that leaves just one team standing tall over the
other 31 competitors. That team gets to call themselves the Super Bowl Champions.
The Giants accomplished that in what has become their typical fashion of late.
Despite taking a 9-0 lead into the second quarter, they allowed the Patriots to
take a 10-9 lead into halftime. They let the Patriots hold on to the lead
until the score was 17-15 in the fourth quarter with under four minutes to go.
That's when Eli Manning went to work, once again in this long season, with about
a three minute drive that started at his 12 yard line and ended with an Ahmad
Bradshaw 6 yard touchdown run, and awkward backwards-hesitant-sitdown in the endzone.
The hesitation was the fear that Tom Brady would be able to engineer a comeback
with the remaining 57 seconds that were left. The Giants already had a miracle
Super Bowl catch on that last drive when Eli hit Mario Manningham with a 38 yard
pass that took them to midfield. So wasn't it time to go home and celebrate with
those clowns on Giants.com who posted a victory a day too early? No, Giants.com
and all you eager fans, it's still too early. It has to come down to the last
play of the game. That's when Tom Brady tossed a Hail Mary pass with the ball
being batted up just enough to maybe allow tight end Rob Gronkowski to grab it
and snatch the victory. But wait now. It didn't happen, as the ball dropped to
the ground in the endzone. This was after all a Giants-New England game and the
Giants are the ones who make the big sensational plays, so there you go. Now,
if Madonna didn't take you there with her halftime show extravaganza, the Giants
certainly took you there, and more and all the way in this game." Scoring:
