Game
Notes: "It's always great to
watch the Giants play at home. It's too bad they couldn't come away with a win
for the fans. You're always excited to see the Giants playing in their first home
opener. They had a bad time on the road last Monday, but everyone was hoping for
much better. It didn't start out that way as the Cardinals were able to march
downfield and score a touchdown on their opening drive. The Giants responded with
an interception on theirs. The defense held the Cardinals to just a field goal
this time and it was 10-0 at the end of the quarter. Later Eli Manning managed
a real nice drive from the 10 yard line that took up the last half of the second
quarter. Rashad Jennings. Larry Donnell, Rueben Randle and Victor Cruz all contributed
and there was only one third down that Cruz picked up as they marched down the
field play after play. Randle capped the drive off with his touchdown in the endzone.
It was 10-7 and even though the Giants were trailing it was a great way to see
the half coming to an end, leaving the Cardinals with a half minute to play. There
was a nice halftime ceremony with a bunch of former Giant players and everyone
settled in for the start of the third quarter with the Giants offense on the field
and I was hoping for them to continue from where they left off. Instead we got
a three-and-out that lost four yards. After some back and forth the Giants put
a go ahead drive together that ended with a Manning one yard pass to tight end
Daniel Fells for a touchdown to put us up 14-10. The Cardinals managed to
get a field goal in the early part of the fourth quarter to make it 14-13. Boy
there sure were a lot of penalties called today by the refs. The Giants went three-and-out
and I couldn't believe it, but the Cardinals returned the punt for a touchdown
and a 19-14 lead when they failed to make the 2 point conversion. Then their kickoff
was fumbled by our return guy setting the Cardinals up for an easy field goal
and now a 22-14 lead. This game was going downhill fast. The Giants got the
ball down to the Cardinals 17 and I was thinking about how they would go about
the two point conversion to tie the game when Manning's short pass was caught
and fumbled away by Jennings with no one touching him as he just fell and lost
the ball to the Cardinals. With only four and a half minutes left a bunch of fans
started leaving. The Giants went three-and-out on their next possession and on
the following, with almost no time left, Manning threw another interception and
that was it. The Giants play again at home this Sunday and I'll hope they can
leave their big mistakes out of that one."
Game Notes:
"With Carson Palmer suddenly unable to play and the Cardinals having to make
a last minute switch to backup quarterback Drew Stanton, this should have been
a cakewalk for the Giants. Last Monday
the Cardinals worked their magic against the Chargers and came from behind with
12 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win by one point. Today against
the Giants it was 15 unanswered fourth quarter points, much more than they needed
to win 25-14. The Giants didn't deliver
at all last week, but certainly had a chance to do so today. They were catching
the Arizona Cardinals just at the right time. They were the traveling team working
on a short week and missing some defensive players, and then had to substitute
to their backup quarterback at just about game time. Suddenly Carson Palmer was
out and Drew Stanton, who hadn't thrown a regular season pass since 2010, was
in and running the starting offense. The only thing that Stanton had going for
him was getting in some good practice time while they were resting Palmer for
his injured shoulder earlier this week. Victor
Cruz put himself behind the eight ball with his comments after the loss last week.
He stated that for the Giants to be successful he needed to be targeted more.
Eli Manning delivered, but Cruz let a few crucial passes drop away and the fans
got on him. To be fair some of those were tough catches, but Cruz is the top receiver
and even he feels he should have caught more, including one drive killing drop
in the fourth quarter. This game came down to things like that. There were
a lot of if-only moments. If only Steve Weatherford's punt after Cruz's drop had
more hang time, and if only gunner Zack Bowman managed to actually hit Cardinals
returner Ted Ginn Jr. he wouldn't have gone 71 yards for a touchdown. Then Quintin
Demps had to fumble the ensuing kickoff at the Giants 21 yard line. Then, with
the Giants driving, Rashad Jennings has to slip and fall after an easy catch all
on his own and turn the ball over to the Cardinals on their own 14 yard line.
If only Rueben Randle didn't drop a deep late fourth-quarter pass on third down
the against the slight interference by Antonio Cromartie. If only, if only,
if only the Giants would stop killing themselves with stupid plays maybe they
could win next week against the Houston Texans and Tom Coughlin won't have to
answer questions about his team looking to duplicate last years 0-6 start."
