Game
Notes: "If
you made it to the stadium today, you got to see a great quarterback play the
game and what looks to be another in the making. Brett Favre won the 149th game
of his long career, and that might not have happened if Eli Manning's performance
wasn't degraded by some of his own teammates along the way. Manning is great to
watch in person, and you can almost feel the attitude difference in Eli from the
previous years. There were a lot of highs and lows in this game. On the first
play of the game, Jeremy Shockey caught the first pass for 19 yards. Derrick Ward
ran for 19 yards on the next play. The refs added on 15 more yards for roughing
up Plaxico, and already the Giants were at the Green Bay 18 yard line. Forgetting
that Derrick Ward isn't really Tiki Barber, they ran him on the next two plays
and passed to him on the next for a total gain of just 2 yards. Tynes 34 yard
field goal try on a bad snap missed and the Giants came away with no points. Other
highs and lows were Green Bay missing a field goal on their next possession. Gibril
Wilson running into their kicker in the 2nd quarter followed by Gibril Wilson
intercepting Brett Favre on the very next play. Eli Manning completing a pass
to Amani Toomer for 40 yards followed by a 26 yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress
to tie the score at 7-7. Following that, Shockey caught a 19 yard pass, and a
14 yard pass for a first down at the Green Bay 16 yard line, but it got taken
away when he punch-spiked the ball to the ground. The Giants had to settle for
a field goal and a 10-7 lead at the half. The Packers went ahead 14-10 on their
first possession in the 3rd quarter, helped along by a Sam Madison penalty. There
was a gutsy 25 yard punt return by Reuben Droughns. Derrick Ward ran for 26 yards
even after taking a good hit. A penalty on Amani Toomer killed this drive, and
Tynes kicked a field goal to cut Green Bay's lead to 14-13. Brett Favre went 9-9
for 75 yards and and his touchdown pass made it 21-13. The Giants fumbled the
kickoff, and Brett Favre took over at the Giants 22 yard line and soon threw for
another touchdown (28-13). With about seven minutes left in the game, Eli Manning
got the Giants down to the Packers 33 yard line, but was intercepted while throwing
the ball away. After Green Bay's next touchdown (35-13) Jared Lorenzen came
in, and after he was roughed up, Anthony Wright came in and that was it."
Game
Notes: "On
the positive side, Eli Manning looked healthy despite all the shoulder concerns
and he played like he was in midseason form. On the downside, some of the veteran
guys he should count on played like rookies. Names like Jeremy Shockey, Amani
Toomer, and Plaxico Burress all drew penalties that hurt. On defense, 'We are
going to improve,' Giants coach Tom Coughlin said earlier this week. "We are going
to play better this week and we are going to put ourselves into position to have
a chance to play good solid defense again." Well, the defense only gave
up 35 points this game instead of 45 the week earlier, so I guess you could call
that an improvement. Osi Umenyiora was back in the lineup, and Michael Strahan
had an extra week to get back in football shape, but Strahan was credited with
1 tackle compared to 4 tackles and 1 assist last week. Strahan didn't announce
his retirement in the offseason, but is he retired now? Maybe he was too much
in awe of being on the same field as Brett Favre. "He's the most competitive,
I wouldn't say quarterback, I'd say football player out there," Michael Strahan
said earlier this week. Here's some more numbers that are hard to take: Record
through 4 games (% of teams in playoffs) 0-4 (1.8%), 1-3 (15.8%), 2-2 (35.6%),
3-1 (65.2%), 4-0 (83.7%). Looking ahead, the Giants will be catching Washington
coming off a short week next Sunday. Maybe Tom Coughlin will have the defense
improve even more, and maybe Eli Manning's core group will play like veterans.

Notes:
Brett Favre now has 149 wins in his 17-year career, one more than Hall of Famer
John Elway. Brett Favre completed his first 14 passes of the second half. This
Giants loss was the second straight, something that hasn't happened at the start
of a season since 1996 -- the year Dan Reeves got fired. This
is the first time the Giants have given up at least 35 points in back-to-back
games since 1973. Next
