Notes: "First off, let me say
how excited I am and also how exhausted I am after watching this game! You live
and die with this team and you know what? The way they play their hearts out they
deserve every bit of fan appreciation you can give them, and I for one would like
to throw out kisses to Devin Thomas for making those two fumble recoveries.
I knew that the San Francisco team was real good from the last time we played
them, but their defense seemed even better today. They were so good against the
run that they could anticipate Eli Manning passing, and they gave him a real rough
time. Victor Cruz was effective against them in the first half, but somehow they
figured out how to shut him down in the second. We were lucky that the defense
was able to hold San Francisco to just 17 points, mostly off just two big plays,
and that the special teams unit was able to come up big when they needed it.
You know there's always something extra exciting happening in a Giants game and
of course this time it was being one of the first playoff teams to try out the
new overtime rules. Once again I have to thank Devin Thomas for his efforts so
we didn't have to go into double or triple overtime and of course, Lawrence Tynes
for kicking the winning field goal in overtime."
Game Notes:
"Both teams have improved since their
last go round and it was a tough battle on both sides. As expected, the Giants
couldn't run effectively on San Francisco, and you knew their defense was going
to be tough. They were so tough that Eli Manning, as elusive as he usually is,
was batted around for 6 sacks, 12 knockdowns and 20 hits. He threw the ball 53
times trying to crack the Niners defense, but sustained drives were hard to come
by especially in the second half. Luckily, except for two big plays, the Giants
defense was able to reduce Alex Simth to the kind of quarterback he was for most
of the season compared to how effective he was last week against the Saints. He
was able to convert on only 1 third down play out of 13. In the end, either team
could have won this game dominated by both defenses, but the Giants special teams
unit came up big and the Giants take home the prize. San
Francisco's main weakness seems to be trusting Alex Smith throwing the long ball.
If you are a wide receiver you might as well sit on the bench. Michael Crabtree
had just 1 catch for 3 yards and the rest of the glory, and the catches, went
to running back Frank Gore and tight ends Kendall Hunter and Vernon Davis. Davis
had 3 catches and he made the most of it by scoring touchdowns on two of them.
Unfortunately Davis doesn't seem to handle 'glory' very well as he also pulled
in a personal foul for making too much of a big deal about one touchdown, and
got another penalty for jumping into a fight. None of that helps a team that
went so very far this season and came very close to winning against the Giants.
They have a number of good deserving players, but it seems there's still a bit
of growing up to do and that's on the head coach. Maybe a few of their fans could
do a bit better as well as it was disappointing to hear them boo when the National
Anthem was sung. That was every time the camera happened to pan on the Giants.
But hey, maybe they don't know how to behave as well as some of their players
or don't recognize which ones actually have or don't have some class." Scoring:

Notes:
Giants
Eli Manning is the first quarterback in NFL history to win 5 playoff games on
the road. Giants have won the
playoffs twice on the road in overtime to play New England in the Super Bowl. Niners,
who tied an NFL record with only 10 turnovers during the regular season, had 2
in this game. Niners
and Giants met six times in the playoffs between the 1981 and 1994 seasons with
the winner going on to win the Super Bowl four times. Next
