Game Notes:
"The season always seems to go so fast. Of course it lasts longer when your team is in the playoffs, but that hasn't happened around here for the past four years. In any event, watching the Giants take the field I couldn't help but think that over the course of the season with maybe just a few plays going the other way, the Giants could have made it into the playoffs. I don't know how far they would have gone, especially after watching today, but it's something that every fan wants.
Anyway, in this game the Giants got off to a bad start with the Eagles scoring on their first possession. DeMarco Murray broke free for a 54 yard touchdown and I was surprised that there was no one in our secondary fast enough to catch up to him. On their turn the Giants got some encouraging runs from Rashad Jennings, but had to punt. The Eagles were down by their goal line and went three-and-out. Then, with good field position, Eli Manning got the Giants down to the Eagles five yard line and I was sure the way things were going they'd be able to tie up the score. I was wrong, and an easy 22 yard field goal had them trailing 7-3.
Then Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford hooked up with tight end Zach Ertz for a pass that went 60 yards, and the Giants did catch up with him, but one play later they were in the endzone with a 14-3 lead. The Giants were giving up big plays, but they came up with some of their own, including an interception on Bradford, and they were able to close out the half with a touchdown to cut the lead and make it 21-20 game.
Early in the second half Jasper Brinkley caused DeMarco Murray to fumble and George Selvie recovered the ball. One play later, Manning hit Rueben Randle for a 45 yard touchdown and the Giants had the lead for the first time in the game! I thought things were looking good when the Eagles went three-and-out and the Giants had a first down at their 14 yard line.
Unfortunately Walter Thurmond ended up with an 83 yard fumble return when Manning's throwing arm was hit, and the ball was caught by Thurmond. The Eagles scored another touchdown after that and it looked like every time Bradford threw to Ertz it was a catch. Jordan Matthews was almost as good and the Giants couldn't stop the Eagles from moving the ball.
The Giants had one last shot with less than two minutes left, but this hasn't been their year and they took a 35-30 loss in this one to close out the season with another 6-10 record. Let's just all hope for better next year."

Game Notes:
"The Giants finished the season the same way they started, and it reflected how they played throughout the year. They couldn't win the close ones, and who's really to blame here? The Giants knew for sure they had a receiver who could make plays, but big surprise - they had a running back in their midst as well. Ben McAdoo seems to have gotten a pass on the season because he's brought Eli Manning to overall better numbers, but his failed system of using a pack of running backs limited the full explosiveness of what this offense could have been. It's become more obvious over the past few games that the 'Four Back Attack' is no attack at all, and there's also been some questionable play calling.
One example in this game was when the Giants were down 7-0 on the Eagles five yard line and Shane Vereen was used as the ball carrier. He got two yards, Manning threw two incomplete passes and the Giants settle for a field goal. What happened to Rashad Jennings who on the opening series just prior to that, had five runs that averaged about five yards a carry? Wasn't he worth a shot or two this close to the goal line? And as you saw, Jennings was no fluke. He went on to finish the game with 27 carries for a season-high 170 yards and one touchdown.
Later in the game with the Giants down by one point, on a 3rd-and-10 at the Eagles 41 yard line, they ran Vereen (why?) for three yards and they had to punt. The camera showed Tom Coughlin on the sidelines not looking at all too happy with that call. Of course Coughlin will take it all on his shoulders like he always does, but I hope there will be some realization from those that sit in judgment of his future about all he's had to bear this year.
Maybe next season they'll have Victor Cruz or someone like him to help Manning keep drives going. Maybe Jason Pierre-Paul or someone like him will be playing for a full year. General Manager Jerry Reese has had some hits and misses with the draft and free agency and there was definitely a lack of talent on the defense this year in a few key positions.
McAdoo's offensive plan to use four running backs kept them in pretty good health all year, but it all amounted to an average of just over 100 yards a game. That's about the same as last year, and the passing yardage has improved by just 5 yards a game. The rushing defense actually improved, but it wasn't all good news. No team in NFL history has ever allowed 300 passing yards per game, and this unit narrowly avoided that historic note by giving up 298.9. That makes them the 'almost worst' team by about a yard a game, as the 2011 Green Bay Packers hold the record - 299.7 per game."
