Notes: "It started off so good and
then turned so bad you couldn't believe it. The Panthers surprised the Vikings
last week and continued their scary tactics today at the Meadowlands. All the
fans were caught up in the excitement of the last regular season game at Giants
Stadium as they marched down the field on their opening drive. They took it from
their own 20 yard line to the Panthers 26 with a fresh set of downs after Bradshaw
ran for 3 yards on a third-and-two. Then Eli Manning threw a touchdown pass to
Steve Smith in the endzone. Everyone should have immediately turned their
backs, put their hands over their ears and left taking their fond memories of
Giants Stadium with them and never looking back. Unfortunately that touchdown
was called back because of a holding penalty. Then the offense was overcoming
the penalty yardage and more when Mario Manningham snared a long pass but fumbled
it over to the Panthers. Once again everyone should have left but what did we
know with expectations high for the team and the exciting halftime events and
all The Panthers took over the game at that point. It was 24-0 for the halftime
ceremonies and 41-9 at the end. Playoff hopes were now a mere glimmer of a chance
with less of a chance that the team would be able to offer any kind of a competitive
game if that happened. All said and done, the Giants made sure that the fans wouldn't
miss old Giants stadium as they left."
Game Notes:
"The Giants were fighting for a
shot at the playoffs. The Panthers at a chance at not having a losing season.
The fight didn't last long. The Giants had started with an opening drive that
was reminiscent of the impressive one they started with last week against the
Redskins. It faltered and the Giants were never able to recover. As everyone knew,
this was another 'must win game' for the Giants, and those hopes of winning faded
as the game wore on. Avoiding a complete shutout, on this day of all in the very
likely last Giants game played at this stadium, became more the immediate cause.
After a while the fans had no choice but to realize that this big day would
end not as they had hoped and envisioned. It was a big tailspin from a team that
started 5-0. At the end of the second half with the team trailing 24-0, I'd have
to say, my favorite play was Eli Manning playing his heart out trying to get the
ball to someone - anyone, running past the line of scrimmage and turning to find
no one to flip the ball to. Eli deserves all the credit. His teammates had already
given up on the play. It was a fitting moment that reflected on the quality of
support he got this year and on the eminent closing down of the stadium today
and of this lackluster season." Early
