Game
Notes: "If you were at the stadium
today you got to see a wild game from start to finish. You have to love this Giants
team because the word 'quit' doesn't exist, and even though they lost, they showed
they can play with the best of them. I was disappointed when Odell Beckham Jr.
raced free from Panthers cornerback Josh Norman and dropped a long pass that would
have been a touchdown. That was right at the start on the Giants first drive.
The Panthers scored first, but the Giants tied it up when Eli Manning hit Rueben
Randle with a touchdown pass. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie had a chance to break
the tie, but he misplayed the ball on what would have been a sure interception
returned for a touchdown. At the end of the half the Panthers were up 21-7
and I couldn't help thinking how it could have been tied if those plays were made
earlier. Things got worse when the Panthers added two more touchdowns in the third
quarter. It was 35-7 and anyone who took an early exit missed out on the Giants
exciting comeback. It started when Will Tye caught a touchdown pass. Then Rashad
Jennings ran 38 yards for one of his own to make it 35-21. The defense blocked
a field goal, but four plays later Manning's throw to Hakeem Nicks was intercepted
in the endzone. Manning got another shot a minute later when Cam Newton fumbled.
This time Shane Vereen caught a pass for a touchdown. It looked like the Giants
couldn't be stopped when the defense held the Panthers to a three-and-out and
Manning hit Beckham for a touchdown on fourth down to tie the game at 35-35. There
was less than two minutes left, but the defense couldn't come up with another
stop before the Panthers were in field goal range at the Giants 25 yard line.
They made it and got the win to push their record to 14-0. Like the New England
game, the Giants put up a good fight, but didn't have enough to close it out and
that's been the sad story all season long."
Game
Notes: "The stakes going in were
this, Carolina was looking to win their 18th straight regular season game and
also move closer to obtaining home field advantage all through their playoffs.
The Giants were looking to stay alive in the crazy NFC East three-way tie for
first place. The Panthers eventually came out on top, but the Giants really made
them work to keep their unbeaten season alive. Odell Beckham Jr. stole the
show once again, but in a bad way. Beckham dropped an easy touchdown pass early
on in the first quarter and failing that, he set a different tone for the game.
While it was all somewhat entertaining to the crowd and the media, it certainly
didn't make things easier on his teammates, who were looking to win this football
game. Beckham drew four penalties in his quest to continually battle with Panthers
cornerback Josh Norman, who was also out of line at times. Three of Beckham's
four calls were for unnecessary roughness and that's not how you go about helping
your team sustain drives and put points on the board and that's what the Giants
needed most. They took a pounding and ended up down 35-7 before mounting a
surprising comeback to tie the score when Beckham finally bested Norman with his
touchdown catch. The Giants had to score 28 unanswered points to accomplish a
35-35 tie, but then they did what they have been doing over the course of the
season. This time the let down came with 1:46 left in the game. The Panthers offense
suddenly became effective again against a Giants defense that had held them at
bay for so long. They kicked their field goal and left town happy with their 14-0
record. The Giants have now taken six losses in the final minutes or in overtime. There
were some good things to take away from this. The defensive line got pressure
on the quarterback, sacked him three times and Jason Pierre-Paul got his first
sack of the season. Safety Landon Collins played another strong game. Rashad Jennings
showed that the Giants could sustain a running attack though he marred his performance
with his fumble turnover, and Will Tye is looking solid as a starting tight end.
The bad news is that Beckham could face a suspension for his actions and that
the Giants are just about done as far as any playoff hopes are concerned. Then
again, maybe that's not a bad thing."
