Game Notes:
"The Giants started the game with
the ball, but they didn't have it long. On the second play Eli Manning's
first pass of the game was picked off by Asante Samuel. That gave the
Falcons great field position at the Giants 16 yard line and a few plays
later they scored and were up 7-0. The Giants did much better on their
next possession, getting down to the Atlanta 12, but Lawrence Tynes missed
on a 30 yard field goal try. The Falcons took over and came up with another
score to make it 14-0.
The Giants responded to that with a 3-and-out and then Manning threw another
interception right away on their next possession. The Falcons added another
three points off of that mistake. Overall it looked like Christmas was
coming early to the Falcons
with Eli Manning throwing interceptions instead of touchdowns, and with
all that David Wilson magic from last game suddenly gone, and so the score
was 17-0 at the half.
In the fourth quarter quarterback Matt Ryan was pulled from the game by
the Falcons, but it was not for anything the Giants did. It was for what
they didn't do and Ryan became much too important to leave out there with
a 34-0 score. It never got better and you have to wonder how a team goes
from a 52-27 win in one week to a loss like this in the next?
At a time when the Giants were supposed to be putting it all together
for a playoff run like the remarkable one last year, they play their worst
game of the year (decade)? Let's hope they figure a lot of things out
before next weeks game against the Ravens."
Game
Notes:
"Unlike when the Saints came to
town, no eggs were thrown at the Giants when they landed in Atlanta, but
they sure laid a big one here today. This is the kind of 'nothing works
game' you'd want to get out of the way by the playoffs, but someone should
also remind the Giants that you still have to get there first. The Giants
sure hurt those chances as Washington won their game against Cleveland
and then Dallas against Pittsburgh.
Obviously it's tough to play against Atlanta without some key players
like Ahmad Bradshaw, Prince Amukamara, Kenny Phillips and Tyler Sash.
Then Chris Snee left with an injured hip early in the second quarter,
but as they say, as Eli Manning goes so goes the Giants and it didn't
go well. By the end of the half
Manning had broken Phil Simms record for completions, but he wasn't having
much of a good day, completing just 8 passes out of 17 and with two interceptions
at that point.
Last week you'll remember he also had two interceptions, but he complemented
that with four touchdown passes. This week there were none from him or
anyone else or even a face saving field goal. Manning completed only 5
more passes on the day. The defense was put in a bad position early on,
but they had lots of chances to do better later in the game and just didn't.
They had one sack and caused no turnovers.
Tom Coughlin tried to inspire his team by going for it three times on
fourth down, but they failed each and every time. Once the game was obviously
lost late in the fourth quarter, and I could be wrong, I don't think Coughlin
minded going down with a shutout. He's a crafty coach, always thinking
ahead, and will use this to remind this team how easily the whole season
could slip away to zip if they don't bring it all next week at home against
the Ravens."
