Notes: "It
felt good to see the Giants finally win a game, and even though the Panthers didn't
look anything like the same team we faced last year, the Giants needed to have
a good showing. They came on strong in the beginning and built up a 10-0 lead,
and our defense was really shutting them down on the run, but once the Panthers
stopped dropping passes on their fill-in quarterback Chris Weinke, they were able
to even things up near the half at 10-10. Manning used the last three minutes
to get the Giants back up again 17-10. In the second half the Panthers seemed
to give up on running the ball. The Giants had really shut them down in that area,
and besides, Weinke was able to throw and make completions on the Giants secondary.
Unfortunately for the Panthers though, their backup quarterback wasn't sharp enough
to do it without making interceptions as well, and that's what did them in. If
Jake Delhomme was in there things might have turned out differently. This time
It was the Panthers who had more injuries than the Giants and that was a factor.
"
Game Notes:
"I
would have liked to see Eli Manning being more accurate with his throws, but he
got the job done. I don't know why Plaxico Burress had to petition to get a pass
thrown his way. That should have been automatic today since both of Carolina's
starting cornerbacks weren't playing, and one of their replacements had left the
game real early. What more of an invitation could you want to throw deep on the
Panthers? The Giants tried to run Brandon Jacobs up the middle to the point
of stupidity. After being criticized last week for letting Jacobs run wide on
a fourth down play and failing, they seemed intent in showing that running the
big guy up the middle doesn't always work. Tiki Barber on the other hand was very
effective, choosing his spots and he had one of his usual great gamedays running
for 112 yards on 20 carries. The Giants secondary was tested today, and luckily
it was by a quarterback who hasn't played much and in a very long time. The Giants
came up looking good with three interceptions on Chris Weinke, but they also let
him throw for a Carolina team record 423 yards against them. The Giants were able
to contain Steve Smith at the expense of letting Drew Carter come away with 8
receptions for 144 yards and 1 touchdown. Once again, be thankful for those interceptions.
With the Eagles (7-6) winning today and Dallas (8-5) losing, things have tightened
up in the standings. So get ready for yet another big game next week when the
Eagles come to town." Early
