Game
Notes: "It
was a really nice day to be at the stadium. I like one o'clock games when the
weather is calm. I was hoping to see the Giants get back on track and still catch
some of the Eagles - Bears game later. When the Giants took the field, Brandon
Jacobs was in with the starting unit for the first time this season and I was
hoping that would give the team a spark. They got the ball first and things were
going well with Eli Manning handing off to Jacobs and passing to Derek Hagan and
Mario Manningham. Ahmad Bradshaw didn't
start, but he was still included in this drive. He came in and took catch 10 yards
for a first down to the Jaguars 11 yard line. After an incomplete pass that
was almost a disaster because it looked like Hagan caught and fumbled a ball until
Tom Coughlin challenged the call, Brandon Jacobs bruised his way eight yards down
to the Jaguars 3 yard line. It was third-and-two and I was surprised by the playcall.
Jacobs had just slammed through the Jaguars defense for eight yards, but for some
reason they switched him out for Bradshaw. They didn't have Bradshaw try anything
fancy, and his attempt to blast up the middle the way Jacobs just did, resulted
in a loss of two yards. They settled for a field goal which seemed OK at the start,
but the next points were a long time coming. Also the Giants defense didn't perform
as well as I had expected. They couldn't get the Jaguars offense off the field
as quarterback David Garrard handed off to Maurice Jones-Drew or passed to his
receivers. Making first downs was no problem and before the half ended they had
scored two touchdowns and one fieldgoal. The Giants had only been able to
add one more fieldgoal and were trailing 17-6. They came out like a different
team in the second half and intercepted David Garrard on his first pass attempt.
The Giants only got three points off that, but they were playing better on both
sides of the ball. They waited until the fourth quarter to tie it up when Manning
hit Manningham for a touchdown and
Bradshaw ran the ball in for two points. The Jaguars came back with a fieldgoal
for the lead on their next drive, but they had to pick up yardage with some quarterback
scrambles when receivers weren't open. The Giants defense had their number now
and they held after Manning hit Kevin Boss for a 32 yard touchdown that ended
up being the final scoring of the game, a 24-20 win."
Game Notes:
"Turnovers have been the ruin of the Giants
this year. In half of the ten games they played this year, the opening drive ended
in a turnover. It almost happened again today when Derek Hagan fumbled a catch
away at the Jaguars 2 yard line. That was the officials call, until Tom Coughlin
saw it differently or at least hoped it to be different. He went to his challenge
flag claiming that Hagan never really caught the ball before it was stripped away.
It was a close decision but Coughlin won and the Giants were able to come away
with points on their opening drive for only the first time this season. The other
ten opening drives had resulted in five punts and five turnovers. So they
started fast, but fizzled real soon when the defense took the field. They let
Maurice Jones-Drew and Rashad Jennings run all over them and the Jaguars took
the lead 7-3. Not much changed in the whole first half with quarterback David
Garrard hitting on his passes and even running the ball in once for a touchdown.
The Giants had to come from behind to
win this game, and were able to do so thanks in part to the offense not committing
any turnovers at all, and with the defense getting back on track in the second
half. Earlier in the week, the defense said that they realized they would
have to carry the offense because of all the injuries but it took them quite awhile
to actually make that happen. Terrell Thomas did his best with 1 sack and 1 interception.
Once the offense had more opportunities on the field they took advantage of it.
Eli Manning targeted Kevin Boss, Mario Manningham, and Ahmad Bradshaw a number
of times. Brandon Jacobs started this game and rushed for 87 yards on his 14 carries
and Ahmad Bradshaw rushed for 49 yards on his 9 carries. That's much better then
the 2.3 yards they averaged in the last game. A loss today would have been tough
to handle with Washington coming in next week and then having to play three road
games out of the final four." Scoring:
