Game
Notes: "Given
the state of health on the Giants, I was more hoping for the best tonight instead
of expecting to see any kind of stellar performance. Even with that thought I
was still disappointed because the Giants actually could have come away with a
win if they hadn't done themselves in with turnovers. They were behind most of
this game but near the end of the third quarter when Eli moved the ball about
70 yards and hit Travis Beckum with a touchdown pass and 16-10 score I grew more
hopeful. On the Eagles next series, Justin
Tuck sacked Michael Vick and caused a fumble down in Eagle territory, Eli Manning
quickly turned that into a touchdown in just two plays, a surprising pass to Brandon
Jacobs that went for 22 yards, followed by Derek Hagan's 5-yard touchdown catch.
Now with the Giants having a 17-16 lead and about 11 minutes left to go I thought
they could escape Philly with a win Suddenly however, Lawrence Tynes turned
into Matt Dodge as his ensuing kickoff went out of bounds giving the Eagles field
position at their own 40 yard line, but the Giants defense held them. It would
have been nice if the offense was able to build on their one point lead, but they
went nowhere. Next series the Eagles not only made a 4th & 1 at the 50 yard line,
LeSean McCoy ran it all the way in for a touchdown. Add the two pointer they went
for and made and the Eagles were up
by seven with about four and a half minutes left to play. The next highlight
happened when Eli Manning was intercepted by Asante Samuel who then fumbled the
ball back to the Giants. Thank you Rich Seubert for the recovery. That soon led
to Eli Manning scrambling on a 4th & 6 for about 16 yards, and fumbling the ball
back when he chose not to slide while giving himself up. The Eagles chewed up
the clock until David Akers hit on a 30 yard field goal and basically a 27-17
game over score. The remaining twenty seconds left allowed Eli Manning just enough
time to throw a meaningless interception.
Game Notes:
"Unless you're Michael Vick, it's never
a good sign when your quarterback is vying for the team lead in rushing. Eli Manning
had 22 yards on his two carries and maybe it's too bad he didn't scramble more
as Ahmad Bradshaw was worse than neutralized. He gained only 29 yards on his 12
carries. Considering that one of them went for 17 yards, it means the others averaged
not much more than 1 yard an attempt. The 'worse' part I mentioned was either
Bradshaw's fumble or his two catches that resulted in minus five yards. You take
your pick. Brandon Jacobs wasn't much better, averaging 2 yards a carry on his
5 tries but at least he didn't fumble the ball, something Manning and Bradshaw
both did. With Manning looking for any available healthy target, he hit Hakeem
Nicks, Mario Manningham, Derek Hagan, Kevin Boss, Duke
Calhoun, Bear Pascoe, Travis Beckum, Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs. Jacobs
came away with the longest catch of the day when he took his one catch from Manning
for 22 yards. Eighteen of Manning's 33 passes were evenly split, going to either
Hagan or Nicks. They caught half of them and the Eagles muscled their way in for
three. They turned the ball over a total of five times. With a banged up line
I was hoping that Bradshaw could possibly still be a weapon with his ability to
turn nothing into something for a few big plays. That didn't happen and Jacobs
wasn't the answer either. Manning wasn't able to throw deep to his receivers and
the Eagles played competently against the Giants watered down offense. The
defense got away with a few mistakes when DeSean Jackson and Jason Avant dropped
easy catches, and they got burned bigtime on the 50-yard run by LeSean McCoy on
a fourth-and-1. They otherwise didn't allow Michael Vick to have a monster game
like he did the week before in Washington. Justin Tuck with his sacks and forced
fumbles really stood out. This was an 'expensive' game to lose because the Giants
dropped to second place to a division rival. Getting to the playoffs if at all
possible with home field advantage became much more difficult and thoughts of
another second-half collapse are starting to creep in."
