Game Notes:
"This was one of those
games where 'you had to be there' to feel the excitement of this opening
game. Unfortunately the results did not live up to the expectations everyone
felt at the start. Both teams seemed a bit rusty, but I would say that
the way things were unfolding the Giants seemed to be the better team
on the field in the first half. The Cowboys seemed disorganized and were
hit with a slew of false starts, but aside from that, Tony Romo was still
able to do what he does best. Even without Jason Witten being a big factor,
Romo had missed on only 4 of his 15 passes and even with one sack and
one interception, Romo's touchdown pass to Kevin Ogletree had his team
up 7-3 at the half.
That was hardly an insurmountable score and I felt sure the Giants would
come roaring back in the second half. The Giants did score two touchdowns,
but were lackluster in their play. The strange thing about this game was
that it seemed like the Cowboys owned the clock and time of possession
by plying up more and more penalties and then overcoming their penalty
yardage by making first downs. They came up with two touchdowns as well
in the second half and one fieldgoal.
That was enough to win it and I guess somewhere
former Giant receiver Amani Toomer was saying 'I told you so' with his
thoughts that Tony Romo is a better quarterback than Eli Manning. Going
by his 'statistics that simply can't be ignored' he's probably got an
argument tonight. Damn. I wish Victor Cruz didn't drop those three passes,
but that's the way it goes sometimes. One
big trouble with this early season game is that you have to wait so long
to watch the Giants play again to redeem themselves. That won't be until
September 16 when Tampa Bay comes to town. It's a long season and let's
look forward to what the Giants can do moving forward."
Game Notes:
"There
were numerous false start penalties and for most of the night Tony Romo
and his front line had a 'failure to communicate'. It didn't matter, because
Romo was a 'chatterbox' when it came to connecting to his receivers, especially
Kevin Ogletree. Romo was on his game even if his front line wasn't.
The Giants were coming off a Super Bowl win, but they still had a lot
to prove tonight. It's just one game but the same questions remain. They
finished last in the league in rushing and tonight rookie David Wilson
and a healthy Ahmad Bradshaw did net one touchdown, but came up with only
82 total yards and one fumble.
The secondary certainly didn't look improved, with Tony Romo scoring 3
touchdowns against 1 interception for a quarterback rating of 129.5. Their
rushing game finished with 143 yards, so once again the Giants can't be
considered run-stoppers. They did not seem to build any kind of 'bridge'
from last season that Tom Coughlin might be looking for with tonight's
play.
Anyway the Giants have a nice
long time to review what's not working as Gamegirl mentioned, and if you
have the opportunity, try to preview the Buccaneers - Panthers game this
Sunday at 4:25pm. The Giants face both those teams next, Tampa Bay first
and then Carolina just four days later. More Sunday distractions would
be the other two division teams playing at 1pm. If you can't dial-in the
Eagles or Redskins, the double quarterbacked Jets play at that same time,
and Peyton Manning makes his first start for Denver, playing Pittsburgh
later that night. Peyton has some big shoes to fill. If you remember,
last year Tim Tebow ended the Steelers' season with an overtime victory
in the first round of the AFC playoffs."

Giants Eli Manning was sacked 3 times,
and hit a total of five times.
Giants Michael Coe made his first career
start at cornerback.
Coe left the game in the second half with a hamstring injury.
Giants now haven't won a game on a Wednesday
in well over 7 decades, actually since the last time they played, in 1934,
a 14-12 win over the Steelers. To be fair, before tonight, the last NFL
game played on a Wednesday was on Sept. 22, 1948.
Cowboys Tony Romo had his fifth game in
row against the Giants with a 100+ passer rating, improving on his 119.4
rating in the past four games.
Cowboys Kevin Ogletree had 114 yards on 8
catches. Ogletree had 25 receptions for 294 yards and no scores entering
this game.
