Game
Notes: "Of
course the significance of this day overshadows any football game, and there was
a respectful presentation to remind us all of that.
Innocent lives were lost in both cities and it was fitting that the NFL decided
to have the Giants and Redskins open their season in Washington. The Jets will
play their game later against the Cowboys at MetLife Stadium. The Eagles opened
their season earlier today in St. Louis and came away with a 31-13 win. It's nicer
to be at the stadium for the first game, but the network schedule worked out well
for many fans with the Giants having an away game today. Depending on your location,
you could be able to catch all the NFC East division games from home. Based
on previous performances, Washington fans were hoping that Eli Manning would throw
an interception or two and they got a big one when Washington's first-round pick,
Ryan Kerrigan, tipped one of Manning's passes in the air, caught it and took it
in 9 yards for a touchdown. That put the Redskins up 21-14. Small solace that
it did not bounce off the hands of one of our receivers I
was hoping Pierre-Paul would have a good game especially with Osi Umenyiora sidelined
and Justin Tuck out for this game, but even his two sacks weren't enough. There
was upfront pressure on Grossman, but he was able to sting our soft secondary.
It seemed that Redskins receivers were able to pop up at will and present themselves
as available targets for Grossman. So
this important divisional win goes to the Redskins and we don't have to wait too
long to see what the Jets can do with Cowboys. Hopefully we won't be the only
division team with a loss."
Game Notes:
"There were a lot of questions for the
Giants going into this game on both offense and defense and now we have some answers.
The offensive line for the Giants looked like they were in preseason mode. For
a long while they have been overpowering the Redskins defense. You can't say that
the current players won't grow into their roles, but not having a Kevin Boss or
Steve Smith on the field takes this group down a notch. It shows up where making
third-downs and fourth-and-short plays become a rarity. They converted just one
of 10 third-down attempts. The defense was able to hold the Redskins to 72
rushing yards on 25 carries, less than 3 yards an attempt, and they got pressure
on Rex Grossman even without both starting defensive ends, but the secondary did
them in. Aaron Ross had a good preseason but he did not shine today, letting Jabar
Gaffney beat him at the end of the half with a 36-yard catch to set up the Redskins
14-14 tying touchdown that he also didn't cover. The
Redskins had a few questions of their own, like can Rex Grossman deliver as the
starting quarterback? During preseason Grossman moved the offense well and spread
the ball around He had a big opportunity to shine today with the Giants playing
with a defense that could have used a few more regulars on the field. Grossman's
performance might have John Beck sitting things out for awhile as far as their
quarterback competition goes. He completed 21-of-34 passes for 305 yards and two
touchdowns. The Redskins defense
has had their problems in the past with the Giants running game. They brought
in former Giant Barry Cofield to help fix that and he had said that he gave away
a few secrets to his new teammates. His influence probably helped them out as
the Giants came away with only 75 rushing yards, including that 14 yard breakout
by Brandon Jacobs. Also this Redskins 31st ranked defense managed to sack Eli
Manning 4 times. Hopefully Justin
Tuck will be able to play next week when former defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo
brings his Rams team to town. The Giants need all the defensive help they can
get."
